For Members Who asked about AK-12.. New Kalashnikov Has 'Range of Defects' - Test Agency
New Kalashnikov Has 'Range of Defects' - Test Agency | Defense | RIA Novosti
Well, Ak 12 is brand new only designed in 2010 and in production from 2012, so it has problem for sure, they will be fixed, did not early INSAS rifles have problems? Mechanical Break down or spraying oil? They are fixed, so it will also fixed.

During these initial tests, the AK-12 was found to have a "range of defects." The specific problems were not revealed, as they were considered "the developer's confidential information." Izhmash reported that the faults were fixable, and that the trials precisely highlighted weaknesses in the design for changes to be incorporated.[8] Preliminary tests of the AK-12 were completed on November 30, 2012. Izhmash is now working to fix problems with the rifle that occurred during the trials.

Starting 2014, several basic weapons used by the 350-odd infantry battalions are likely to be replaced by a new, the assault rifle, the carbine, the light machine gun (LMG), the sniper rifle - essentials in an infantry battalion - all are set to be replaced over the next five years.

To begin with, the current mix of 7.62 rifle and the 5.56 INSAS rifle used by some battalions is likely to be replaced by a new double barrel rifle complete with a conversion kit which will enable the troops to make dual use.
In the first phase, 120-odd battalions deployed in CI-CT role under Northern and Eastern Command will get these rifles by mid-2014. In phase II, transfer of technology will be ensured and the production will then be taken up by India's Ordnance Factory Board (OFB).Well-known gun brands like Colt and Beretta are among five or six companies competing for the big tender of 60,000 assault rifles estimated to cost Rs. 5,000 crore at current prices. According to Army Headquarters, field trials are currently on and are expected to go on till mid-2013 before a winner emerges.
The current version of the LMGs - 45 in each battalion - are of 5.56 mm bore and are bulky at 6.23 kg. The Army plans to replace them with much lighter and more lethal ones with longer range and 7.62x51 mm bore. The general staff qualitative requirements (GSQR) for the new LMGs are being worked out currently, according to informed sources in the Army HQ.
The other big procurement on the anvil is the induction of the new generation carbine. India has plans to procure over 43,000 carbines at a cost of over Rs. 3,200 crore. Each infantry battalion currently holds an inventory of about 230 carbines. While trials are on, the first induction of the newer generation of carbines is likely to take place in 2014.

Logistics is an important aspect of war.

We must work towards commonality towards weapons systems - the knock down add on mode.

It will reduce the burden on inventory and hence stocking and logistic overloads, as also assist in a lean maintainability profile.

@Kunal I just dont get one thing, we had TOT for FNFal we used it for a long time but there was no followup improvement or upgrades done , instead it was replaced with INSAS. Then we used it for close to 15 years and as OFB whines that they cant make any changes to it as they have to abide by Army's GSQR. Now a range of new weapons are being bought with s***load of money and no1 seams to care. Personally thinking I think DEF Min should stop it and ask OFB to partner H&K or SIG or any other company with an Indian private sector parner to improve the existing weapon.

Like british did for there rifle

INSAS is the best of SLR, AKM and Captured H&K G3, SLR are still in used by Police forces, New SLR is improved with tech from INSAS like the thermoset furniture instead of Wooden, This makes SLR lighter..

Wonder why no one from Gov / Prvt willing to Upgrade existing INSAS either, This whole thing is scam from beginning, I hope it falls..

My thoughts exactly.

Also, dual caliber rounds of 5.56mm and 7.62mm from same weapon - IA requirement - seems strange.

No one seems serious in fielding such a weapon. Even no. of development prototypes are limited.

Looks like this IA requirement for "same weapon with interchangeable caliber round" is going to result in another big goof up.(for want of a better word)

Americans and Germans seem content with separate caliber weapons, and rest of world is following their lead.

Both these countries also did not field bullpup designs into their armies in large nos, yet their assault rifles like M-4 and G36 met with good export success. China, Britain and France with bull pups have not much exports. I predict these 3 countries will soon change over back to conventional design like US and Germany.

I don't think we can compare german or us army with IA ; as we use 7.62x39 for CT ops while Nato armys no longer use 7.62x52 for assault rifles they use it for mostly DMRs so there's nothing wrong in asking for a multicalibre rifle but it should be home grown not imported

Which nation's armed forces have adopted multi-calibre rifles as a standard issue or on a wide scale, so far ?

@kushalappa

Let me put some light here, IA use FAL, INSAS, AK, all three rifle use different spare parts and different ammo and there is a huge logistic Chain with it, Most of the time Solider at front-lines lack Spare of INSAS and ammo for AK ( Cannot use tango ammo as they are booby traped )..

