India Opens Its 100th Airport Just 40 Miles Away From Doklam

Apart from improving the connectivity of the landlocked state of Sikkim on the eastern frontier, the airport also holds immense strategic significance as it lies just 40 miles away from Doklam, a tiny plateau sandwiched between India, China and Bhutan, which witnessed a military standoff between India and China last year.

Perched on a crag in the Himalayan mountain range, India’s 100th airport was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday. Considered an engineering marvel, erected at the height of 4,500ft above sea level and rugged terrain, the spectacular natural backdrop gives the Pakyong airport a picture-perfect finish.

“The Indian Air Force (IAF) will also find this airport convenient for the landing and taking off of its aircraft,” Junior Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh in India’s Prime Minister Office said.

An official of the Airports Authority of India (AAI) said that state-of-the-art geotechnical engineering, including soil reinforcement and slope stabilization techniques, was used in the construction of the airport.

The airport is expected to lend a major fillip to the economy of Sikkim that was otherwise connected to the mainland with a single lane highway.

The air connectivity is also bound to prove a major boon to the armed forces, which had to otherwise rely on the single-lane highway to transport weapons and tanks to the border with China. Transport of heavy equipment and weapons systems took days at a time. Moreover, the highway remained disrupted through most of the rainy season, with landslides occurring frequently. The unavailability of a nearby airport during last year’s military standoff exposed the vulnerabilities of Indian forces.

Sikkim joined the Indian federation in 1975 after the monarchy was deposed following a popular referendum. The entire state of Sikkim is connected to China, Bhutan and Nepal through eight mountain passes.

India to open another bridge near China border on Dec 25
By IANS | Dec 13, 2018, 07.42 PM IST
  • Brahmaputra river, is all set to be inaugurated on December 25 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi which will facilitate faster movement of troops to Arunachal Pradesh, the country's eastern-most state that shares border with China.

The foundation stone of the bridge was laid in 1997 by the then Prime Minister H.D. Deve Gowda. The construction, however, started only in 2002 when then (late) Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee inaugurated the construction work
The 4.98 km-long bridge will not only reduce the distance for the people of Arunachal Pradesh and Assam but also facilitate faster movement of troops and supplies to the India-China border in Arunachal Pradesh.

The bridge, situated 17 km downstream of Dibrugarh and Dhemaji, spans the Brahmaputra river, and will connect Assam's Dibrugarh town with Dhemaji.

The bridge is located just over 20 km away from the Assam-Arunachal Pradesh border and therefore, is expected to act as an alternative to the Kolia Bhomora Setu in Tezpur, in providing connectivity to around five million people residing in Upper Assam and Arunachal Pradesh.

Chief Engineer of the Northeast Frontier (NF) Railway's Bogibeel Project, Mahendra Singh said 99 per cent of the bridge's construction work has been completed. The rest of the work which includes 'final finish' would be done before December 20.

Project Director of Hindustan Construction Company Limited (HCC), R.V.R. Kishore said the bridge is designed in such a way that it can withstand the movement of major battle tanks of armed forces.

"We have also used fully welded guarder technology and high quality copper bearing steel to increase the durability of the bridge," Kishore said.

The HCC was awarded a contract to construct the superstructure of Bogibeel rail-cum-road bridge in November 2011.

"The bridge will give easy and direct access to upper Assam from the rest of the country through Brahmaputra's north bank, in contrast to the current route through Guwahati in the south bank which is long. Due to its location, the bridge will be of strategic importance to India as it will significantly enhance India's ability to transport troops and supplies to its border in Arunachal Pradesh," Kishore said.

"Bogibeel Bridge falls in seismic zone-V. This zone has been the most vulnerable to earthquakes with magnitudes in excess of seven on the Richter scale. To offer good stability to the heavy spans (1700 MT), they are provided with seismic restrainers," Kishore said, adding the bridge is designed to withstand tremors up to 7 and beyond.

In May 2017, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Dhola-Sadiya Bridge, also referred to as the Bhupen Hazarika Setu. The bridge, connecting Assam and Arunachal Pradesh, spans Lohit river -- a major tributary of Brahmaputra, from the village of Dhola to Sadiya. At 9.15 km, it is the longest road bridge in India.

Centre Moots Constructing Tunnel Under Brahmaputra River In Assam
T8N

The tunnel would be located on the upstream of the Brahmaputra near Tezpur in Assam, connecting north and south banks of the river

Guwahati, April 30, 2019

For the unhindered movement of military vehicles, the government is exploring the option of constructing a strategic tunnel under the Brahmaputra river in Assam.

The tunnel would be located on the upstream of the Brahmaputra near Tezpur in Assam, connecting north and south banks of the river, as reported by Economic Times. The report further mentioned that the length of the tunnel is expected to be 12-15 km.

The tunnel may have both rail and road networks or just the latter, depending on construction difficulties and gradient.

The main reason for planning the tunnel is that the strategic bridges connecting different areas in Assam and Arunachal Pradesh and along the Line of Actual Control with China are vulnerable to interference by the northern neighbour, as reported by Economic Times

12 to 15 km??? Hmmmm

Now I could guess where they are planning it. Building one near Tezpur is not something which I could understand.

Would it technically feasible to build a hydroelectric dam on the Brahmaputra River somewhere in Assam or just upstream in the foothills??

KVIC revives Assam’ oldest Khadi Institution vandalized by Bodo insurgents 30 years ago

Posted On: 28 JAN 2021 3:08PM by PIB Delhi

One of the oldest Khadi institutions in Assam, which remained in a vandalized state bearing the scars of Bodo insurgency for over 30 years, has been brought back to life by Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC). The Khadi workshed at village Kawali in Baksa district of Assam, which was burnt down by Bodo insurgents in 1989, has been revived as a Silk reeling center by KVIC. Spinning and weaving activities will restart at the workshed with 15 women artisans and 5 other staffs in the second week of February.

