But Navy should order a squadron of NLCA MK-1 as LIFT and a feeder platform for TEDBF.
It wont be inducted , its only a TD version unfortunately
Basic getting was it can't carry enough load from a carrier due to underpowered engine, being heavier than IAS Tejas.

Anybody knows how much weapons load Mig-29k can take off from Vikki with? All photos on the Internet seem to be in clean configuration...

For LIFT role, NLCA MK-1 is neither underpowered nor short on other individual requirements. Even in pure A2A mode it is good enough. Same when carrying 1 AShM it can go desired distance.

However it is the holistic requirement where a deck based Jet should carry BVR+ CCM+ AShM and required amount of fuel for optimum range and endurance, where it lacks. Just like Mig-29Ks. But Navy has been force feeded so they can't help much.

Mig-29k is not an optimum platform and almost a trouble maker. Hence Navy has initiated TEDBF(thanks to Confidence provided by program NLCA) to replace it. Mind you newest Mig-29Ks are barely 10 years old. Enough hints.

As per 2016 CAG report, they have defects in engines, airframes and fly-by-wire systems. Serviceability of MiG-29K & KUB reached from 15.93%-37.63% & 21.30%-47.14%; respectively, with 40 engines (62%) being rejected/withdrawn from service due to design defects.

Why the fuck would they place the follow-up order of 29 more?!!.. They have, what, 44 now?.. That's enough for two 40k-45k ton carriers.
What'll be the role of 57 additional one then? All for the 3rd carrier, or they plan on getting rid of Mig-29K? ...And TEDBF?

Will Navy order 1-2 squadrons of N-LCA? Or our condition will be similar to Chinese Navy, where they don't have enough J-15's to operate on both carriers.
Indian Navy has 43 Mig-29K( Before Mig-29K crash last year, a Mig-29K didn't land properly and got damaged).

Wiki says Navy has already ordered 8 Naval Tejas for various trials and tests.

That's the answer they just want to phase out Mig29k as soon as possible might move them to airforce or use it as shore based maritime fighter once they induct new 57 jets which now looks like TEDBF

Yes..... Their biggest concern is the single engine. Up to an extent their concerns are well placed.

NLCA is more reliable than a Mig-29K (whose serviceability had never reached 50%) & the latter is definitely more likely to crash... Unlike sky-jump, a CATOBAR would get the NLCA in air with meaningful weapons load.

Its not about reliability, its about survival chances. A twin engine fighter operating from a deck is much safer to operate in high seas then a single engine one. In case of engine failure, a single engine plane trying to land on deck is no where less then a missile approaching the carrier.

Additional 57 fighters are for INS Vishal or IAC 2. If TEDBF goes ahead, program to procure additional 57 fighters will be cancelled. Mig 29k will not be replaced by either TEDBF or additional 57 fighters. Mig 29k is STOBAR while both these fighters are CATOBAR.

Don't get it... Sea-harrier was single engined, so will be F-35. Mig-29s are twin engined but crash like there's no tomorrow. Wouldn't the overall chance of engine failure taken into account?

In case of a missile hit, twin-engined fighter have a chance to limp back.

First of all, MINDSET. During the harrier period, we haven't tasted twin engine fighters. So we operated what is there on table. Once the twin engine came, we came across the idea of operating one and look at the pros and cons.
Second, the Sea Harrier was a STOVL. So even if it was a single engine fighter, in case of a engine failure while landing, the crash effect would be different then that of a conventional fighter.
Third, CONFIDENCE on the platform. USN would show confidence on F-35C, but IN would not show the same level of confidence on it leave alone NLCA. Maybe the first and third point would go away with time, but the Second point would always there in their mindset.

I doubt NLCA will be inducted in Navy.
Imo it is supposed to be a test bed for TEDBF which will make the bulk of our carrier fleet, with Mig 29 assigned to different duties.

I mean what kind of operation is the NLCA supposed to perform with the piss poor range and Load out.

Exactly... I'm all for Tejas but not against sensibility. Navy could only use Tejas if few Mark1A are based at A&N islands.

Question: @porky_kicker @Chinmoy @indiatester
Why don't IAF Tejas get this bulge on the back like NLCA?.. Won't that make more room for extra fuel & equipments?
