Kalashnikov Israel ,, looks like a Great Gun , if they haven't touched the reliability part of AK then this is a beauty .

AK-Alfa was launched in Feb this year, if true there is no way this rifle is in contention this early.

Army's testing cycle is itself atleast a year, because they have to wait for both winter and summer seasons.

Heckler & Koch to stop doing deals with non-NATO countries: DPA

German arms manufacturer Heckler & Koch will no longer sign contracts to supply countries outside of NATO's influence because it has become too difficult to obtain government approval for such deals, news agency DPA reported on Monday.

The company, one of the world's best-known gunmakers, will in future only sell to countries that are democratic and free from corruption and that are members of NATO or NATO members' partners, DPA said, citing company sources.

It said this change in strategy would rule out deals with countries such as Saudi Arabia, Mexico, Brazil, India or even NATO member Turkey.

Heckler & Koch did not respond to requests for comment.

Its HK416 assault rifle is said to have been used to kill Osama bin Laden and its G36 rifle is standard issue for armies across the globe.

However, German restrictions on arms exports to the Middle East have weighed on its business, contributing to a 90 percent collapse in operating earnings last year.

The company sued the German government last year for failing to approve a deal to supply Saudi Arabia with parts needed to make its G36 assault rifle.

The deal had been approved in 2008 despite concerns about human rights abuses in the Gulf kingdom, but the German government changed its approach on arms exports two years ago.

German Economy Minister Sigmar Gabriel has sought to curb sales of tanks and small arms in particular since taking office late in 2013, arguing that guns such as assault rifles were the weapons of choice in civil wars all over the world.

Selling weapons is highly sensitive in Germany due to the country's World War Two history. It is the world's fifth- biggest exporter of major arms, according to the SIPRI research institute, and the industry employs about 80,000 people.

Heckler & Koch, which listed some of its shares on Euronext via a private placement last year, also came under pressure last year when some of its former employees were charged with breaching laws on trade and weapons of war by selling arms destined for four Mexican states.

But our Forces are waiting for MCIWS... And Ghatak & Excalibur are being used as stop gap.....

So why do we need another tender for assault rifles....

Can anyone please explain

well if I still remember they raised the question on pistol used by chatisgarh,jharkhand police special force in naxal operations for human right violation. The recent assault rifle tender is for 7.62 NATO. with a tender clause that the delivery should be completed within 36 months of signing of contract.

MCIWS even though is supposed to be multi-calibre, full scale production cannot start before 2018, assuming IA clears trials this fiscal.

Reason for a different weapon system could be for two reasons:
1) Change in doctrine from "shoot to injure" to "Shoot to kill".
2) As with every other indigenous defence product, this new tender is stop gap arrangement till MCIWS production starts.

They have been testing MCIWS for last 8 Years and still going strong ... though I would love to see an Indian Made Gun in the hands of out Soldiers (not at the cost of Quality as their Lives matter the Most and they Must get the best) . But It seems they have taken this Decision to cut through Red tape and provide the best to IA

No where in the link you posted it is mentioned that AK-Alpha is going to be with IA. IA had already made up its mind as of now for Excalibur and MCIWS.

So apparently the Porki's have signed a deal to mass manufacture CZ Bren 2 in country and this will be their new standard rifle.

All this while our Babudom has floated and cancelled god only knows how many tenders

It also weighs 6.3 kg. You won't find many soldiers who would like to lug this around.

Every single contender so far has been around 3-3.5 kg for 5.56 and are considerably better.

Don't be so over excited. First look at what IA wants and then look at what you are saying. IA wants an Assault Rifle. They don't just want a converted LMG. How much weight reduction you think removing the bipod would result? Hardly 500 gm. Still with a loaded magazine, it would weight 6kg plus. Why? Because it has been designed to support sustained heavy rate of fire. If you know INSAS family, the LMG has been designed to fire only in Auto and Semi auto mode. Now to sustain this volume of fire you need a much more strong and rigid firing chamber and barrel, which result in increment of overall weight.
Along with that a 30 round magazine weights another 500 gm. Why you think designers came up with 20 round magazine instead for AR version? It has been done as per requirement of user as weight is the most important factor in any AR unlike LMG or SR.
Longer barrel sure does mean better accuracy at greater distance, but a effective firing range of 300 metre is good enough for any AR. INSAS 1B1 does have a effective firing range of 500 mtrs. EXCALIBUR does have an effective range of 400mtrs. This range in itself is good enough for these models.
Moreover inducting EXCALIBUR would not pose any problem on spare or logistic part, as it is just an advanced version of INSAS family with much less weight (4 kg with magazine).
