Solar 'charkhas' to produce 'green clothes' - The Times of India

Solar 'charkhas' to produce 'green clothes'
IANS, Oct 2, 2010, 09.13pm IST

MUMBAI: The Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC) is finalising a project to introduce solar "charkhas" (spinning wheels) across the country and produce "green clothes", a top official said here on Saturday.

A prototype of a solar " charkha" has been developed and is undergoing field trials by the KVIC in collaboration with the Gandhigram Urja Vikas Sanstha, Amravati and the Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Rural Industrialisation, Wardha, said Kumud Joshi, KVIC chairperson.

"This is an ambitious project and the product spun from the solar 'charkhas' would be marketed as 'green cloth' in India and abroad," Joshi said.

Khadi is essentially hand-spun, hand-woven cloth and will now have technological help to assist the production with solar power, Joshi explained.

The project involves introduction of 100,000 such "charkhas", each costing around Rs.20,000, every year.

Generally one spins the "charkha" wheel with the hand. In the new model, there would be solar panels, which would draw solar power. The solar panels are connected to a battery, which stores power.

KVIC chief executive officer JS Mishra said once implemented, the solar 'charkhas' would help not only to spin effortlessly but the spinners can also earn double their present earnings, from Rs.60 per day to Rs.150 per day.

This is the second major technological innovation by the KVIC in the past couple of years.

Ex-Bihar minister dies after conviction in carnage case - The Times of India

Ex-Bihar minister dies after conviction in carnage case
Kashi Prasad, TNN, Oct 6, 2010, 12.56am IST

MUNGER: In a tragic incident, former state minister Sanjay Singh died following a cardiac arrest within an hour after a Munger court on Tuesday convicted him in a case of massacre of eight people in neighbouring Sheikhpura district in 2001.

Singh, son of late Congress stalwart Rajo Singh, was minister of state for rural development in the RJD-Congress government from 2000 to 2003. His wife Sunila Devi is Congress MLA from Sheikhpura.

Sources said said Sanjay suffered a heart attack while being taken to Munger jail after additional district and sessions judge-III Suresh Chandra Srivastava pronounced him and seven others guilty while acquitting two other accused, Banke Singh and Mrityunjay Singh. He was rushed to the sadar hospital where he died in course of treatment.

As the news spread, irate supporters of late Singh vandalised the court. Many court documents were torn and thrown out and furnitures damaged. No court officer or employee was, however, hurt as a police team led by DSP (HQ) Arun Kumar Panchalar soon appeared on the scene and controlled the situation.

Reports of arson and violence also came from Sheikhpura, native district of the Singhs.

Munger sadar hospital deputy superintendent Dr Rakesh Kumar told TOI Singh's supporters forcibly took away the body soon after the Congress leader was declared dead.

The massacre took place on December 26, 2001 in front of Ambedkar Gate near the Tanti bridge, a few kms from Sheikhpura. According to additional advocate general Arvind Kumar Sinha, the victims included Sheikhpura RJD president Kashinath Yadav, Sheikhpura district board member Anil Mahto, Kusumba mukhiya Awadhesh Kumar and Hathiyama mukhiya Sachchidanand Prasad.

The eight RJD men were gunned down while they were returning to Sheikhpura in a four-wheeler after meeting party leader and then cabinet minister Ashok Choudhary at Barbigha.

The accused included Singh's father Rajo. The then Begusarai MP was gunned down on September 9, 2005 in the district Congress office at Sheikhpura.

The court has fixed October 7 as the date for deciding the quantum of punishment to the convicts in the case.

Policeman sodomizes a dozen schoolchildren in Rajasthan - The Times of India

Policeman sodomizes a dozen schoolchildren in Rajasthan
TNN, Oct 4, 2010, 04.00am IST

AJMER: The horror stories of cops' brutalities continue in Rajasthan: days after rape and murder of a woman constable by her colleagues in Kota, a constable has been sent to Police Lines on charges of sodomizing at least a dozen schoolchildren at a police outpost in Ajmer's Kishangarh town.

The matter came to light when an NGO approached the police and media along with children, including some victims. The children study at a government school situated near the police outpost where the accused constable was deputed in Kishangarh.

The police said investigations were on, and that the constable would be arrested if the allegations were found true. According to reports, the accused, identified as Indrajeet Singh, was a constable attached to a police outpost situated outside the Kishangarh Railway Station. "The school, where children from nearby villages study, is not very far from the outpost," said Hariprasad Sharma, SP (Ajmer).

Indrajeet Singh allegedly lured children to the outpost after the school hours. He would promise to drop them back at the school gate and take them to the outpost. "During the time, the other outpost staff were out on duty.