So, to minimize the logistic chain people came with the idea that a single platform should support many caliber rounds this will reduce the spare logistic, Which we are suffering from using three different rifle at one place, Plan came out that a single Rifle should have minimum changes and should accept different rounds..

But now this Idea is outdated as new generation 5.56mm are more lethal than 7.62x39mm, Today IA using 64gr 5.56mm which are design to kill not wound..

@shafiq alam

IMHO, we don't need multi-cal Rifle, As new generation 5.56mm are lethal enough and can be used on same rifle without any change to the Rifle & Yes it can be used on INSAS without any changes, Some Details >>

[Mk 262 77-grain 5.56mm ammunition

Test of the 5.56mm NATO MK 262 Mod 1 77 gr OTM from Black Hills. The MK262 Mod 1 is topped by a Sierra MatchKing bullet, and is an active-duty military cartridge. Test shot at 100 yards using clear gel from ClearBallistics.com. Video includes review of the cartridge, test shot, and some close-up views of the clear block.
The Mk 262 is a match quality round manufactured by Black Hills Ammunition made originally for the Special Purpose Rifle (SPR). It uses a 77-grain (5.0 g) Sierra MatchKing bullet that is more effective at longer ranges than the standard issue M855 round.

Two versions of the round have been procured to date. Initial production runs, designated Mark 262 Mod 0, lacked a cannelure. Subsequent production, designated Mk 262 Mod 1, added a cannelure to the bullet for effective crimping.

According to US DoD sources, the Mk 262 round is capable of making kills at 700 meters. Ballistics tests found that the round caused "consistent initial yaw in soft tissue" at more than 300 meters. Apparently it is superior to the standard M855 round when fired from an M4 or M16 rifle. It evidently possesses superior stopping power, and can allow for engagements to be extended to up to 700 meters when fired from an 18 inch barrel. It appears that this round can drastically improve the performance of any AR15 platform weapon chambered to .223/5.56 mm. Superior accuracy, wounding capacity, stopping power and range power has made this the preferred round of many Special Forces operators..

India to put assault rifle contenders through winter trials

The Indian Army is expected to begin long-delayed high-altitude winter trials of five 5.56x45 mm assault rifles in northern Kashmir's Leh region.

The army is choosing from>>

Italy's Beretta ARX160;
the Czech Republic's Czeca CZ 805 BREN;
Israel Weapon Industries' ACE 1 - a variant of its ACE rifle
the SIG Sauer SG551 and what Colt calls the
Colt Combat Rifle - a variant of the M16A1 designed for the Indian requirement.

After the winter trials they will undergo summer trials in 2014 at Pokhran in the Rajasthan desert.

Kunal sir, cant they ask for 10 rifles from all the contenders fire them at trials then seal and lock them up under supervision of all and then unlock and de-seal and start next round on the same rifle at next trial. At least we should know that same rifle would survive in all the Indian conditions. That is the whole idea of trial. One rifle for all Indian conditions.

It appears from the above different rifles would be used in different conditions or something like that.

Beretta unveils ARX160A3 Assault rifle and GLX 160 at DSEI 2013.---Army Recognition

At DSEI 2013, Beretta has developed the next generation of small arms with the ARX160 and GLX 160 (Grenade Launcher) are closely integrated and developed in conjunction with the Future Soldier programme of the Italian Army to cater to all requirements of the modern soldier.

The ARX160 A3 can be configured in numerous variants depending on operational requirements with minimum change of parts. The ARX is capable of single shot and fully automatic fire. The weapon was NATO qualified in 2010, after undergoing stringent testing in adverse conditions and various operational scenarios and is the only in-production and in-service multi-calibre weapon (with 3 calibres) available in the market. The upper and lower receiver are made of high impact reinforced polymer and the barrel from specialised steel made to Beretta specification and is nickel-chromium plated with different rifling pitch in accordance to the caliber to provide unmatched precision and reliability.

The weapon is fully ambidextrous with seamless transition from right to left hand users and vice versa with all controls including fire selector and magazine release available on both sides. Cocking handle and ejection side can also be reversed within seconds in the field based on requirements and allowing for compatibility with state-of-the-art technologies such as corner-shot. Weapon is equipped with mil standard 1913 Picatinny rails on all sides to allow for 100% compatibility with any available sights or accessories. In addition, the weapon is virtually lubricant free which is a huge advantage when operating in sandy/desert conditions. The weapon is extremely light weight; approximately 3 kg without accessories in standard configuration.

