Washington: While significant effort is being made by governments of both India and Pakistan to better ties, a majority of people in both countries continue to have an unfavourable view of the other, an opinion poll conducted by a US-based research centre has found.

The survey by the Pew Research Center found that both Indians and Pakistanis have an unfavourable view of the other, but Pakistani sentiment is "more intense".

While 72 per cent of Pakistanis see India unfavourably, 59 per cent of Indians have an unfavourable view of their neighbour.

In fact about six-in-ten Indians (59 per cent) see Pakistan as a very serious threat to India and the country is viewed as a far greater menace than Lashkar-e-Taiba, Pew Research Center said in its latest survey report. "Only 13 per cent of all Indians have a favourable view of Pakistan; 59 per cent have an unfavourable opinion of their Muslim neighbour. This is the lowest percentage approval of Pakistan among the nine countries where this question was asked," it said.

It said that Indians and Pakistanis see their often fractious relationship in a similarly negative light but both want their bilateral relations to improve.

"Each has an unfavourable view of the other, but Pakistani sentiment is more intense: 72 per cent of Pakistanis see India unfavourably, with more than half (55 per cent) viewing their neighbour very unfavourably.

"And 57 per cent of Pakistanis see India as a very serious threat," the report said.

However, majorities in both countries want to see their governments pursue efforts to better cross-border ties, the report said. "Seven-in-ten Indians and roughly six-in-ten Pakistanis (62 per cent) think it is important to improve relations. Nearly two-thirds of both Indians and Pakistanis say that increased trade between the two countries would be a good thing," the report said.

"But, while supportive, Indians are less-intensely focused than Pakistanis on resolving the Kashmir dispute. About six-in-ten Indians (59 per cent) say it is very important to resolve Indo-Pakistani differences over that region, compared with roughly eight-in-ten Pakistanis (79 per cent) who hold such strong sentiments," Pew reported.

What surprises me is the "favourable view" held by 13% - how can such a thing be possible? :tsk:

My guess - the business lobby trying to make some money out of Pakistan. And secessionists.

Those 13% who are favourable must be illegal Bangladeshi or Pakistani in India:lol::lol::lol:
13%??? Sounds similar to something. :hmm:

They might be those "sympathizers" who see Pakistan as their idol for Islamic Rule over India one day.

It is quite easy to enumerate the kind of people consisting of that 13%
> English Media head honchos
> "Secular" politicians
> Fans of Mahesh Bhatt and similar people. Also misguided patrons of Classical Musicians and other idiots from Pakistan.
> A sizeable population of the misguided among Muslims
> Illegal immigrants from Bangladesh
> Terrorists from Pakistan
> Businessmen who trade with Pakistan (a vainglorious activity IMHO, trading with the enemy)
.. list probably not exhaustive

Who cares to know about what pakis care.....what is important for us indians is the the GOI should care. The survey should be an eye opener for this hopeless government.

only 13% care and even then the hopeless and impotent govt of india is trying to break a deal with pakistan.

Who cares of that when indian's themself are not in fair ? In the last 6 decades india first time has overwhelming superiority over pakistan in every field .We should carry a bigger stick while dealing with paksitan.

Advise to Indian Government

I don't really subscribe to Indian media. I still don't like Pakistanis. :)

13% is still too high though.

Don't know about the common man, but then again who cares about a Paki anyway but I am certain your cricketers care, don't you.

Add to that the many Paki artists who are absolutely desperate to work in the Indian film industry that they resort to crying on National TV for peace among the two countries just to get a role in an Indian film.

Anyway, a question to my Indian bros and sisters here, does anyone know of any Paki actors or actresses? (people who have worked in the Indian film industry don't count) I think I already know what the answer to that is.

Why is it Farhan, that your cricketers are so desperate to play in an Indian domestic tournament? Don't you have something similar in your country? Oh I forgot, no one wants to go to Pakistan, hell not even your best friends, the Bandladeshis.

I agree. I think most of the remaining 87% are indifferent and not hardcore Pakistan haters. Back in 70s to 90s period yes the haters could be more.
Now that sentiment is increasingle beng repaced with indifference / pity.
More importantly, what has also increased lately is the overall concern about China.

Virendra
