Osama bin Laden was a prisoner in Abbottabad, Pakistani intelligence officer leaked his information, report says

ISLAMABAD: A former Pakistani intelligence officer disclosed the hideout of Osama bin Laden to CIA in exchange for $25 million bounty on the head of the al-Qaida chief, who was living as prisoner under ISI protection in the garrison town of Abbottabad, according to a report.

"In August 2010 a former senior Pakistani intelligence officer approached Jonathan Bank, then the CIA's station chief at the US embassy in Islamabad. He offered to tell the CIA where to find bin Laden in return for the reward that Washington had offered in 2001," Dawn reported, citing American investigative journalist and author Seymour M Hersh.

The intelligence official, Hersh said, was a military man who is now living in Washington and working for the CIA as a consultant. "I cannot tell you more about him," he said.

The US confirmed the information provided by the official and put the compound under satellite surveillance. Americans later informed the ISI which set up a cell in Ghazi, Tarbela, where "one man from the SEALs and two communicators" practised the raid before executing the operation, Hersh said, adding that it was difficult decision but Pakistan was ultimately taken on board and told about the script to kill Osama.

Hersh said that whatever the Obama administration told about the operation to kill Osama was part of fiction and the real story was totally different.

"The most blatant lie was that Pakistan's two most senior military leaders — Gen Ashfaq Parvez Kayani (the-then army chief) and Gen Ahmed Shuja Pasha (the-then ISI chief) — were never informed of the US mission," he told Dawn.

When the Americans contacted the Pakistani government and asked for Osama, the ISI insisted that he be killed and his death should be announced a week after the operation.

Hersh said the Saudi government also knew about Osama's presence it Abbottabad and had advised the Pakistanis to keep him as a prisoner. "Osama was an ISI prisoner and never moved except under their supervision," he said.

The Americans were required to say that the al-Qaida chief was found in a mountainous region in the Hindu Kush so that neither Pakistan nor Afghanistan could be blamed for keeping him, Hersh said, adding that the ISI wanted him dead because "they did not want a witness".

Hersh said President Barack Obama did not consult Gen Kayani and Gen Pasha before releasing the cover story that he shared with his nation in a live broadcast.

"The cover story trashed Pakistan. It was very embarrassing for them," said Hersh. "Pakistan has a good army, not a bad army, but the cover story made it look bad."

Hersh also said that Dr Shakil Afridi, the physician now jailed in Peshawar for helping CIA trace down Osama's hideout, was a CIA asset but he did not know about the operation. Afridi was used as a cover to hide the real story, he said.

Osama was killed in Abbottabad on the night of May 2, 2011, in a covert raid conducted by US navy Seal.

US's Number One Enemy till 2011 and their ally of WOT, the Pakistan

i generally remember this news, "when the US's Marine first captured Osama from Abbottabad of Pakistan's Military area, and then they killed him, and then they threw his body to Ocean ." no further question. hence, anyhow now we are now left with reading these only. ....
(looks like cleaning the mess.)

but anyhow US's soldiers could finally kill this so called Number One Enemy of US till then, the plotter of 9/11 2001, and thats count......

and in fact, considering Pakistan a long term ally of US's WOT (war on terror), Pakistan does have enough reasons to say that they were keeping OBL, even in that luxury house with his 7-8 wives..... whether we consider him prisoner, or whatever, but he was intentionally kept there in Pakistan's military town, which looks more realistic...

I don't believe either the official version or Hersh's version since they are always full of hyperbole, grandstanding and dripping with high morality which in any case is false.

Its always difficult to know who and what to trust in such situations. Seymour Hersh has a good track record, but that does not mean that this story is accurate or that he is not a medium for disinformation, willfully or otherwise.

Like any good disinfo, it will have pieces of truth. Moreover, its not like intelligence agencies, particularly as the ones which are as wide-spread as the US are a monolith, there would be factions with their own agenda.

That the Pakis knew about OBL or rather maintained him is obviously true. That some ISI agent wanted bounty is also not a stretch.

Whether the Seal team was in any danger or not remains an open question. I doubt OBL was allowed to have any serious weapons.

