Blind-friendly Rs100 banknote issued
Nepal's currency notes printed by Chinese company for 1st time

KATHMANDU, June 17 (Xinhua) -- Nepal's currency notes have been printed by a Chinese company for the first time, a Nepalese central bank official said on Friday.

The Chinese state-owned company, China Banknote Printing and Minting Corporation (CBPM), has printed Nepal's new 100-rupee notes which have been brought into circulation from June 12.

"Although we have had currency coins minted in China in the past, it is the first time that any Chinese company printed our currency notes," Chintamani Siwakoti, deputy governor at Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB), the central bank of Nepal, told Xinhua.

The Chinese company got a contract of printing 210 million pieces of Rs100 denominated notes. "We have got delivery of 30 million pieces of notes so far," said Siwakoti. "Our team is departing on Sunday to receive another lot of notes with quantity of 30 million pieces."

Due to the limited storage capacity of Nepal's central bank, it takes delivery of currency notes in different installments and it usually takes around three to six months for complete delivery, according to NRB officials.

"The new notes printed in China have higher quality compared to old ones and are brighter too," said Siwakoti. It was also less costly for Nepal's central bank to print notes in China with additional features, compared to the cost of printing of the same denominated notes in another country in 2012, the official said.

China, Nepal connected with optical fiber for first time

KATHMANDU, June 11 (Xinhua)-- China and Nepal are now connected with optical fiber network for the first time through the Geelong(Keyrong)-Rasuwgadhi border point, which has ended Nepal's sole dependence on India for connecting the Himalayan country with global telecom service.

State-owned Nepal Telecom (NT) announced Saturday that its optical fiber network has been connected with that of China Telecom Corporation Limited.

"After establishing connection, we conducted technical test about two weeks ago," Dilliram Adhikari, joint spokesperson of NT told Xinhua.

He said that the NT would start commercial use of connected fiber very soon.

The telecom giant announced last month that it had completed laying the optical fiber to the Rasuwagadhi border point and now fibers of the two countries have been connected.

The NT laid the optical fiber to Rasuwagadhi from capital Kathmandu via Galchhi of Dhading District and Dhunche of Rasuwa District, paving the way for interconnection with Chinese fiber network.

According to Adhikari, Nepal now can be directly linked with Hong Kong Data Center, which is one of the two biggest global date centers in Asia, through the Chinese mainland.

"The use of the Chinese route to connect with Hong Kong Data Center will help enhancing quality of internet services in Nepal because of shorter distance," said Adhikari.

In order to use the interconnection of optical fiber between the two countries, the NT has already delivered necessary equipment to Rasuwagadhi.

"They are now being transferred to Timure, about one and half kilometer inward Nepal, considering the risk of landslide in Rasuwagadhi ahead of the monsoon season," said Adhikari.

Following the connection with Chinese optical fiber, Nepal are also able to purchase internet bandwith with Chinese companies. Currently, Nepalese internet service providers have been purchasing bandwith with companies from India and other countries.

"This will create a competitive environment for purchasing internet services which could reduce cost of internet service here," said Adhikari.

The NT initially planned to connect its optical fiber with China through Tatopani-Zhangmu(Khasa) border point, and the optical fiber was being laid on both sides of border. However, the earthquake last year damaged the fibers laid on both sides, according to NT officials.

Given the fragile geographical condition of the area, the Chinese side asked NT for exploring an alternative route for fiber connectivity. "Then we decided to connect through Rasuwagadhi," said Adhikari.

Meanwhile, the NT said it has signed initial memorandum of understanding with China Unicom, another Chinese telecom operator, for further cross-border optical fiber connectivity.

Nepal and China had agreed to enhance connectivity during Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli's official visit to China from March 20 to 27.

Dozens of trucks set off from the Tibetan border port of Gyirong for Kathmandu, 860 kilometres away, said a report.

This is the biggest goods movement between the two countries since 2005 when China built what it calls the Friendship Highway to link towns on two sides. (Photo: File)

New cargo service links Tibet, Nepal to boost trade

Dozens of trucks carrying 19 million yuan (2.8 million U.S. dollars) worth of goods left the border port of Gyirong in Tibet after customs clearance on Friday, continuing the journey to their destination in Nepal.