The NGO has complained that Indrajeet threatened the children if they complained and sodomized them," said a police officer. However, the children informed the NGO about it. The NGO complained to the SP, Ajmer.

IANS, Oct 2, 2010, 06.00pm IST

KOTA: Two Rajasthan policemen were arrested on Saturday in connection with rape and murder of a woman constable in a police station earlier this week, police said.

Both the policemen were arrested Saturday and sent by a court to judicial custody till Oct 4, a police official said.

According to preliminary investigations, the rape and murder occurred inside Chechat police station here on Thursday night. Driver Desraj and Constable Laangri raped and then murdered the woman constable.

The blood-stained body of the victim was found in the barracks the next morning, the official said.

The post-mortem examination of the body showed the woman was raped, the official said.

"Besides arresting the two policemen, the remaining staff of the police station have been ordered to be sent to police lines," Rajasthan Home minister Shanti Dhariwal said.

Dhariwal said that such acts cannot be tolerated in any circumstances.

"The additional director general of police (vigilance) will probe the rape and murder case," he added.

Meanwhile, the state government has announced a compensation of Rs.10 lakh for the victim's family.

Ex-hubby booked for posting woman's fake profile on net - The Times of India

Ex-hubby booked for posting woman's fake profile on net
TNN, Oct 4, 2010, 04.19am IST

JAIPUR: A 25-year- old woman has lodged an FIR against her former husband and his family for posting a fake profile of her on Orkut to defame her. Mobile numbers, address and other personal details of her and her younger sister have been posted, she said. She alleged that they were being harassed by late night ISD calls. She filed an FIR with the Mahesh Nagar police station on a court order on Saturday. The accused are yet to be probed.

According to Alok Kumar Saini, in-charge of Mahesh Nagar police station, the victim is a resident of Surya Nagar near Gopalpura Bypass. "The victim had married Shekhar Sharma, resident of Mahaveer Nagar in 2008. She said her husband and her in-laws harassed her for dowry and they finally separated. Shekhar, however, married again," said SHO Alok Kumar.

In the FIR, the victim alleged that her ex-husband prepared her fake profile in the name of "Navodita" and her sister on Orkut. "Shekhar also posted their mobile numbers, address and other details on the site," said the officer.

They were reportedly mentioned as call girls. The profile claimed Navodita was also an astro vastu expert. "As the numbers were available on the site, they were flooded with calls from all parts of the world," the officer added.

"She said the callers have been using obscene language. Most of the international calls came in late at night," said the officer.

The victim approached a local court which ordered the police to lodge an FIR against Shekhar and his family members, Vinod Kumar, Viren, Suchitra and Asha Sharma.

Details of two mobiles are being examined and "We will interrogate the husband and other accused soon," said SHO Alok Kumar.

'Groom' meets doom after 55 cases - The Times of India

'Groom' meets doom after 55 cases
TNN, Oct 5, 2010, 12.46am IST

JAISALMER: For Jiyaram, his "prolonged honeymoon" period was continuing blissfully till he met his doom recently.

Jiyaram (40), was booked for 20 theft cases. But he had also committed another strange crime. He posed as a dulha (groom) at several villages and knocked on the doors of homes where girls were married off at an infant age and neither the bride nor their family members had seen the groom.

He would introduce himself as the groom who had "come to consumate his marriage." The naive villagers, too, entertained him and he fled next morning with booty of his "bride's" jewellery. He told police that he gathered information about the girls from aged villagers. He started doing this when he was just 19 and he was caught after his 55th case.

However, Jiyaram was not lucky always. He was thrashed by the girl's family at times. Some even approached the Barmer Police for help, while most families kept quiet fearing social stigma.

SP Barmer, Santosh Chalke, told TOI that more than 20 cases of theft were registered against Jiyaram at various police stations of the district. He was arrested recently and is out on bail.

US teenager's bail plea rejected - The Times of India

US teenager's bail plea rejected
TNN, Oct 5, 2010, 12.46am IST

JODHPUR: The Juvenile Justice Board on Monday rejected the bail application of Jon Carlo Patton, a US teenager accused in the murder of his mother Cynthia Iannarelli at a resort in Osian near Jodhpur on the night of August 12. The bail application was filed by his father, George Richard Patton, a professor at University of Pittsburgh, who arrived in Jodhpur on Monday.

Assistant public prosecutor N K Sankhla said the presiding officer Ishwari Lal Verma heard both the sides and rejected the bail request of Jon Carlo citing the brutality and seriousness of the crime. Police have formally charged the teenager with murder and destruction of evidence under sections 302 and 201 of the IPC respectively. Patton had denied these charges.

