N.J. woman sentenced in scheme to send defense drawings to India

A North Brunswick woman was sentenced Thursday for illegally sending military technical information to India. An indictment also says a manufacturer she co-owned in India produced wing pins for F-15 fighter planes that failed, forcing 47 of the aircraft to be grounded. (Frances Micklow | The Star-Ledger)

TRENTON — A 50-year-old North Brunswick woman was sentenced Thursday to nearly five years in prison for conspiring to send sensitive military technical information to India, U.S. Attorney Paul J.. Fishman announced.

Hannah Robert pleaded guilty last April to one count of conspiracy to violate the Arms Export Control Act before U.S. District Judge Anne E. Thompson in Trenton. Thompson Thursday sentenced her to 57 months in prison.

Until late 2012, Robert operated a defense supply company, One Source USA, out of a residence in Mount Laurel Township, an indictment says.

Robert, who also co-owned a plant that manufactured defense hardware items in India, worked with a co-conspirator to send drawings and technical information to India without approval from the State Department, it said.
Secretly using a computer at a Camden County church where she volunteered,Robert uploaded "thousands" of technical drawings about parts for, among other things, torpedo systems in nuclear submarines, military attack helicopters and F-15 fighters to India without State Department approvals, the indictment said.

The information was used not only to produce materials for the U.S. Defense Department, the company in India also bid on defense contracts for other nations, including the United Arab Emirates, the indictment said. In other cases, information was sent to facilitate bids for products destined for customers in Pakistan and Indonesia, it said.

In addition to sending the technical information to an Indian co-conspirator, Robert bid on defense contracts in the U.S. claiming they were made domestically, but in fact were made in the plant she co-owned in India, the indictment says.

In at least one case, the indictment says, the items her company supplied failed. Pins used to attach the F-15's wings to its fuselage were not made with the proper materials, forcing the military to ground 47 F-15 fighter aircraft, the indictment says.

The grounding cost taxpayers more than $150,000, Fishman's office said.

Robert and the co-conspirator in India provided false certifications and inspection reports for the parts to cover up the scheme, the indictment said.

"Hannah Robert circumvented the U.S. government and provided export-controlled technical data related to various types of military technology to an individual in India," said Assistant Attorney General for National Security John P. Carlin. "We will vigorously prosecute and bring to justice those who abuse their access to sensitive defense information and violate the Arms Export Control Act."

Robert will serve three years of supervised release after her prison term and was ordered by Thompson to pay $181,015 in restitution.

Fishman credited special agents of the Defense Department's Criminal Investigative Service Northeast Field Office and special agents of the Department of Homeland Security, Homeland Security Investigations, Counter Proliferation Investigations, with the investigation leading to the sentencing.

All governments spy on all other governments. Usually, if spies are found, there is either a swap or they are silently imprisoned. If this story has been printed in the press, it means they intended to humiliate India. They keep coming up with such stories about China accusing them of stealing military secrets all the time, most of them are just, well..for the lack of a better phrase 'the boy who cried wolf' type of media hit jobs to berate the target nation.

In case you don't remember, there was a news report last month alleging that Indian materials were being used by ISIS. When I read the article to find out whether these materials were guns, bullets, bombs, detonators, turns out it was none of these and it was just household wire. Damn! After pumping billions of dollars worth of extremist material and weapons into the warzone, now the west has the gall to accuse us of 'supplying material to ISIS', and what are we supplying? wire! BC!

It might well be the case that India managed to ingenuously develop something and the military-industrial complex in Murica got pissed at losing a hefty contract and decided to take a potshot at India. It is a common practice in the west to behave like kids and throw tantrums when things don't go their way. Remember 'India's Daughter' when Typhoon was rejected? Yup. Remember the propaganda they did against Dhruv helicopters to prevent exports? they even managed to fund a fake NGO in India called army widows foundation or something like that to make it look like Indian military widows of soldiers who died in Dhruv crashes were protesting against Dhruv helicopters. That's how Murican propaganda works, especially when you start encroaching on their bread and butter, which is weapons sales.

If it were a real case of espionage, they would have sentenced her and be done with it, instead of planting the news in the media with the name of the recipient country to make us look bad. Perhaps the negotiations between Carter and Parrikar have hit a roadblock, leading the Muricans to throw tantrums in frustration.

Does anyone remember when Murican media came out with a synchronized broadcast on all their propaganda channels claiming that their intel agencies have 'found a paper which details ISIS plans to attack India'? What do you think that was? It was Murica's veiled threat to create a cover for a terrorist attack in India. It was meant as a signal to the government. So these monkey are known to use such armtwisting tactics from time to time. Needs to be taken in that context.

Western media ki har baat seriously loge toh dimag ki maa behen ho jayegi.

Just drawings .
Design drawing are of very high value in any project.

@ontopic

How come India does not have the same resolve to plunder Chinese military technological advancements.
This will serve dual purpose:
1. Eye on Chinese military technology advancement
2. Reduction of cost and time for our own indigenous weapons programs.

This woman must be given a lethal injection if found guilty.
Why, I'm wishing such nice American girls and boys must expand throughout the yankeeland. It will ease our path to develop tech. If we are taking a decade to male something, we'll make that in 2-3 years. :biggrin2: God bless Yanks. :nono:

Once, you're faithful to Tamil Nationalism, noe Americans, can you even think of Indian Patriotism at least one second. It's your motherland.

If the above news is true and US tech was leaked to India, Government must not waste time.

Indian PSU's are so brutally incompetent that even if you give them DIY manual with pictorial diagrams, they will still not be able to build it.

Indian manufacturing technology is basically a joke, first let us build proper spanners, wrenches, nuts, bolts, screw drivers and them dream of higher stuffs.

Well, we build and export several things to US as well. And it's not as bad as it can't copy weapons. It's not even competent as of your stupid AAPtard claims otherwise India would not be 11th USTPO patent ranking.
Go inside our Defense industry or Civilian sector instead of playing video games at home.
According to you,
"Indians are zombies with no minds and ankees, ruskies and chinkies are inta galactica supa dupa powa."
If you know, I have posted a new thread about Indian Laser Technology. Go through that.
And you'll come to know how ahead we've moved.

You have called Indian Industry incompetent and useless. I will love to know about your source or you are other bootlicker or westerners or communist masters or again an AAPtard with inferiority complex.

Test data can help us on who to make the jet without putting to much money, like placement of engine ,effect of S shaped ducts and how to overcome it etc

Oh Guys! Please, read more about this case. She owned two companies in US which had contract with Pentagon. And owned one company in India, which manufactured parts. She wanted to use India as a low input cost base for manufacturing parts, in order to supply to operators of US type in middle east and near by region. What looks like she could have tried to transfer machine drawings of some of those parts to her Indian company. The parts seem though classified but it seems they were not of that high value, give the quantum of sentence is just 5 years, compare to decade or more back incident, where Indian NRI's who were jailed for many more years for supplying computer chips to Indian Govt entities, when India was under sanctions

Chill! don't need to beat yourself over this. But this should give you confidence in Indian manufacturing abilities, That's its being considered as base for manufacturing high end parts for aero sector.
