February 21, 2009: India is buying twenty Ground Master 400 portable radars. The system fits in a 20 foot shipping container and weighs less than ten tons. Thus it can be carried on one truck. This is an AESA radar that can be set up by a four man crew in 30 minutes. It can detect large aircraft at up to nearly 500 kilometers, while smaller combat aircraft are spotted at closer to 400 kilometers. Aircraft can be seen at up to 33 kilometers altitude. The entire system will, on average, operate for 3,500 hours before experiencing a failure.
India and the manufacturer (Thales) are still working out delivery details. Each radar system will cost about $5 million.

This will be a Big Boost! I am happy that we are buying a lot of Stuff. But I havent heard much of this Radar, anyone got pics?

thats the actual aim there were radar gaps in various sections especially in the low flying objects. these will be an welcome additions.

The radar, developed by Thales Air Systems in Limours, France in partnership with the company's Surface Radar activity in Hengelo, the Netherlands, is a fully digital solid-state radar that operates in a 400-MHz-wide band between 2.9 - 3.3 GHz (high S-band).

Ground Master 400 features a rotating antenna that operates at 10 rpm, so that every six seconds the full volume is scanned using the radar's multi-beam scanning principle (in which more than 10 vertically-stacked receive beams are covering the entire air defense elevation coverage).

Instrumented range is 250 naut.mi., detection range against small targets is 200 naut.mi. and the radar is effective up to an altitude of 100,000 ft.

The radar is credited (by ThalesRaytheonSystems) with range accuracy of 50 meters, an azimuth accuracy of 0.3 degrees and an altitude accuracy of 2,000 ft. at 100 naut.mi. distance.

Resolution in range is given as 200 meters and as 3 degrees in azimuth.

The radar features electronic stabilization between -6 and +5 degrees.

Ground Master 400 availability figures released by the company are a mean time between failures of 3,000 hrs. and a maintenance downtime per year of 30 hrs. Maintenance periods can be planned to take place four times/year.

Overall, the system fits in a single 20-ft. ISO container (weight: 10 tons) that can be air-lifted in C-130-size aircraft or as an external load underneath a Chinook-type helicopter, ThalesRaytheonSystems says.

When deployed on site, the radar can be connected to operate as part of a networked air defense organization and can be controlled from a remote location, the company claims.



The last para is of particular importance is it possible that this new radar will form a part of the missile defence system with india is trying to set up in the future.

i wonder if posting all this information about frequencies and bands about the radar by thales will help the enemies with their jammers

20 of these, good numbers, will go near the border towns both towards pak and china as well as coastal regions as well, gr8 coverage, could it be the central acquisition radars for the SPYDER SAM??

CAR of the Spyder is MF-STAR or EL/M 2248.

DUBAI – Thales has won a contract to supply the Indian Air Force 19 low-level transportable radar systems based on the Ground Smarter (GS) 100 sensor, the defense company announced at the air show here.
Thales will build six of the 19 radars at its Limours facility, southwest of Paris. Under a technology transfer agreement, its local partner Bharat Electronics Ltd (BEL) will build the remaining 13 units in India, the French defense company said Nov. 15.
Each low level transportable radar system comprises the GS 100 radar, operational and communications shelters, an energy subsystem, mobility subsystem and quarters for personnel.
“This contract reinforces our position in the Indian region as a major supplier of air defense radars,” said Richard Deakin, Thales senior vice president and head of the air systems division. “BEL is a leading supplier of defense electronics systems and subsystems and plays a leading role in a number of major Indian defense programmes.”
The GS 100, based on the SR3D radar platform, is a mobile, modular and multifunctional sensor designed to track complex target manoeuvres at very low altitudes, Thales said.
The sensor can detect and track targets up to a range of 180 km. The SR3D platform is also used in the Ground Master 400 long range radar, launched into the market in 2007.
No financial details were given. The international competition for the radar was launched in 2003

BANGALORE - Thales has completed price negotiations on an offer of a package of long-range low-level radars for the Indian Air Force, with the deal due to work through administrative approvals, a company executive said Feb. 12 at the Aero India show.
"The price negotiations are concluded," the Thales executive said.

The next stage is for the deal to clear the administrative procedure, he said. The contract covers around 20 units.An Indian Air Force officer said the service has chosen the Thales system, valued at about $100 million.
Thales responded to the international tender launched by India about two years ago with a product based on its new Ground Master 400 series of scalable radars, developed on its own funds. The French company beat a rival offer from Elta Systems of Israel.
Other customers of the new radar include Slovenia, Malaysia and French Guyana, which bought the air defense radar in December for coverage of the Kouro region.