The bail application was filed by the teenager's father because being a minor, only the accused's custodian can request for the bail.

On the other hand, the counsel for the defence, Manish Vyas said they would go to the sessions court for the bail.

"We argued in the board that Jon Carlo was falsely implicated in the murder of his mother," said Vyas. There are various weaknesses and missing links in the chargesheet filed by the police, he said. Also, the police delayed the filing of the First Information Report and there was no eyewitness to the murder, he added. They were also yet to recover the murder weapon.

Jon Carlo was arrested from the Jodhpur airport on the morning of August 13 after he fled from the spot for the airport in a taxi from Osian. Patton's clothes were later found by police, but no knife has been found.

KOLKATA: La Martiniere for Boys principal Sunirmal Chakravarthy will continue to serve the school along with the three other teachers, who were arrested and bailed out on Monday in connection with 13-year-old student Rouvanjit Rawla's suicide in February. The boy had killed himself after he was canned at the school.

The school authorities came out in their support after a governing body meeting on Tuesday afternoon. ''The accused, including the principal, are yet to be held guilty and it's not binding on the school to act against them till the charges are proved,'' said school secretary Supriyo Dhar.

Addressing the media after the board meeting, Dhar clarified that the school wasn't contemplating any action against the teachers.

La Martiniere to abide by court order
PTI, Oct 5, 2010, 06.10pm IST

KOLKATA: Hauled up by the Calcutta High Court for not promoting a student, La Martiniere School for Boys on Tuesday decided to abide by its order to promote a fourth standard student and stood by the principal and three teachers arrested in the Rauvanjit Rawla caning case.

"We will abide by the high court order and take action," the school's governing body secretary Supriyo Dhar told newspersons about Srijan Banerjee, who was not promoted to Class V twice for "unsatisfactory" performance.

Srijan's father had moved the high court challenging the school's decision not to promote him for the second consecutive year under the provisions of Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Act, 2009.

The school also decided to stand by principal Sunirmal Chakraborti and three other teachers who were arrested yesterday on charges relating to the caning of Rouvanjit, a class VIII student who had allegedly committed suicide four days after corporal punishment for misbehaviour in school in February.

Mid-day meal grains rotting in Nagpur schools - The Times of India

Mid-day meal grains rotting in Nagpur schools
Falguni Banerjee, TNN, Oct 6, 2010, 07.25am IST

NAGPUR: Authorities of government-aided schools in the city are burdened with a peculiar problem. They don't know where and how to store the several quintals of grain supplied by Zilla Parishad (ZP) for mid-day meal scheme.

To accommodate the grains supplied in bulk by the government, school authorities are forced to convert labs and staff rooms into storage rooms. Worse, the grains often get spoilt due to neglect and end up being a feast for rodents and pests. At Madan Gopal Agrawal School at Sitabuldi, sacks of rice are dumped one above the other in an unkempt ground floor classroom that also serves as staff room.

"It's a tough task storing and saving rice from rodents. The agents dump 20 to 25 quintals of rice in several sacks at the schools to be used for 2-3 months. Depending on attendance of the students, we utilize only two to three quintals in a month," said a teacher.

Court allows Shiv Sena to hold Dussehra rally at Shivaji Park
PTI, Oct 11, 2010, 02.52pm IST

MUMBAI: The Bombay High Court on Monday allowed Shiv Sena to hold its traditional Dussehra rally at Shivaji Park in Mumbai on October 17.

The court, however, said the party will have to follow noise pollution control rules regarding silence zones.

In May, responding to a PIL, court had asked BMC to declare the area as silence zone.

Therefore, the authorities had refused permission for the rally.

As per the noise pollution control rule, sound levels in a silence zone cannot exceed 50 decibel.

MUMBAI: Six persons have been questioned in connection with the burglary at Kalika Jewellers in Andheri (E). The thieves had dug a six-feet tunnel to enter the store. Ornaments worth Rs 3.5 lakh were looted.

Bihar polls: Nitish, Modi, Lalu seeking votes for criminals

PATNA: For a state seeking to erase the taint of corruption and lawlessness, this sure is a step backwards. Bihar, which goes to polls beginning Oct 21, will see a host of top politicians campaigning for candidates with criminal records.

Elections to the 243-seat state assembly will be held in six phases, from Oct 21 to Nov 20, with results being declared Nov 24. While political parties are preparing various strategies to lure voters, one common thread which unites them is the long list of candidates with criminal pasts.

Both regional parties and national parties have lined-up their stars to canvass for votes.

