After the sortie, defence minister Sitharaman said it was “eye-opening and memorable”.

Union defence minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Wednesday undertook a sortie in the IAF’s frontline combat jet Sukhoi 30 MKI from the air base in Jodhpur.

The country’s first woman defence minister sat in the rear seat behind the pilot and was wearing the pilot’s G-suit. “She is reviewing the operational preparedness and combat capabilities,” defence sources said.

“Very proud and thankful that I’ve gone through this experience because it actually tells me with what rigor, practice, what level of readiness and how quickly they (defence personnel) have to respond to situations. It was eye-opening and memorable,” said Sitharaman after the sortie.

This is what I wished a few days ago! And it's happened!

I have high hopes from her. I'd be really pissed if she doesn't deliver.

I don't understand these rides, she will not provide any technical input or moral boost to the forces. If she has to ride something she needs to ride ageing fighter planes.

Actually it increases morale. Meeting the men/women on the ground & seeing & praising their work first hand works extremely well for soldiers' morale. There was a reason the two Bush would wear flight suits & our own CAPF have seen such an increase in capabilities under Rajnath Singh. It was this neglect to meet the troops on ground (& MOD officials too) that made Mulayam one of the worst Defence Minister ever.

I cannot think of any Indian prime minister having spent even 6 months in the Army or even their children having done any national duty in uniform.

These all are joyrides and bucket lists for any human being.

I am sure next one will be submarine ride.

Still went to Vietnam..unlike others who are all talk but would never send their own children in the line of fire.
No he didn't. He was in national gaurd & got a special exemption from serving in Vietnam (most of his cabinet did so). Even then he went AWOL & was saved by his father's influence.
And politicians don't need to have served in armed forces to increase the morale of men in uniform. Visiting them on the frontlines is a good way to do it. The other is making sure that they good quality gear on time. There are many more but these two are most basic imho

The 1st paragraph we could disagree on.
As for thr 2nd, no Bush wasn't a military pilot. He was in Texas air national gaurd only to escape the draft to Vietnam.