The new rail and road cargo service, linking Guangdong, Tibet and Nepal, aims to boost trade with the South Asian neighbor as China pushes forward its Belt and Road Initiative.

A train carrying eight carriages and 14 boxcars full of products, including shoes, clothes, hats, furniture, appliances, electronics and building materials, covered the 5,200-km distance between Guangzhou, capital of Guangdong Province, and Xigaze in Tibet.

The trucks are responsible for the remaining 870 km of the journey, carrying goods to Gyirong and then to the final stop in Kathmandu, Nepal's capital.

"The trip between Guangzhou and Gyirong takes about five to six days, much shorter than the 20 days for sea transport," said Yao Yanfeng, general manager of the freight carrier Tibet Tianzhi Import and Export Co. Ltd. "The time could be cut further to 3.7 days in the future."

Yao said his company is providing relatively quick delivery service and, despite higher costs, it can meet demand for time-sensitive clients.

"In the slower winter season, the train and trucks will make a round trip every one or two weeks," said Yao. "In the busy season next year, there will be two to three per week and, eventually, we're aiming for four to five trips per week."

"Nepal needs Chinese goods," said Liu Denghui of Adam Refrigeration Equipment Co. Ltd. in Shenzhen upon hearing about the new trade route.

NEW TRADE PASSAGE

In May, China opened a rail and road cargo service between Lanzhou in northwest China and Kathmandu. The new service starting from Guangzhou serves as an important trade passage between the two neighboring countries.

Guangdong and neighboring regions, known as China's manufacturing hubs, are a major source of imports for South Asia, including Nepal.

The trade passage, in line with market demand in the medium and long term, could help boost economic cooperation between Guangdong, Tibet and South Asia, officials said.

Luomei, assistant chairwoman of Tibet autonomous regional government, said with efficient trade transportation, the freight service could help relocate more businesses along the passage, bringing growth momentum and industrial transformation to the plateau region.

Gobinda Bahadur Karki, consul general of Nepal in Lhasa, said the freight service will help boost Nepal's economic growth as well as bilateral trade.

MORE INFRASTRUCTURE

To further facilitate trade, China is planning to build a railway between Xigaze and Gyirong to shorten the trip.

Yang Guoliang, an official with the Tibet Autonomous Regional Department of Commerce, said Tibet will build and reopen more border ports to expand the trade passage to South Asia.

The trade passage is a national strategy linking China's economic heartland with South Asia, said Yang.

It's true most trucks and police vehicles running in Nepal are Mahindra or Tata, often colorfully decorated with perhaps Hindu deities on front windows.

But things are changing bit by bit for Indian businesses which had unfettered access to the Nepali market.

Nepal to hold military exercise with China
NEW DELHI: DECEMBER 22, 2016 02:10 IST
In this August 16, 2016 photo, Nepal Premier’s special envoy Krishna Bahadur Mahara shakes hands with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi as he arrives for a meeting at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on in Beijing.

Beginning a new level of bilateral military engagement, Nepal will hold its first ever joint military exercise with China on February 10, senior military officials have told Nepali media.

The focus of the military exercise, named Pratikar-1, will be on training Nepali forces in dealing with hostage scenarios involving international terror groups.

Nepal’s Chief of Army Staff General Rajendra Chhetri visited Beijing in March when both sides had resolved to strengthen military ties. Nepal has conducted exercises with India earlier.

Unconventional move

Analysts say that though the military drill with China does not violate the 1950 India-Nepal treaty of peace and friendship, it does appear unconventional.

“Nepal can conduct military exercises with other countries without violating the agreement with India, but the upcoming exercise with China is certainly unconventional and alarming as China’s definition of terrorism covers Tibetan agitators,” said Prof. S.D. Muni, a distinguished fellow at New Delhi-based Institute for Defence Studies and Analyses. He believes that China is planning the military move to targeting the Tibetans.