The lineup features chief minister Nitish Kumar, deputy chief minister Sushil Kumar Modi, Janata Dal-United (JD-U) national president Sharad Yadav, Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) chief Lalu Prasad and his alliance partner Ram Vilas Paswan of Lok Janshakti Party (LJP).

Among the national parties, politicians who will be in the state to campaign include Congress president Sonia Gandhi and general secretary Rahul Gandhi, as well as Bharatiya Janata Party's leaders like party president Nitin Gadkari , L.K. Advani and Arun Jaitley.

Nitish Kumar, who is not only the star campaigner for his party JD-U but also the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), is seeking votes for criminal-turned-politicians like Sarfaraz Alam , Neeraj Kumar Singh and Bucchan Yadav .

The charges against the trio include extortion, kidnapping, and murder.

Alam, son of the controversial former central minister Mohammad Taslimuddin, is the JD-U candidate from Jokihat constituency. Singh is party candidate from Chatapur while Yadav is contesting from Bihariganj, which goes to polls Oct 21.

Nitish Kumar is also campaigning for Lesi Singh, wife of slain ganglord Butan Singh, who is contesting from Dhamdaha constituency. Lesi Singh is a former legislator and former chairperson of Bihar Women's Commission.

Other tainted JD-U candidates include Bima Bharti, wife of gangster Awadesh Mandal (Rupauli constituency), Punam Devi, wife of criminal-turned-politician Ranvir Yadav (Khagaria constituency) and Annu Shukla (Lalganj constituency), wife of JD-U legislator Munna Shukla, who is currently in jail for the murder of former Bihar minister Brijbihari Prasad.

Nitish Kumar has exposed his double-face, says Communist Party of India-Marxist youth leader Gopal Prasad Sharma. "Nitish will campaign for many such candidates from his party," Sharma told IANS.

These include Manoranjan Singh alias Dhumal Singh, Sunil Pandey, and Anant Singh, regarded to be close to the chief minister.

Sushil Kumar Modi of the BJP is campaigning for Damyanti Devi, wife of gangster Bhagir Yadav, in Narpatganj constituency.

He will also seek votes for criminal-turned-politician Nityanand Rai and Chitranjan Kumar, a former member from Pandav Sena, a private upper-caste militia.

Lalu and Paswan, who have formed a coalition, will canvass for candidates like Shankar Singh, Dilip Yadav, and Surendra Yadav, all with criminal records.

Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi, who will campaign for all the six phases, will campaign for candidates like Lovely Anand, wife of criminal-turned-politician Anand Mohan, and Ranjeet Ranjan, wife of former MP Rajiv Ranjan alias Pappu Yadav, sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of Communist Party of India-Marxist leader Ajit Sarkar.

"Rahul Gandhi is coming Thursday and Sonia Gandhi will campaign Oct 18," a Congress leader said.

The list of tainted candidates who will see their party bosses canvassing for them is exhaustive.

According to a report by the Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) and National Election Watch (NEW), a group of more than 1,200 NGOs, as many as 154 candidates in the first round of polls are facing criminal charges.

Out of these, 97 have cases of murder, attempt to murder, kidnapping, extortion, causing hurt by dangerous weapons and dacoity against them, the report said.

Hisar's supermom Krishna owes it to her husband
Bhaskar Mukherjee, TNN, Oct 18, 2010, 11.41pm IST

HISAR: My husband kept my aunts promise and motivated me to bring the gold medal for our nation, said Krishna Poonia, gold medallist in discus throw at the Commonwealth Games, as she was felicitated in her village of Agroha in Hisar district on Monday.

My son called me on phone from home when I was representing India and said, Please come back with the gold medal. I assured him that I will bring the gold for our nation and I kept my promise with my son too, said Krishna, who was accompanied by her husband Virender Poonia and her son Lakshey at the felicitation ceremony.

"I have been facing a barrage of questions about my son from the media during the last two days and since I am an emotional person, it hurts me a lot," Poonia told reporters.

"They (media) keep on bringing up the emotional angle and keep repeating the same thing - questions about my son from whom I have been away for many years due to training," she said with tears welling up in her eyes.

Poonia, along with Harwant Kaur and national record holder Seema Antil had swept the medals at the discuss throw event of the Games. Poonias medal is only the second gold for India in athletics after Milkha Singh's 440 yard race triumph in the 1958 and she is the first woman in the country to win the yellow metal in athletics in a quadrennial event.

Some sections of the media even labeling her a "super mom". However, all these pesky queries have drained her emotionally.

"If you keep the emotional part aside, I will be more than happy to answer all your questions," was her advice to some newshounds who kept prodding her to speak about her son and family.