Overall the timing of the hit just before US elections was 'fortunate'. We'll never really know the entire truth about these things.

sir, further to my above post, we have a news as below too

Leon Panetta denies Seymour Hersh on bin Laden raid - CNNPolitics.com

and this news is more 'satisfactory' i find.

it was a simple case that 9/11 convict was killed, as per the death penalty granted for him after his conviction

and as he was hiding on a safe place outside US, the military operation was done to make the justice. a simple story

and if we try to talk anything more than that, then it will only result in abuses. to the victims also, and for the nation, US too, which won't give a right message to rest of world....

Perhaps it would be true because it is not like the Pakis have openly done a deal with Americans on such people:

"Khalid Sheikh Mohammed was captured in Rawalpindi, Pakistan, (about 20 km southwest of Islamabad), on March 1, 2003, by the Pakistani ISI, possibly in a joint action with the CIA's Special Activities Division paramilitary operatives[51] and officers of the American Diplomatic Security Service. He has been in U.S. custody since that time.

Initially Khalid Sheikh Mohammed was held in the CIA's Salt Pit (Cobalt) prison in Afghanistan. After just a “few minutes” of questioning at Cobalt, he was subject to "enhanced interrogation techniques". He was slapped, grabbed in the face, placed in stress positions, placed in standing sleep deprivation, doused with water, subject to rectal rehydration multiple times, without a determination of medical need"

Source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Khalid_Sheikh_Mohammed

The other thought process is that perhaps it was a lady luck. If it is confirmed that Pakistan knew and approved what USA did and made a deal:

1. Helicopter looses its bearings and falls. (even if it was with approval)

2. A military force / foreign country / aggressors come into Pakistan sovereign territory without informing. (even if it was with approval)

*** Added later 3. Electricity is shut off in the whole town.

1 and 2 are the main areas.

i think it is possible for Pakistan to whore it self to get a deal but why risk having 1. and 2. above. The 1 and 2 above areas make me really wonder why. Is it lady luck for the rest of the world (to make Pakistan look worse) ...

Are Pakis saying Americans are incompetent by having 1 since it was plan to have a simple in and out.

because to the world it was displayed that Pakistan was not informed, Pakistan did not know, Pakistan had this person in a location which is military safe area and Pakistan was either incompetent if not involved.

Did the Americans squeeze this deal out of the Pakis after confronting them with the truth. But the Pakis have given up similar people like above.

Why deal with the Americans if they make Pakistan look like whores and dirt. Is it worth it and what are they having in return. It would be better to stand up straight and do business on the table and not in the dirty alleys which I am sure the Americans do not like but have to with the Pakis.

Whatever that case the Americans and Pakis dealings are more like a bad movie script that has big budget and special effects and fails in the market place. You still get people that watch it and believe in that relationship but its not mainstream and there are much better relationships both that do better in the market place and with low budgets and do exceptionally well.

You still get the bad movies on purpose because making loss is a good thing because one pays no tax. perhaps in the bigger picture of things Americans needs this bad relationship with Pakistan ... but like in mainstream the better relationships will need to be there for survival in the long term.

Either the case it may be, the Pakistanis (especially the establishment puppies ''pilley'') inventing new lies to keep the PA off the hook is worth reading.

Whatever twist Pakistanis may give to this now or in future, they got discredited and disgraced at every step of this whole Osama debacle.

I've beem listening to radio talk shows and today, I listened to an interview of Seymour Hersh. This is a big talking point now in the US, after the Philadelphia Amtrak accident. As a matter of fact, this news is lost in the din about the OBL operation and Seymour Hersh's claims.

German Spy Agency Told US of Bin Laden's Presence in Pakistan: German Media
Germany's foreign intelligence agency helped United States' Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) track down Osama bin Laden in Pakistan, where United States special forces killed the Al Qaeda leader, reported a German newspaper on Sunday.

The German spy-service BND provided a tip-off that bin Laden was hiding in Pakistan, with the knowledge of Pakistani security services, according to the Bild am Sonntag report, which was published as the agency is battling heavy criticism in a spy scandal.

The information came from a BND informant within Pakistan's Inter-Services Intelligence agency and confirmed CIA suspicions, said the newspaper report which cited unnamed US intelligence sources.

The American source was quoted as saying the German tip-off was of “fundamental importance” in the hunt for the architect of the September 11, 2001 attacks.

Pakistan has denied that it knew bin Laden was living within its borders or that it had advance knowledge of the 2011 US special forces operation that killed him in a walled compound in the city of Abbottabad.
