I might as well point out that it seems to be reverse engineered OSV-96 of Russia.

OFB can copy paste whatever foreign design it wants, as long it works. They don't plan it to sell in Russia or foreign countries where IPR infringement can be a issue. Their own R&D is at a very nascent phase, and has come up with only designs which can be classified as rudimentary and antique, when compared to global standards. As far as OFB is concerned, the army will probably reject it and this rifle may end up in the hands of CAPFs.

It's just OSV-96 of Russia,they just seems to have got license and ToT for that.

Also an interesting fact about it is OSV-96 is one of the few TRUE Direct Impingement rifle in the world,hot gases are diverted via that thin gas tube and it pushes the bolt carrier directly instead of any piston and so.
Notable example being Swedish AG-42 and French MAS-49.

(I used the word "TRUE" as some here would take offense at getting it compared to AR-15 which in fact is not a TRUE DI gas system rifle,rather a unique "semi-di" system and yada yada)

Do not kid yourself with excessive marketing of western arms merchants. Those longer than 2000 yards kill were made under special circumstances. Only under ten shots have been made by these rifles. These are not normally possible even by the same shooter If conditions are not right. These are downhill, no wind, fully powered optics, quality of ammunition and many more. Optics play a major role. Quality machining of parts during manufacture is another aspect.

What impresses the Indian Army purchasers is the bells and whistles on the rifle and not the rifle itself. Russians loose on it. So does OFB manufactured Widhwansak anti material rifle. It is an effective rifle as well as, doubles as a sniper as well as anti sniper rifle. Somehow OFB does not have the right machine tool for machining or responsibility, accountability to produce better product also does not exist. Hence the user, the Army rejects it out right. Of course flimsy reasons like weight are given as excuses. A 20mm rifle will have higher weight compared to 7.62 rifle. The 20 mm rifle shot will blow the hell out of Army trucks including light armoured carrier. It will send a concealed sniper man running for cover elsewhere.

The imported stuff has excellent furniture, many bells and whistles hence impresses everybody but not a better accuracy and the range. Most of 7.62 sniper rifles are used for shots of 1000 to 1200 yards. More than 2000 yards range shots are one in thousands. Here many other considerations matter.

Hence the OFB or the private company made sniper rifles, if they spend more time to bring in the changes then Indian made rifle will be as good. I dare say that on top of all the OFB weaknesses, the art of finishing the product to attract customer is also important. OFB made products are ugly to look at, although may be effective.

Indian Army spent 10 years hunting for a proper sniper rifle. It is still not here in quantities needed. If we had spent that much time at home and replaced the antique machine tools then the Army needs could have been fulfilled internally by now. That is where private sector would do a better job. Hence OFB need to be privatized.