After Krishnas mother Shanti Devi passed away, she moved to Loharu with her Aunt Prem Mallik and continued with her practice. In 1999, Virender, an International hammer thrower, married Krishna.

When I was getting married, my aunt asked my husband to allow me to keep practising after marriage. My husband kept his promise and helped me to bag a gold medal for my country.

For the villagers, Krishnas achievement is a matter of immense pride. Mahaveer, a villager, said: Krishna is our motivation and role model. Every girl and boy wants to follow her footsteps and bring glory to the nation.

Kamalistan sold to 3 builders for Rs 200 cr
Nauzer K Bharucha & Bharati Dubey, TNN, Oct 20, 2010, 06.02am IST

MUMBAI: Bollywood's landmark Kamalistan studio, where a slew of pathbreaking films like Razia Sultan, Amar Akbar Anthony and Kaalia were shot over the decades, will finally slip out of the control of its owners—the three children of late filmmaker Kamaal Amrohi, who built the studio in 1958.

TOI has learned that the over 15-acre property in Jogeshwari (East) has been acquired by three developers—Pune-based builder Avinash Bhosale, construction firm DB Realty and the Luthrias, who once owned Bandra's erstwhile Sea Rock Hotel.

The stakes acquired by these three parties collectively amount to about Rs 200 crore, although market sources say the worth of this prime land is at least Rs 500 crore, considering its strategic location—near Jogeshwari-Vikhroli Link Road.

Since 2008, the siblings, Tajdar, Shandar and their sister Rukshar Amrohi, have openly squabbled over their father's land. The matter finally landed up in the Bombay high court early this year. Said Rukhsar, "If not for the family dispute, the property would have fetched us nothing less than Rs 500 crore. But I guess we had no choice.''

The three siblings are directors of Mahal Pictures Private Ltd, the company that owns the studio founded by their famous father, who directed hits like Mahal and Pakeezah.

In a glamorous twist to the controversy, one of the brothers, Shandar, had declared that he had adopted actor Preity Zinta as his daughter and that he would pledge his share of the property to her.

Avinash Bhosale, known to be well connected in government circles, told TOI that he had paid Rs 60 crore to Rukshar and her son Waseem for their one-third share of the property. DB Realty is believed to have shelled out close to Rs 100 crore for Tajdar Amrohi's share. And eldest brother Shandar had already entered into an agreement with the Luthrias a couple of years ago for about Rs 40 crore.

"The three developers are now putting up a shareholder's agreement to develop the land. It will be a residential construction,'' said sources in the know of the deal.

Rukhsar told TOI on Tuesday, "I did not want my father's dream to be sold in this way. But I had to do it because of my brothers, who felt that the studio was not getting them enough income. It was more of a forced decision for me because my brothers had struck individual deals with builders. So I went ahead and signed up with Avinash Bhosale.''

Getting nostalgic, she added, " My father had mentioned in his will that no decision to sell should be taken till his grandchildren turned 40. But my brothers did not want to honour it. They wanted to enjoy the money they got from selling his studio.

"When my father bought the land, it was just a forest. I remember going with him and asking him why he bought a jungle. He would tell me that he would turn it into a studio, which he eventually did. Although he did not shoot Pakeezah at this studio, Razia Sultan, one of his most ambitious ventures, was made here. Manmohan Desai and Subhash Ghai considered the studio very lucky and shot most of their films here. Some of the super-hits shot here were Kaalia, Amar Akbar Anthony and Dharmveer.

"My father had said, 'whenever you miss me, visit the studio and you will see me walking down the steps of the garden area','' Rukhsar said, teary-eyed.

Elder brother Tajdar, too, said he was unhappy selling his stake to a builder. "I would not like to divulge any details, but yes I can confirm that I have signed up with DB Realty. However, I have laid down a condition that my father's name will continue to be part of the project.'' Like Rukhsar, Tajdar also admitted that the property would have sold at a much higher rate had there been no infighting in the family.

The eldest, Shandar, maintained that he had pledged his share to Preity Zinta. "I don't care what my brother and sister feel about it. It is because of their harassment that I was forced to sell my share as I never got my due. They keep maligning me. In fact, the first person I had approached was Amitabh Bachchan, through his manager Sheetal Jain, as I wanted to talk to him to see if he was interested in buying my shares. But he did not respond.''

Shandar said he was hopeful that Preity would keep her word of accepting his share. "She has been taking care of me and is in touch with me. She will never cheat me.''

In October 2008, TOI was the first to report that Tajdar and Rukshar Amrohi had objected to brother Shandar "surreptitiously'' selling off his stake and conveying the studio land to the Luthrias without their knowledge.
