Nehru, Tagore among 'foreigners who shaped modern China'

BEIJING: Jawaharlal Nehru and Rabindranath Tagore have been chosen among 60 foreigners, who shaped modern China.

The paper released the list on Friday describing them as “60 foreigners who changed China”. It said the selection was done on the basis of an Internet poll and opinions of academicians.

Nehru and China’s then foreign minister Zhou Enlai were the main architects of the Hindi-Chini bhai-bhai concept that released a wave of brotherly feeling across the two nations before being smashed by the border tussle in 1962. Global Times did not specifically say it wants to remember the days of close friendship and forger the bitter times but this could be one of its intentions.

The paper does not explain why Tagore has been chosen among the foreign literary figures. Tagore has been widely translated in Chinese and these works are available in the major libraries in the country. But there is usually very little discussion about the immense hostility that the poet faced during his visit to Beijing in 1924.
