Negotiations with China over border row in final stages: Antony

NEW DELHI: Negotiations over the border row with China are in the final stages, defence minister A K Antony said here on Monday.

"Everybody knows that border dispute is still unresolved, inspite of the fact that many rounds of negotiations have taken place. Of course, it (the negotiations) is in the final stage," he said on sidelines of a function on the annual day of defence accounts department (DAD).

However, he did not elaborate over the progress in these talks. The special representatives of the two countries have held 15 rounds of talks so far alternatively in New Delhi and Beijing.

He was responding to queries of reporters on the occasion of 50th anniversary of India-China war.

Underlining involvement of stakeholders in the process of finding a solution to the border dispute, he said, "The pending resolution of the border dispute (is important) to avoid major tensions in the border. It should be done through governmental set up and mechanism for border management involving Services, MEA and other stake holders".

Recently, Army Chief General Bikram Singh had also "assured" the nation that his forces are prepared to deal with any such eventuality which happened in 1962.

"I am assuring the nation that 1962 will not be repeated. That's the assurance I am giving. We will not let any enemy enter our territory. Plans are afoot on all borders," Gen Singh had said.

On a question over the long pending demand of one-rank, one-pension (OROP) by the ex-servicemen community, he said the government is sympathetic to their demands.

"It is an ongoing process. Even after financial crisis, we are taking care of their cases that means we are sympathetic, we know still there are problems. It is an ongoing process," he said.

I don't think there is anything concrete - by the way he answered the question, it seemed to me more like a general statement just to "ward off" the reporter's question by giving a general answer.

Which strategic places did India give to Pak in 1971? Pak lost entire East Pak in 1971 war. By the way that was the only one just war India fought in its entire history.

Hopefully, it will not be another Nehruvian folly.

China is desperate to cool down her 'aggressive' intent that has shown her up in the SCS.

It will have a cascading effect on Chinese diplomacy in Africa and the Middle East, where they will become wary. This will affect Chinese business interest and China is beholden to the altar of making money.

Therefore, what could be a better coup for the world to show that China is a 'mending of fence' mission and dialoguing with India!

Go read the history of the war and read about the places that were returned to Pakistan at the end of the war. Come out of your stupid little Tamil shell.

Kayal's trolling aside,
There is merit in the argument that GoI has the habit of giving away territory and signing deals without getting consent from the people, who would be affected most.Even recently they tried the same with WB, but Mamta banerjee managed to stop it.

IMO ideally giving away any Indian territory should require 3/4 parliament support and the approval from the state thats getting affected

That is true, and I completely agree. But talking about "Northern land versus Southern land" is something that should be put down immediately.

People like him live in a goldfish bowl, and every damn thing they see is coloured with the "North South" perception. And one more thing about such people - when it comes to "South", people like him have the arrogance to think they are the representatives of the "South".

What does he mean by 'final' here? Are we going to do the same mistakes as before by gifting out the land? Even if we agree to formalizing status quo, it means we will lose out our northern lands donated by pukes to chinis. I would be pretty disappointed if any outcome like this occurs.. Why don't they just tell me already what the outcome is going to be??

tick.. tock.. tick.. tock...

Damn it!! I am tired of waiting.. Just tell me already!!! :director: :timeout:

India is a benevolent country and dedicated to world peace and harmony.

We give away everything at all points of the compass without any favourite direction.

Take heart, we are a great as far as morals are concerned!

Not really! Vietnam, phillipine and others have been "aggressive" for decades, you can't blame Chinese for doing the same thing!
Except Vietnam, phillipine, how many countries are condemning China for this?

It will have a cascading effect on Chinese diplomacy in Africa and the Middle East, where they will become wary. This will affect Chinese business interest and China is beholden to the altar of making money.
You wishful thinking doesn't reflect the reality!

Therefore, what could be a better coup for the world to show that China is a 'mending of fence' mission and dialoguing with India!
Therefore your conclusion is wrong, especially considering that sino-india talk was always there for decades!

What's wrong with just agreeing with the status-quo with China? Aksai Chin is not important enough for India to go to war with China, and neither is Tawang so important to China. I fail to understand what diplomats of both countries have been negotiating for decades!

Accept the status quo and move on! It will be better for both countries!

Before asking wht's wrong with status-quo.. one should ask what was the status before status-quo.. Nehru was right for once. Taking away 40 kms and giving back 20kms doesn't make it fair. It is still called land grabbing. Everything is important from here for India as it rises up. Are we going to legitimize northern areas too? Accepting pakistan's gifting of China is a flaw in itself. Why would anyone want to chop off their access to the CAR legitimizing it?

The status before the status quo was that the border was never defined and agreed upon by both the Chinese during British times. The Chinese retreated from all the territory they gained in the NE. The only territory they kept is Aksai Chin, which is military indefensible and impossible to support logistically from the Indian side because it is a salt plain on the other side of the Himalayas. Here's an image, Indian Ladakh is on the other side of that mountain range you see!

It is impossible to defend and of no value in either strategic or economic terms. Why do we keep negotiating over it? Why not just be happy with what we have (i.e. the fertile plains of AP)?

In any negotiation, there has to be some give and take, it is unrealistic to expect that the Chinese will relinquish their claims on both Aksai Chin and AP out of their goodwill.

Even in the case of Paki occupation, if India really had the economic and military capability to capture and hold on to the Northern Areas, it would have already been tried. Access to the CAR is not as important as resolving our territorial disputes so we can focus on the economy and continue to grow and improve the lives of the common people. In fact this is probably another reason why India has never attempted to invade PoK.
