Bodies of 17 Jawans Found 24 Hours They Went Missing, Were Ambushed by 250 Naxals in Sukma

While no official statement has been made on the issue, sources in the know say 17 soldiers were missing, four were reported critical and some feared dead after the Saturday afternoon encounter.

Chhattisgarh CM Bhupesh Baghel meets an injured jawan in hospital on Sunday.

Bodies of 17 security personnel, who went missing after a major encounter in Bastar's Sukma between Naxals and state forces, were found on Sunday. Seventeen security personal were injured in the attack. A 150-strong search party combed the jungles around Chintagufa, where the encounter broke out on Saturday afternoon, to locate the missing men.

IG Bastar P Sunderraj told reporters in Bastar that a joint team of STF, DRG and CRPF's CoBRA team were ambushed by an estimated 250 strong Naxal force in Sukma's Minpa area on Saturday afternoon. "It was a joint operation of DRG, STF and CoBRA, in which more than 600 of our jawans were involved...It was a very tough encounter in which our estimate is around 250 Naxals were firing on our jawans from the other side."

He added that 5 different teams of DRG and STF came under heavy fire but despite being trapped in an ambush the teams did not lose their composure and scatter in panic, which would have resulted in a much higher casualty figure. "Our jawans gave a fitting response. The Naxals were not able to break and scatter our teams. Still we have 17 casualties and 15 jawans who are injured."

The IG added that the encounter lasted for about three hours. "Yesterday night we were able to evacuate 15 injured and today we were able to recover the bodies of 17 jawans," Sunderraj said. According to police's estimate the ambush was laid by CPI(Maoist)'s battallion number 1, their most dreaded and battle ready force headed by the infamous Naxal leader Hidma.

Officials believe some top Naxal leaders of Bastar have been hit in the operations. A CRPF contingent was sent for rescue and support once news of the encounter came in. "Arms and ammunitions of the security forces have been looted but Naxals too have taken the hit. At least four to five of their leaders were shot when the forces retaliated," a local official said.

Sources say that the Naxals are expected to have snatched 15 guns from the slain jawans - 12 AK 47 assault rifles, 1 Under Barrel Grenade Launcher (UBGL), 1 INSAS rifle and 1 Excalibur rifle. Saturday's ambush in which the DRG lost 12 men is the worst this force of local fighters, including many surrendered Naxals, has ever suffered. The remaining five jawans belonged to STF units.

Officials said a joint team of DRG, CoBRA and STF launched the operation from Chintagufa, Burkapal and Timeleada after specific input about Naxal presence in the forests near Elmagunda. The Naxals allegedly fired at the DRG when they were advancing through the Korajguda hills.

Senior police officials told News18 that the joint team of DRG and STF came under fire but repulsed the attack successfully. "But as they were returning to their camp at around 2:30 in the afternoon, they came under a heavy ambush," said a source.

The source added that the teams were sent on a combing operation after intelligence was received about a major congregation of Naxals from nearby states like Telangana being in meeting with the top brass of CPI (Maoist). "Usually we know that there is some movement of Telangana leaders in this area. But this time, we had hard intelligence that was so good that we felt compelled to act on it," the source added.

Prima facie it appears that naxals had been tipped off about the special forces coming in. Jawans entered the jungles of Kasalpad and were turning back after they didn't spot any naxal movement. It was after they left the forest in this area and reached near Koraj Dongri that Naxals ambushed them. Surviving jawans have reportedly told their seniors that they came under fire when they tried to rescue their injured colleagues.

The Saturday's encounter in Bastar is among the deadliest for the forces after the April 2017 Burkapal encounter in which 25 CRPF personnel lost their lives. The area where the encounter happened is quite close to the encounter site of 2017.

Sources in the state police's STF said they believe the latest attack was directly ordered by the new chief of CPI (Maoist) Basavaraju, which was perceptible by a marked increase in the firepower of the Naxals, which was a worrying development for the forces.

"The Naxals, we have observed over the past few encounters, have been firing on an average 2,500 rounds every encounter, which means they've been able to get their hands on new source of ammunition," said a source. "Their UBGLs (Under Barrel Grenade Launchers) have a markedly improved accuracy. It seems they have been able to indigenously improve their existing weaponry."

Police officials said a major rescue operation was launched early morning on Sunday in which three of the 17 missing soldiers were rescued. "They are getting necessary medical treatment at the moment," said a highly placed police official.

This is the first big Naxal encounter that Chhattisgarh has seen after the killing of BJP MLA Bheema Mandavi in 2019.

How did this attack unfold. Were these soldiers attacked unawares ? The bodies do not have any shoes, weaponry (one of them has a water bottle next to him) no body armour.. Does someone have the story of how the attack happened ?
Most of the Weapons, Armor etc.... were looted from their bodies.....

Chaibasa: Three Maoists were killed in an encounter with the security forces in Jharkhand's West Singhbhum district on Saturday, a senior police officer said here.

Acting on a tip-off that members of the banned CPI (Maoist) had gathered in the forest near Chirungreda village, a joint team of the CRPF and district police force rushed to the area, Superintendent of Police Indrajeet Mahata said.