Reports suggested that the exercise will firm up Kathmandu’s preparedness to deal with hostage situations like the one that caused large number of deaths in Dhaka’s Holey Artisan bakery in July.

Nepal-China JV Himalaya to link Yangon, KL

Jan 18, 2017- Himalaya Airlines plans to extend its wings to Myanmar and Malaysia by the second week of February after getting another brand new Airbus 320. The carrier expects to induct the second jet into its fleet by January-end.

The Nepal-China joint venture airline will be flying twice weekly to Yangon, the capital of Myanmar, from February 24. The fare for the Kathmandu-Yangon-Kathmandu flight starts from Rs29,600 and the fare on the Yangon-Kathmandu-Yangon flight starts from $320.

Nepal signed an air service agreement with Myanmar in April 2006. Previously, Union of Burma Airways used to operate flights between Yangon and Kathmandu.

According to government statistics, Myanmar is among the top seven tourist source markets for Nepal. Last year, Nepal received 25,769 tourists from Myanmar, with a majority of them entering the country overland. Among them, 15,284 visited Lumbini, the birthplace of the Buddha.

Likewise, Himalaya has announced the commencement of five weekly flights on the Kathmandu-Kuala Lumpur sector on February 10. With the entry of Himalaya, the route will be served directly by five carriers. Air Asia X, Malaysia Airlines, Malindo Air and Nepal Airlines currently fly between Kathmandu and Kuala Lumpur. The price of a round-trip ticket on the flight starts at Rs25,375, according to Himalaya. It has appointed Carnival Travel and My Golden Lion Aviation as its General Sales Agents (GSA) for Malaysia and Myanmar respectively.

“The launch of new destinations is part of Himalaya’s commitment to connect Nepal directly with Asia Pacific countries and boost tourism as well as trade opportunities,” said Vijay Shrestha, vice-president, administration of Himalaya. The carrier currently operates flights to Doha and Colombo.

Himalaya received its first Airbus A320 in March last year, and another one will be joining the fleet by January-end. The new Airbus with Nepal callsign 9N-ALV has 158 seats including eight in business class.

The airline plans to add two more aircraft by the end of this year. “We are thrilled to welcome our second aircraft which will help strengthen Nepal’s air connectivity to the international network,” said Shrestha.

The company plans to link various Asian and Middle Eastern cities initially. It expects to acquire 15 Airbus aircraft, including long-haul A330 wide body jets, to expand operations to Japan, Korea, Europe, Australia and America in the next five years.

Himalayan Infrastructure Fund Aviation Investment and Yeti World Investment hold a 51 percent stake in the company while Tibet Airlines owns the rest of the shares. According to Tribhuvan International Airport statistics, Himalaya Airlines carried 17,604 passengers in the first nine months of 2016.

1st shipment of Nepal's 1,000-rupee banknotes delivered from China
2017-01-18 15:02:09

The first shipment of Nepalese rupee banknotes printed by China has been put on the road, traveling from Nanchang, Jiangxi Province to Kathmandu.

The China Banknote Printing and Minting Corporation (CBPM) made the delivery, after beating British and French printers in a public tender last August.

The Chinese company was commissioned to print 200-million-rupee banknotes all with denomination of 1,000 rupees, the largest face-value banknotes in circulation in Nepal.

The CBPM has also received another order from Nepal's central bank, entrusting the Chinese printer to produce 260 million notes with denomination of five rupees.

Banknotes based on Chinese standards

CBPM Nanchang branch does not only produce Nepalese rupee banknotes but is also responsible for China's renminbi.

Li Zheng, a CBPM office manager, said: "We have used Chinese-made printers, plates, inks, papers and threads to print the Nepalese rupee banknotes. It's testimony to not only our techniques but also our overall capabilities."

The Nanchang note printing company said it had overcome many difficulties in manufacturing. For example, rupee and renmibi bills differ from each other greatly, especially in the serial numbers printed on the notes. The numbers are presented in the form of Arabic numerals on the renminbi, and in Nepalese numerals on rupees.

