From DDR article A Detailed Look At The Design Evolution Of India’s Naval-LCA Mk1 Fighter;
"NLCA Mk1 was designed keeping in mind air superiority as its primary mission along with limited air-to-ground and anti-ship strike and reconnaissance capability. Currently, it is integrated with the R-73 close combat missile (CCM), besides the Derby BVRAAM".

This thing is beautiful . I hope they make at least two squadron of it. If not for AC then for coastal defence. This can replace jaguar maritime version. Arm it with harpoon!!

If they're for coastal defence, then Tejas AF version is the better option... The carrier-capable NLCA should be atleast 1/2 a ton heavier than it.

Ya but shouldn't it withstand marine climate much better. Stronger frame and carriage means if could probably lift more payload too!

No, structural integrity isn't what limits payload, it's the thrust & wing-lift. So for the same MTOW, if the jet's empty weight increases, then it's gonna carry less load and/or fuel.

Thus if your jet isn't to operate from carrier, you don't want the naval version.

Agreed but there may be a case for making more NLCAs. INS Vikramaditya and the new INS Vikrant can hold approx 30 fixed wing planes each. Our carriers are primarily going to operate within the Arabian sea, IOR and Bay of Bengal. They are not far from Indian shores or friendly bases like Oman in the west or Singapore in the east or Australia in the south or even Diego Garcia providing logistic support which may be within ferry range of the NLCA ~ 1750 kms through which they can be rotated thus getting "fresh" fighters on board the carriers ensuring more effectiveness of the carrier strike force and operational flexibility.

Flight control engineers must been silently laughing at the corners...
There's a reason why his blog has seen a dramatic drop in readership and engagement his know it all attitude devoid of any factual basis along with making countless grand predictions that never transpired proved to be his downfall.

Picture incomplete without the following snippet..

.. IN may have a sliver of the budgetary allocation with respect to the other forces but it more than makes up with laser sharp focus.. it knows what it wants and how to get there!
