ISLAMABAD: The Taliban have no plans to attack Pakistan's nuclear arsenal, their spokesman told the Wall Street Journal.

A larger assault earlier this week by the Taliban on a naval base in Karachi renewed fears that Pakistan's sizable nuclear arsenal could be vulnerable.

Taliban spokesman, Ehsanullah Ehsan, dismissed those concerns on Wednesday as America's "excuse" to pressure Pakistan's government into fighting the Taliban, who he portrayed as the country's true protectors.

"Pakistan is the only Muslim nuclear power state," Ehsan said in a telephonic interview, adding that the Taliban had no intention of changing that fact. He mocked Pakistan's willingness to work with the US, saying, "Isn't it a shame for us to have the Islamic bomb, and even then we are bowing down to the pressures of America."

Following the 2008 Mumbai attacks, the Taliban offered to fight against India alongside Pakistan's army in the event of war. Still, it was impossible to judge the sincerity of Ehsan's declaration regarding Pakistan's nuclear arsenal.

Even if the Pakistani Taliban have no designs on the arms, there are myriad groups which are believed to have interest in acquiring nuclear weapons.

There is a certian measure of sincerity in the statement.Taliban is not out to inflict ruin on Pakistan, which is for all purposes its Alma mater and a hallowed ground for Islamists. Most Pakistanis believe,at all levels of the state, that Taliban have turned against the state of Pakistan only as a retribution for the assistance being rendered by Pakistan to US over its war against Islamist forces.

Most commentators argue, they have a valid argument, that the attacks now being perpetrated by Taliban and other affiliated groups will cease if Pakistan stops providing assistance to the US in its WOT efforts. You see Taliban and the state are not adversaries in principle, but have become due to prevailing circumstances, which is being argued, can be quickly reversed if Pakistan chooses so.

pakistani military establishment, esp its intelligence service, and the Taliban are mutually exclusive entities that are at cross with each other, they will soon make amends for past grievances and once focus their energies on their eternal foe.

The nukes in the possession of the Pakistani military establishment is as safe as if they were locked away in a Kandahar warehouse belonging to Taliban.

India must make it clear to the world community that if any designs of carrying out nuclear attack on India by either fallen nuclear weapons at the hand of taliban or the pakistani state is taking place and if we sense it coming then we would be bound to carry out massive pre-emptive nuclear strikes against pakistan which would surely question their survival then.

After issuing such a statement, lets see the change in attitude of pakistan which always threatens the world of nuclear threat either by the state itself or falling it in the hands of extremists.

Chex, GOI has already issued India's Nuclear Doctrine, which says any strike on India or its forces, any where by nuclear power would result in massive retaliation and it will inflict unacceptable damage on enemy.

I am well aware of that Saya sir, its just that pakistan don't have room to include the "non-state actor" card which they effectively played after the Mumbai carnage.

And in my above post i stated it to be a pre-emptive strike rather than retaliation.

I added the Northern Alliance bit because without their removal from influence within the Afghan sphere, Pakistan's planning would go to waste, they were the only hurdle in front of ISI/Mullah Omar/Bin Laden. You see during the Soviet era war in Afghanistan, the US didn't care to whom the money and stingers went to. They had very little concepts of what was happening behind their back on the ground. Pakistan was saying, sure yes the Mujahideen are being helped and supplied, but in actuality 90% of the funds and weapons were being sent to warlords who would later compose the Taliban. This the US and outside world had no idea of, but now in hindsight it's clear as broad daylight why Pakistan cut off it's long standing ties with Northern warlords and uprooted any sort of nationalism other than Pashtun nationalism from the area of influence in Pakistan and Afghanistan. ISI is composed of about 30-40% Pashtuns similar to the armed forces. They wanted to build an ethnic bridge from Pakistan to Afghanistan and then invade India from this position. Little did they know that 9/11 would cause the Northern Alliance to ally with the United States and light their plans on fire.
Solid beast tell me this answer straight,How much of the PA is thinking that "they can still invade and have dinner on the ramparts of the red fort".Do they think they still have a chance to invade India even now.How many of them realize Indians are sharpening their knives and looking for the final solution wrt to Pakistan

Pakistan's policy of enveloping the Taliban in a bear hug, even at the risk of getting smothered in the process,is explained by the sensitive nature of pashtun nationalism on both sides of the Durand line.pashtuns form the influential part of the Afghan demographics and as such are crucial in the question of Afghanistan's future.Pakistan can ill afford to allow Pashtuns in Afghanistan to organize themselves into a political force outside its orbit of influence, pashtun nationalism in Afghanistan has a tendency to ignite similar sentiments on the Pakistani side of the Durand line.

This is where India relation with Northern alliance will be tested, while we must acknowledge that NA provided Indian the means to remain relevant in Afghanistan during the taliban years, our close ties with NA,dominated by mostly non pastuns, will place at an unenviable position with regards to the majority pashtuns, who irrespective of their taliban affiliation, generally distrust the NA.

Eventually if we hope for non Taliban political force to emerge in the pashtun dominated Afghanistan and we want this force to remain cordial with India,we will have to engage the Pashtuns, which means a break with NA at some point in time.Pakistan will to sustain taliban as the sole representatives of the pashtuns.

May be their approach is more futuristic and optimistic. They may be thinking once Islamabad is captured as they were trying to do before, the nuke equipped Islamic army will became an asset to bully US support Afghan govt and rest of the civilized world. Breaching nuclear security of Pakistan is like inviting USA to intervene with no holds bar.

Taliban et al are trying hard to establish a legitimate state for last two decades. Pakistan was first one to recognize them before. I wonder what Pakistan could have turned that regime into by proliferating nuclear weapons if 9/11 hadn't had happened; like they did to many others likewise. One must not oversight why Pakistan home terrorist like OBL. The effort was to engage USA for longest time possible and (end game) endorsing Taliban for power sharing.

As far as recent terrorist attacks are concerned then one can not rule out self Injury inflicting Pakistan trying to play victim here. They have done it before and has been using their army as cannon fodder.

First of all a nation is its people and pakistan is fucked up in this case.Next the TTP and the tribals stated all the bets are off with the death of OBL.OBL's death is a watershed movement wrt to Pakistan.Next once sialkot gets completely radicalized Pakistan is fucked.OBL'death already created a horizontal split btw the mid level officers and the higher echelons of the PA.Pakistan won't come out of this in one part from the monkey trap.Even if it comes out of all this severely truncated India will not let it survive

Pakistan Nukes are the Talibans last Astra against all community world.. If they stays a threat to the Pakistan's nuke then US & other countries will be in pressure to take care of the Nuclear arsenal which leaves the Taliban with no last option when they're pushed to the corner..

Nukes are their only options to last survival.. They need it when time comes..

Any Taliban or more like Islamist takeover of the Pakistani state will have to involve active participation of the bulk of the rank and file of the Pakistani military.hence however this thing turns out eventually it will have the Pakistani military holding the reigns at the helm, including the key to those strategic assets.

All post Zia era top brass of the Pak army have been closeted Islamists anyway.

TTP doesn't have the it to assemble a nuke in the first place.Nuke is not some random bandook to shoot. If a nuke attack occurs it will be considered as an attack by the pakistani state and Pakistani generals can assume that their children and grandchildren will nicely burn green

The world's survival including India's, requires the neutralization of Pakistan's strategic assets, both in manpower and hardware. They've proven that they are the epicenter of global terrorism. India must turn up the heat or risk losing out on this opportune moment and lapse in Pakistani hegemony.
Pakistani permanently lost the race of hegemony wrt to india