China has experience printing foreign bank bills as it previously produced 100-rupee notes, but some materials used at that time were not completely Chinese-made.

Two China-made planes formally handed over to Nepal's national flag carrier

KATHMANDU - Nepal Airlines Corporation (NAC), the national flag carrier of the Himalayan nation, on Wednesday formally received two brand new aircrafts from the Chinese supplier to add in its domestic fleet.

With addition of two new Chinese planes, one 56-seater MA60 and another Y-12e, the NAC has now majority of its planes made in China. Of the total seven planes in its domestic fleet, four are China-made while three are Canadian Twin Otters.
As per an agreement signed between the NAC and AVIC International Holding, in 2012, Nepal would acquire six Chinese aircraft, two in grants and four in loans. Of the six planes, Nepal's national flag carrier has to take delivery of two MA60 and four Y12e as per the agreement.

During the handover ceremony, Nepalese Minister Shahi made an empathic appeal to the Chinese side to arrange the English speaking pilots. "The NAC plans to bring two additional Y-12e in the very new future," said Kansakar.

Somebody has to pay. Nothing from china is free. Nepal has sufficient debt from India, which will never be paid. Chinese are different, they have no cultural affinity with Nepal, hence would not pardon debt.

Moreover this power generated will have to be sold, china is not customer because they have surplus of power and India does not want power generated from rivers upstream of India and built by Chinese. Hence the debt instead of being paid will accumulate more and more.

Nothing is free ~ u talked like u've found something new. No free meal of course as capitalism runs. It's market oriented.

Fyi China needs "greener" energy to replace coal power. And Nepal is short of electricity itself. When I visited Kathmandu they had no power around 2/3 day, and the city was shrounded in smog.

Cultural affinity? Hmmm Qatar shares far more affinity definitely with Saudi, Bahrain.... but so what now that they have cmpletely broken up all of a sudden? How much was your sweet affinity worth when India blocked fuel supply to Nepal?

Nepal doesn't take side, but just welcomes whatever helpful comes their way.

Nepal-China cross-border optical fiber link starts operation

KATHMANDU, Jan. 12 (Xinhua) -- The Nepal-China cross-border optical fiber link came into commercial operation on Friday.

Nepal's Minister for Information and Communications Mohan Bahadur Basnet inaugurated the commercial operation of the linkage established through Rauwagadhi-Kerung (Geelong Port) border point.

Two state-owned telecommunication companies from Nepal and China-Nepal Telecom (NT) and China Telecom established the linkage providing Nepal an alternative route to receive Internet services through China from major Internet hubs including Hong Kong.

The commercial operation Nepal-China network was planned last year after Nepal Telecom and China Telecom signed a commercial agreement on December 6, 2016.

Addressing the function to inaugurate the commercial operation, Basnet termed the operation of the fiber link as a milestone for the development of Internet infrastructure in Nepal.

"This link will further strengthen the long standing strong bilateral relations between the two countries," he said.

Chinese Ambassador to Nepal Yu Hong said this linkage would bring the two countries even closer and create business potentials.

The NT believes that the linkage would help enhance the reliability of the Internet service in Nepal. The NT 's Managing Director Kamini Rajbhandari said the international connectivity through multiple channels is vital for ensuring reliable, cost effective and quality services in Nepal.

Chief Representative of China Telecom Wang Yonglin said the Nepal-China cross border optical fiber link would enable Nepal to deliver Internet traffic at just 73 milliseconds to Hong Kong compared to 120 milliseconds through the sub-marine routes that Nepal has been using.

"This is the shortest route for Nepal to get Internet service," he said, adding that the route could also act as a gateway for Nepal to reach to Central Asia, Northeast Asia and the United States.

Good to see Hindu Numerals used by Nepal and the second aren't Arabic but refined Indic numerals.

Nepal may be ruined by China for sometime but eventually I am sure they will strike back to take over the holy shrine of Lord Shiva occupied by China. Until and unless we get it freed we will never rest whether we are shivbhakts from Nepal India or any part of the Earth.
