Assam rifles get 1st delivery of sniper rifles
Kolkata: In what came as a major boost to the Centre’s “Make in India” initiative in the defence sector, the Rifle Factory Ishapore (RFI), the oldest fire-arms manufacturer in the country located in North 24 Parganas of West Bengal, has delivered 100 pieces of 7.62x51-mm sniper rifles to the Assam Rifles (AR), known for its counter insurgency supremacy in the Northeast. The indegenously built sniper rifle’s inclusion is going to add teeth to the armoury of the AR which is under the operational control of the Indian Army’s Eastern Command. The weapon, weighing 6.7 kgs, can be mounted with any telescopic sight. It can hit the target upto 800 metres with an accuracy of 1 MOA which is at par with any international sniper. On Friday, RFI general manager D.K. Mahapatra handed over 100 numbers of 7.62x51-mm sniper rifles to Brigadier H.S. Sandhu, the AR 22 Sector Commander. Each sniper rifle cost around Rs 1.20 lakhs, according to sources. This is also the second and largest consignment so far for the 232-year-old RFI, the only manufacturer of sniper rifles in India, which launched the product in August, 2017.

Bolt Action has not changed much in last 100 years. The normal requirement of Sniper Rifle is 1.5 MOA & this rifle is giving less than 1 MOA which is good.

What we need is a Good Fire Control System to couple with the Rifle, which is the emerging trend world wide, for its more effective use.

Given OFB quality issues, they will mess up even if asked to license produce SIG 716's.

1. Float tender for various parts.
2. Pick L1

3. Assemble

4. Sell it to forces at a premium, greater than market price

5. Take home a bonus and give Govt. another bonus check at ceremony

6. One happy family except the forces

A slightly remodded 1A1 with provision to mount a decent scope will anyday perform better than this replica of a SiG 3k.

How is this iteration??View attachment 49504
The bolt handle is quite intriguing, it seems they made lot of material saving & weight reduction by adopting this one over the conventional handles.

Not sure about which handle is better w.r.t grip ??

The idea of bolt action rifle in .308 cal has not find favor in military across the world given the good accuracy achieved by contemporary semi-automatic DMRs. Most of the commercially available bolt action rifles in this caliber i.e. .308 are sold as Hunting Rifles.
Why didn't OFB try the same scheme for .338 LM cal ?

The bolt should not be a much concern thou. Usually shooters don't hold on to it while engaging or disengaging. They usually do it with an open palm. But nevertheless, it could be modified later on.

Coming to LM round, OFB only works on what is asked.
