After taking the charge of Indian Prime Minister in 2014, in his first independent day speech, modi made s call for make in India. As if many companies waiting for this movement, they responded overwhelmingly with an enthusiasm. India always under played its manufacturing capabilities because of many reasons and getting kickback by politician being the primary reason. Baba kalyani in his one of the interview stated that whatever India imported in last five years, 85% of the stuff was possible to be made in India. He further stated that India’s strength is not a manufacturing the low tech items like china makes but India’s strength lies in making hi- tech goods at an unbeatable low price. He gave an example of Bharat 52 gun and said that it is cheaper by 30% compared to anything available globally. ISRO and DRDO has setup many such example of India’s frugal engineering. So all these multinationals were awaiting for the prime minister’s call of make in India. The response in defense sector was overwhelming. The priminister’s call needed a policy backing which came in the form of 49% FDI permission and 100% in some special and critical technology for make in India projects.
India was negotiating with Russia for some 200 numbers of Kamov 226 choppers. Immediately Russia offer to make the same under make in India with the partnership of some Indian company and terms of contract is being finalized. Russia. Three days back there was a news that Russia is also willing to make Mi17 in India. Russia and India is currently developing PAKFA and FAGA fifth generation planes which shall be made in India. Recently china said that it will be better than Chinese 5th generation fighter J20. In next 5 to 7 years FAGFA’s production may begin in HAL factory. It is noteworthy here that India is already making Su 30 and T 90 here in India with significant India inputs. India is also buying S400 air defense system which shall be made in collaboration with reliance defense in india . Russian submarine is also proposed to be made in collaboration with reliance. Russia has also offered Mig 35 under make in India. India and Russia are already making world’s best anti ship cruise missile Brahmos.
In response to the PM’s call of make in India , US offered to shift her production line of F 16 and F18to india and offered India top of the line F16 block 70 by Lockheed martin. Boing not only offered top of the line new super hornet but also offered to set up a brand new manufacturing facility in India. They also offered to help to make India’s own AMCA in this factory. India is also buying M 77 light weight Howitzer which shall be made in India in collaboration with Mahindra. India is planning a new aircraft career named Vishal. India has just finalized its specification that it will be a nuclear powered carrier. US and Russia both have offered technology and assistance to make this aircraft carrier including nuclear reactor engine and catapult.
India has just made a deal with France to buy 4++ generation Rafale aircraft. It contains 50% buy bak clause. Dassault company has entered into a JV with reliance company to assemble planes in india. If More order is received, they may produce planes in india. The deal will result in making Kaveri engine operational with suitable technological assistance to india by France. France has also offered a collaboration to India to make world’s top class short range interceptor missile for the defense of ships. If materialized, it will be the world’s best Short range SAM and will perform ship protection role.
Britain has alo offered to assist india in making plane and a partnership in its top of line EUROFIGHTER Tyfoon plane.India is already makes HAWK jet trainer in india and an armed verion is under development.
India and Israel are jointly working on many projects. One of Flagship project in joint venture was MRSAM (Medium range surface to air missile). It is said to be the best interceptor missile of its range and virtually can intercept anything. There are news of Israel collaborating with India in small arm manufacturing in India and also in LASER and many such high end technologies.
Sweden company SAAB has also offered its top of the line fighter SAAB Gripen with complete technology transfer and full manufacturing in India with Indian partners. Sweden has also offered its assistance in making Indian Tejas plane and its variant Tejas MK1+ and Mk2. Sweden has offered many other products to be made in India.
There are also many offers from other countries for defense production in India uncer PM;s make in india initiative ranging from pistol to fighter planes. India is all set to emerge as the top defense hub manufacturing all sort of defense stuff starting from low tech products for mass production to high tech systems such as fighter plane and Ballistic missile defense system.
India shall be such an unique country where sophisticated defense stuff like fighter planes of different origin countries such as India, Russia, Britain, France , Sweden ,shall be in making in a decade from now along with other high tech items such as Submarines and Air defense systems. India is all set to become a manufacturing Hub high tech items of the world and a super Hub of defense manufacturing.