The Maoists opened fire on the security forces. In the retaliatory action by the security forces, three Maoists were killed, the SP said, adding the security personnel also seized arms and ammunition from the spot.(PTI)

Maoists trying to breakout out of Chhattisgarh. Next target for them seems to be Jharkhand. CRPF and Police anticipated this and are circling and killing Naxal bitches! Curiously W. Bengal border areas report no Naxal activity but are source of these 'incursions'.

In the last few days anti insurgency operation in the West Singhbhum has been intensified following intelligence reports that suggest rebels are camping in the pockets.

The administration has increased police patrolling on the bordering areas connecting to West Bengal and has also deployed adequate number of paramilitary personnel on areas potential to rebels attack.

Meanwhile intelligence sources maintained that the naxals have once again started influencing the local residents to come to the fold of the naxalism," said a senior intelligence officer. He said the rebels are targeting areas in Sonua, Goelkera and Porahat region of West Singhbhum.

Gumla, famed for religious tourist spots such as Anjani Dham and Tanginath, had almost stayed free of Maoist activities for a year, but since November last year, sporadic activities started surfacing in the district.

COVID-19 snuffing out Maoists!

Maoists battle shortage of essentials amid 21-day Covid-19 lockdown

Maoists operating in dense forests against the state machinery are running short of ration and other essential commodities. And the 21-day nationwide lockdown is a body blow.

R Krishna Das Last Updated at April 5, 2020 18:50 IST

“Maoist rebels normally assign 10 to 15 villagers to procure items from the bazaar weekly and stock them,” says a senior official in the local intelligence wing. But the lockdown has disrupted the supply chain of the rebels — haat bazaars are closed and their aides cannot come to urban areas for procurement because of strict vigilance. Besider, villagers’ priority is to first put their house in order before stocking up for Maoists.

“The development has certainly come as a big setback for Maoists, given the timing of the lockdown,” the official says. Usually, mid-March to April is the time for storing essential commodities. It is part pre-monsoon exercise as rebels usually avoid operations and movement during the monsoon season.

Chhattisgarh police curtail counter-Maoist ops

“The anti-Maoist operations have reduced by 50% in my district. Only dedicated operations are still going on by the Special Forces and it is very difficult now to push other forces into the jungles for big operations,” said a police superintendent posted in one of the districts of Bastar requesting anonymity.

Naxals struggle as lockdown hits supply chain of essentials

Raipur, Apr 18 (PTI) The coronavirus-triggered nationwide lockdown has paralysed the supply chain of Maoists in Bastar region of Chhattisgarh, which is likely to impact their conventional warfare strategy in the coming days, police officials claimed.
As a result, the Naxals have now started snatching a significant part of the ration distributed to villagers under the Public Distribution System (PDS) in Bastar division during the ongoing crisis, the officials said.

Bastar region, spread over an area of about 40,000 sq km, is considered a stronghold of ultras and comprises seven districts of Dantewada, Bijapur, Bastar, Narayanpur, Kondagaon, Sukma and Kanker.

"As per the preliminary information, Maoists'' supply networks are facing a challenge to operate due to the restrictions imposed to prevent the spread of virus. To meet their need of essentials, Naxals are putting extra pressure on local villagers," Inspector General of Police (Bastar range) Sundarraj P told PTI.

In the past as well, the local militia cadres of the outlawed CPI (Maoist) used to take ration from villagers and ask them to cook food for their group of about 10-15 members, but the bigger formations of Naxals arrange food and essential commodities through their designated supply team, he said.

Haat bazaars or village markets held in remote areas of Bastar, which have been closed due to the lockdown, served as an ideal destination for Maoist couriers to procure ration and items of daily use. Besides, local cadres also visit town areas to arrange such things, he said.

"But the fear of being caught if they move to urban areas in the current situation, Maoist couriers are preferring to arrange these things from local villagers resulting in burden on innocent tribals, who do not dare to refuse them," he said.

Dantewada Superintendent of Police Abhishek Pallava said that security forces have been launching operations on getting inputs about Maoists looting the ration of villagers in remote areas in his district.

"We are constantly getting tip-offs that Naxals are snatching the month''s ration of villagers in Kirandul and Bhansi police station area of Dantewada," he said.

Notably, the state government has been providing two months (March and April) ration at one go free of cost to BPL cardholders across the state during the lockdown.

"Out of fear, villagers do not dare to report these incidents to police. Acting on one such input, we had launched an operation on April 16 in the forests along Dantewada- Bijapur border, during which a Naxal was killed in a gunfight," Pallava said.

Despite a complete ban on holding religious and social gatherings, Naxals have been convening meetings of villagers deep inside the jungles and taking away their ration.

This reflects Maoists'' insensitivity toward tribals in this period of crisis, he said.

Another police official posted in Bastar said, Maoists carry out annual ''tactical counter offensive campaign'' (TCOC) in summer, during which they intensify their offensive against the security forces.

In the initial part of the campaign, they generally stock a huge quantity of ration and other essential items, which would help them during their three-month (March-May) long offensive.

"Scarcity of supplies could have an impact on their conventional warfare strategy in the coming days," the official added. PTI TKP NP NP
