Re: India goes shopping for a new assault rifle

Never seen any other bullpup besides TAR-21 in mass ..

Wikipedia says it is used by the IA. Dont know if its true? @Kunal, @Ray, @sayareakd any ideas? Also is it a reliable weapon? Most AR-15 style rifles are not so reliable in India !

CRPF deployed in Red zones will get AK-47s

CRPF deployed in Red zones will get AK-47s

Now CRPF is also ditching desi mal .... ?? There has to be reason as explained in the article..

What is interesting is the number of AKs per battalion - it means they do not visualise the entire battalion to be in operation at one time - so far the effective strength of CRPF battalion in valley and in Naxal areas at one time is only 217 that is two companies - that is not very satisfactory affair.

" The existing strength of AK-47 guns in a J&K battalion currently is 217. It is going to be doubled to 435. For the Naxal theatre, the AK-47 strength in a battalion will go up from 217 to 869. The sanction for provision of AK-47 to a battalion of the elite Combat Battalion for Resolute Action (CoBRA) has been increased from 180 to 468 by phasing out the 108 INSAS and 360 SLRs per battalion. A CoBRA battalion will now have 648 AK-47s and 90 Light Automatic Rifles/Fusil Automatic Leger (semi-automatic rifles). As many as 60 battalions (60,000 personnel) of the CRPF are deployed in J&K and 77 battalions are deployed in the Naxal theatre. "

rightly said..

OFB weapons do not meet the tactical requirement of the forces ... that is what every one has been saying ... this what the "jhagra" is !!

I hope you didn't missed this posted by me few pages ago ..

There cannot be design changes in these firearms, Hence they cannot pass same fate for Mufti-cal rifle as they themselves are same firearms ..

All Foreign Assault Rifle under trial failed under Indian conditions.

Well, if it has "Cold arrest" then it needs to be thrown off for Indian conditions.
If one pumps in five bullets into a terrorist jehadi and he survives in the bush to kill the soldier, it is no good.
If it can not be held in hand after firing three magazines as it becomes hot, it is no good.
If the magazine cracks at the first fall, it is no good.
If the trigger guard bends with the mere pressure of fingers, it is a toy and not a gun !!
If the gun has no sight, under barrel launcher and capability to fire grenades, it is not infantry weapon !

I have operated extensively not only in CI Area as also in Kargil to include the War, but apart from some cases of 'cold arrest" in Kargil, the remainder complaints seem to be motivated.