The workshed was constructed by a Khadi institution called Tamulpur Anchalik Gramdan Sangh which shifted to Assam from Arunachal Pradesh following the Chinese aggression in 1962. It began operations with mustard oil production and by the year 1970, spinning and weaving activities also started there providing livelihood to 50 artisan families. However, tragedy struck when the institution was burnt down by extremists in 1989 and it remained defunct since then.

KVIC Chairman Shri Vinai Kumar Saxena said the revival of this Khadi workshed assumed historical significance and that resumption of Khadi activities would create employment for the locals. “To begin with, KVIC will develop this unit for reeling of elegant Eri Silk of Assam. Other Khadi activities like manufacturing of village industry products will also be started in future. This center will become a major employment creator for the local artisans,” Saxena said.”This initiative is aligned with Khadi’s core Gandhian principle of “rural resurgence” which also coincides with the Hon’ble Prime Minister’s vision - Sabka Sath, Sabka Vikas,” Saxena added.

This Khadi workshed is located 90 km from Guwahati. The workshed has been refurbished with the financial assistance from KVIC. The idea behind the workshed scheme is to provide better working condition to the Khadi artisans that will ultimately improve their productivity. In recent years, KVIC has revived several such Khadi institutions in states like Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Assam, Odisha and Tamil Nadu that were lying defunct for many decades.

Assam had a thriving Jute production and industry based on it, which got uprooted. Thanks to government policy. Hope to see its revival soon.

Pl see the video below. At first glance, perfectly normal scene, right? But you will be amazed, like I was, to know that this was for the first time that the National Anthem was played in the Nagaland Assembly. Just for the record, Nagaland became a State on 1 December 1963
Similarly, it was only three years ago that the National Anthem was played for the first time in the Tripura Assembly. Before you start asking Qs to which I do not have readymade answers, let me say this ‘better late than never.’

little offtopic: Not enough credits are given to mountain folks of N.E for their engineering ingenuity. When a portion of highway connecting pangin and pasighat recently got washed away due to rain and erosion, it took the natives only 5 days to re-establish connectivity using traditional method of bridge making.

I don't get it.
Body language speaks all. The goof Indian in the middle looks at this wheel with great reverance, smiling proudly, his arms at his side, casual, happy. John Kerry on the other hand, his face is constrained, he appears to be struggling, his facial expression suggests him to be thinking something negative but his affect appears to be struggling to contain this negative thought. His hands are tied in front of him, closed off, another layer in between him and the wheel, quite opposite of his Indian counterpart. His foot is not even flat on the floor, he is in motion, as if to say "let's just get through this quickly".

I know this is just a picture, but this is the painting that is painted by this picture. Know your enemy, and know them well.

Last blast of Sela Tunnel’s escape tube conducted by DG Border Roads through video conferencing

Posted On: 22 JUL 2021 7:50PM by PIB Delhi

  • The breakthrough to facilitate faster completion of Sela Tunnel
  • Sela Tunnel to be world’s longest bi-lane road tunnel at an altitude above 13,000 feet
  • To provide all weather connectivity to Tawang, Arunachal Pradesh
  • To play a crucial role in the development of North-east

The last blast of the escape tube of under-construction Sela Tunnel was conducted by Director General Border Roads (DGBR) Lt Gen Rajeev Chaudhry through video conferencingfrom New Delhi on July 22, 2021. The event was witnessed onsite by various construction players of Team BRO headed by ADGBR(East)Shri PKH Singh, Chief Engineer Project, Vartak Brig Harish Kumar and representatives of 42 Task Force and Patel Engineering Limited. This breakthrough will facilitate faster completion of Sela Tunnel by undertaking simultaneous activities in two tubes i.e.,a two-way tube of 1,555 meters and an escape tube of 980 meters, besides 8.8 kms of approach roads.

The DGBR had initiated the first blast of the escape tube during his visit on Army Day in January 2021. This tube has already crossed the 425-meter excavation mark.

Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi had laid the foundation stone of Sela Tunnel on February 09, 2019 to provide all weather connectivity to Tawang, Arunachal Pradesh through the Balipara-Charduar-Tawang Road. The construction of the tunnel started on April 01, 2019 with the first blast taking place on October 31, 2019. The excavation pace of Sela Tunnel has been swiftas it has resulted in the breaking down of the escape tube of the 1,555 meters tunnel on July 22, 2021, much ahead ofschedule. Despite COVID-19 restrictions and adverse weather conditions, the pace of works has increasedin the last 6-10 months.

On completion, Sela Tunnel will be the longest bi-lane road tunnel in the world at an altitude above 13,000 feet. This unique tunnel constructed using the latest New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM), is much below the snow line allowing all weather travel without the challenges of snow clearance. The Sela Tunnel will prove to be a boon for the people of Tawang as it will reduce travel time and ensure speedier movement across the Sela Pass. It will play a crucial role in the development of not just Arunachal Pradesh, but the entire North-East.In case of natural calamities and adverse weather, it can prove to be a vital link for evacuation of personnel.

My mom says that Mizoram were building churches, schools and police camps in Assam land. When the Assam police went there. Then people from there including civilians, police essentially formed a group.

I was like, ''hey, that tactic is very familiar from a certain another religion. Why don't they do it against them too? "
This is nothing during anti govt protests welcome china go back India free manipur slogans are regularly used.