The GLX 160 Grenade Launcher is the lightest in the world at less than 1 kg and is available as UBGL, mounted on bottom Picatinny rail within a matter of seconds as well as in stand-alone configuration. The GLX has an effective range of 400m and can be equipped with latest Fire Control Systems (FCS).

Beretta ARX-160 A3 introduced at DSEi 2013! - Pro Zone - Pro-zone - News - all4shooters.com

Infantry Automatic Rifle configuration with 20 inch barrel

Assault rifle configuration with 16 inch barrel

Carbine configuration with 12 inch barrel and grenade launcher

The ARX-160 A3 is one of the most versatile, highly modular assault rifles available on the global market today

Every two years, the London DSEi - Defense & Security Event brings the most important representants of the industry, of the professional world and of the specialized press at the ExCeL in London to get up to date with the newest products concerning military armaments and technologies, Police and homeland security solutions, innovations and techniques. This year, light appears to brightly shining on the BDT - Beretta Defense Technologies stand.

The Military/LE/Tactical/Professional products branch of the Italian-based Beretta Holding launched the newest incarnation of the ARX-160 modular assault weapon system, first conceived for the Italian Army as a part of the Soldato Futuro (Future Soldier) program, NATO-codified in 2010 and sold by Beretta to professional operators worldwide. This new version of the platform, dubbed ARX-160 A3, is the latest step in the evolution of a weapon that is currently phasing out the issued Beretta 70/90 weapon system within the Italian Armed Forces and has been sold to frontline units and Special Forces in Albania, Egypt, Kazakhstan, Mexico and Turkmenistan − Countries that have been fighting internal wars against armed insurgency, organized crime, terrorists and drug cartels for years now.

The Italian assault rifle that's gaining increasing worldwide praise and acceptance within professionals tasked with upholding global peace, public order and national security is built upon a full synthetic chassis, made out of high-impact polymer blended with a number of strenghtening materials, all classified so far. The upper receiver hosts most of the moving parts and the telescopic-sidefolding stock, while the lower receiver hosts the pistol grip, the trigger pack, the magazine well and all ambidextrous fire controls. The ARX-160 platform is a short-stroke piston-driven weapon, featuring a gas impingment system installed directly over the barrel − which can be quickly changed by the operator in a matter of seconds, right on the field, with the gun being unloaded, with the magazine out and the bolt open. Barrels are lightweight and manufactured out of special steel by Beretta itself; this means that operators can carry spare barrels in their kits and be ready to convert their ARX-160 rifles from standard assault weapons to CQB/PDW-type carbines for close combat and forced entry operations in a matter of moments. The new ARX-160 A3 now comes available with three different barrel lenghts rather than just two, making it even more versatile.

The cocking handle and spent cases ejection on the Beretta ARX-160 assault rifle can be converted from left-hand to right-hand operation, once again on the field by the user, without tools and in seconds; furthermore, the ARX-160 A3 features a bolt head that will remain compatible with all assault rifle calibers whose case doesn't exceed 45mm in lenght; this means that magazine and barrel change is all it takes to shift the ARX-160 A3 from the native 5.56x45mm NATO caliber to the Remington 6.8x43mm Special Purposes Cartridge; by changing both the barrel and the lower receiver, the ARX-160 A3 can also be converted to chamber and fire 7.62x39mm M43 caliber rounds, and to feed through AK-47/AKM-style magazines. The ARX-160 A3 features MagPul foldable iron sights, a top MIL-STD-1913 "Picatinny" rail for optics, two side rails for tactical accessories, and a fourth, shorter rail protected by a polymer shell under the handguard that acts as a fast attach-detach point for the single-shot, reloadable, multipurpose GLX-160 A1 40x46mm SR grenade launcher, which may also be used as a stand-alone weapon via a proprietary stock system.

The Beretta ARX-160 A3 assault rifle is yet another step forward in the evolution of the ARX-160 weapon system: more variants are planned for the near future, including high-caliber and pistol-caliber versions, as well as two semi-automatic variants in .223 Remington and .22 Long Rifle for civilian sporting purposes, basic marksmanship training and Police purposes. It's also a living evidence of how the Italian arms industry can still provide the cutting edge, state-of-the-art alternatives when it comes to professional, military or Police armaments, accessories and equipments for international peacekeeping operations, counter-terrorism, public safety and homeland security.

More interesting new products are on stand at the Beretta Defense Technologies booth, including a new line of SAKO ammunition for long-range tactical rifles and the latest laser products from Burris Optics − yet another Beretta Holding company.
