New nuclear submarine to be launched today

Russia's newest nuclear powered multipurpose attack submarine the Graney (Yasen) class "Severodvinsk" will be launched from the Sevmash shipyard today. Present at the launch is President Dmitry Medvedev.

"Severomorsk" is the first of Russia's new fourth generation nuclear submarines. The launch ceremony was originally scheduled for May 7, but was postponed because of technical reasons, a source in the United Shipbuilding Corporation told RIA Novosti.

Construction of "Severomorsk" started in 1993, but was halted, mainly because of financial setbacks. The submarine is planned to be delivered to the Russian Navy in 2011.

New architecture and new weapons

Vessels of the Graney class will be most silent submarines in the world. They will have a maximum speed of 16 knots surfaced and 31 knots submerged. They will be 119m long, 13,5m wide and 9,4m high. They will be armed with 24 cruise missiles of the type SS-NX-26.

The submarines will have a completely new architecture and new types of armament. For the first time in Russian ship building, the torpedo tubes and missile launchers are placed not in the nose section but in the mid-section of the hull, PRIME-TASS writes. The sail (tower) will be streamlined and oval.

President Medvedev, who is also the Supreme Commander of the Russian Armed Forces, has visited Sevmash once before, in July 2009, as BarentsObserver reported.

New Generation Submarine for the Russian Fleet

Russia is facing a very challenging task to modernize its naval forces. To achieve this, the country's experts are working on a program for military and civil ship building. To launch a series of Severodvinsk-class submarines is one of the priorities of this program, the President Dmitry Medvedev said attending the official float-out ceremony at the port of Severodvinsk.

The Russian leader described the new multipurpose attack submarine as a good example of how a difficult project may be implemented. The new Severodvisnk submarine will help Russia modernize its navy to be ready to react to present-day threats. Russia will keep on with naval modernization despite the economic crisis, Mr. Medvedev said. "We must boost our ship building industry despite all existing difficulties, as it has been announced in our state arms program", said Mr. Medvedev.

The fourth generation Severodvinsk, the Yasen (Graney) class submarine, was built at the Sevmash shipyard. Graney class nuclear submarines are designed to launch a variety of long-range cruise missiles with nuclear warheads, and effectively engage submarines, surface warships and land-based targets. The new submarine's armament includes 24 cruise missiles, and is also equipped with eight torpedo launchers, as well as mines and anti-ship missiles such as SS-N-16 Stallion.

Experts note that the Severodvinsk submarine will be equipped with the long-range missiles. These won't be Bulava missiles which will be used at some other strategic submarines, the experts stress. The new tests of the Bulava missiles will be carried out from the nuclear submarine Dmitry Donskoy in July-September. However the Severodvinsk submarine is not a substitute for the project of the Dmitry Donskoy submarine admiral Vladimir Kamoyedov stresses.

Their purposes are different. Severodvinsk is a multi-functional submarine which is able to attack surface ships and aircraft carrier groups while the strategic task of the Dmitry Donskoy submarine is to protect and attack land objects.

According to the estimations of Western and Russian experts, the Severodvinsk submarine will be quieter and much more powerful than the USA's Sea Wolf. The Russian Navy will receive the first Severodvinsk submarine in 2011 and than six more submarines of this class are to be built.

New Russian nuclear submarine will not enter serial production - paper

A fourth-generation Russian nuclear-powered multipurpose attack submarine that was floated out on Tuesday is too expensive for serial production, a business daily said on Wednesday.

On Tuesday, Russian President Dmitry Medvedev arrived in the northern port of Severodvinsk to attend the official float-out ceremony.

The construction of the Severodvinsk, the first Project 885 Yasen (Graney) class submarine, began in 1993 at the Sevmash shipyard in Severodvinsk, but has since been dogged by financial setbacks. Russia planned to float out the submarine on May 7 to mark the 65th anniversary of the victory over Nazi Germany in May 1945.

Russia's Vedomosti daily said the price of the strategic project was kept secret, but the estimated cost reached $1 billion.

Mikhail Barabanov, the editor-in-chief of Moscow Defense Brief magazine, said the submarine's cost was too high to make it viable for serial production.

Barabanov told Vedomosti that the U.S. Navy did not produce a large number of advanced Sea Wolf submarines, similar to the Severodvinsk vessel, since they were too expensive. Instead of these, they use cheaper and unsophisticated Virginia-class submarines.

The expert said the Russian Navy would probably replace the Severodvinsk nuclear submarine with a more affordable analogue. Barabanov said the second Yasen (Graney) class submarine Kazan was the most probable alternative to the Severodvinsk submarine.

Russian experts expect Graney-class submarines to boost the Navy's operational effectiveness and combat capabilities.

Graney-class nuclear submarines are designed to launch a variety of long-range cruise missiles (up to 3,100 miles or 5,000 km), with conventional or nuclear warheads, and effectively engage submarines, surface warships and land-based targets.

The submarine's armament includes 24 cruise missiles and eight torpedo launchers, as well as the mines and anti-ship missiles.

This is a SSNs, least to the navy's needs and interests, as of now. What we need instead is TRUE SSBNs and to my belief we should spend each penny for the purpose according to priority rule..
