What is the current status of this project?
It’s partially operational from Varanasi to Haldia but will get fully operational after 2023 and from then the cargo movement will keep increasing terminals will keep expanding and new terminals will keep coming up with increasing traffic
Government data shows that cargo movement by IWT has increased to 72.31 mt in fiscal 2019 from 55.03 mt in fiscal 2018 with plans to push it up to 150 mt by 2025.

government has raised the target of cargo movement through coastal shipping as 230 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) by 2025 compared to 120 MTPA in the year 2018-19.
And target of 150 mt through national waterway 1 itself shows how important this waterway is going to be for India
Sometimes I think why congress didn’t develop waterways for last 70 years on the other hand China and USA made huge investments in their inland waterways today they’re transporting 45-50% of their freight using inland waterways and earning from tourism as well

I was reading somewhere that cost of developing Yamuna as waterway is 12,000 crore INR and Government has asked world bank for loan to fund this project
if we develop this waterway then Delhi NCR , Haryana , Rajasthan and Punjab can also get connected to National Waterway 1 which will bring huge benefits to this region as Delhi NCR won’t remain a landlocked region and it will be possible for heavy industries to set up plants in this region like automobile manufacturing for example
