BJP hits back as Rahul Gandhi accuses Modi of seeking political gains in Kashmir

NEW DELHI, JULY 12:
A bitter exchange ensued on Wednesday when Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of pursuing policies that create space for terrorists in Kashmir. The BJP responded by asserting that it was Rahul’s great grandfather and India’s first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru who was “singularly responsible for the mess in Kashmir”.

The Congress has “always played the politics of blood”, said BJP spokesperson Meenakshi Lekhi, citing the 1984 anti-Sikh riots, the riots in Meerut and Maliana for maintaining that the Congress has “always played the politics of blood”.

Series of tweets
It started with a series of tweets by Rahul, who said Modi’s pursuit of short-term political gains from the BJP-PDP alliance in Jammu and Kashmir has cost the country dear and resulted in sacrifices of innocent Indians.

“Modi’s policies have created space for terrorists in Kashmir. Grave strategic blow for India,” he said. “Short-term political gain for Modi from PDP alliance has cost India massively.”

He further tweeted: “Modi’s personal gain = India’s strategic loss + sacrifice of innocent Indian blood.”

The Congress leader had yesterday termed the attack on Amarnath pilgrims as a “grave and unacceptable security lapse” and asked the Prime Minister to accept responsibility. He had also said India will never be intimidated by terrorists.

Responding to his charge that the PM is drawing political gains from the violence, Lekhi said: “I don’t know what personal benefit anyone can draw from bloodshed. But it only shows the immature mind of a person who doesn’t know the history of his own family.

“If anyone is singularly responsible for the mess that Jammu and Kashmir, it is the Nehru family. Not just in 1947, even post-1947, repeatedly, whatever happened in Kashmir, if one person can be blamed for that, it is Nehru himself.

“And post-Nehru, what the Congress did. In 1990s, the Jihadi terrorists flourished because of the Congress.”

She went on to accuse the Congress of “revelling” in riots and bloodshed. “Only perverted minds like theirs have a certain way of thinking. These are the people who presided over the 1984 riots, these are the people under whose watch violence was unleashed in Meerut and Hashimpura, and who benefited from the violence,” she added.

The Congress simultaneously held an official press conference by senior leader Abhishek Manu Singhvi, who targeted the BJP governments both in the Centre and in Jammu and Kashmir for ignoring intelligence inputs and preventing the terror attack on Amarnath pilgrims.

Multiple voices
He said the BJP is deliberately speaking in multiple voices to spread confusion so that no one talks about their “incompetence and inability to tackle terrorism”.

“We need to see their intent and the political initiative. We don’t need to see the 56-inch chest but we want to see some initiative. We have never been into politicising terror. We would be failing in our duty by not pointing out certain facts and simultaneously asking question. There is a clear attempt to speak in multiple voices to confuse people. In the last 24 hours, we saw a didactic sermon by Hansraj Ahir and Jitender Singh who said ‘The PM is personally monitoring the situation’. Then the Deputy Chief Minister of J&K Nirmal Singh said, ‘There were definitely security lapses’. Then the BJP general secretary Ram Madhav, more powerful than all these ministers, said, ‘There was no security lapse’,” said Singhvi.’

“Why is the BJP speaking in contradictory, antithetical voices? This is the same PM who would never forget to remind people about nationalism and constantly indulged in jingoism and chest-thumping.

“On 27th June, there was a clear intelligence input from SSP Anantnag that terrorists are directing their focus on Amarnath pilgrims. Why was this terror attack not prevented? If necessary, they should have put troops on buses, create a security corridor. Why was it not done?” asked the Congress spokesperson.
