Uncle is making a comeback, perhaps, to weaken China's clout there.

But so what?

Is Sino-Myanmar friendship even firmer than that btwn China and Pak? Or what does China lose when Pak wooes other powers? always a zero sum game?

Take it easy.

Love her, but give her space

I really admire you're permissiveness. Actually this is a slap in the face but which China cannot escape. Myanmar only made more obvious what has been known all along. That China is not "the" superpower it is asserting itself to be in Asia. All it can do now is to make face-saving gestures...maybe a military exercise with Myanmar military?

Pak and Myanmar are two different noodles for China. Pakistan is immediately important for milking the US dry in the AfPak (like the USSR). Hence, China likes to see the continuing convoluted relationship between Pakistan and the US. This is not the case in Myanmar. There is no stubborn militancy in the Myanmar neighborhood that could bleed the USA to exhaustion. More than that Myanmar is a priced territory as it has natural resources to supply China exclusively, but which is in real danger in case American companies enter Myanmar.

u still don't get my point
1) China is not (yet) a super power and not acting super. Admitting this fact helps China to position herself precisely
2) China has never "monopolize" Myanmar. Unlike what u claim - its natural resources to supply China exclusively, it's never exclusive for China. Competition is always there, with or without the US. India, for one, is in it too

So long as all the deals are in mutual good, business as usual. Myanmar also needs China to leverage Uncle. That's how the game is played. So take it easy and play on.

Maybe the CCP has not been too forthright to you and the rest of the Chinese population, it has been acting lately like it is already the preeminent Asian superpower...8)

Who win the election is irrelevant. Who ever controls the military controls the country. And we all know it wont be Su Kyi. Without the backings of the military, you wont last long. It is absurd to think that the junta will give all their powers away. We don't live in a fairytale, boys.
Perhaps it is for you. May be we should ask the general public how they view the election result. We are realistic and ready to give military more time to let go of their control in gradual steps. Just look at the condition of people they had no hope for their future.

Once they open up to rest of the world we can bring in economic development which will translate in to employment and peace in the country. We are not going their to siphon off the natural resources as China does to rest of the underdeveloped world.

I think it was regime in China who was living in an LA LA land. Now is the time for reality check. I am convinced your CCP will try behind the door to encourage discontent with in the army to prop up another Army coup de-tat in order to stop the changes in Myanmar about to take place.

Let us see how it unfolds. Over all I am satisfied to this day that changes are taking place without the violence. If I may add the day is not far off when Pakistanis who are realistic will wake up and make an about turn in their relationship with China and ignore your advise which is acting as a catalyst in framing of their foreign policy. Sooner it happens that much better for citizens of Pakistan on a long term basis.

Suu Kyi would make Burma a US puppet state like South Korea. I don't think something that extremely pro-US will be good either. While peaceful state is appreciable on our side, I think we should encourage Thein Sein who introduced massive reforms and at least brought an improvement in Burma. Guess everyone is getting weary of CCP's bullying. ASEAN must take this opportunity to further reward Burmese and encourage more reforms and opening up. We should also start stronger ties with Burma.

For decades, we were the "democracy puppies" doing NATO's work with democracy harping and pushing Burma further and further into Chinese arms. Now Burma is interested in other alternatives to friendly countries other than China. Since we Indians border them, we should take all initiative to actually encourage Burma to warm up to us. Another friendly state is only most welcome when we have Jamaati fundos in Bangladesh, Pakistan and idiotic Communists in Nepal that are against us. Burma warming up with us would be a big diplomatic victory for us.

What's more; it can become our gateway to stronger ties into Southeast Asia in future even better.

China has become powerful, but it has become scarier and unpredictable. A China which has been hell-bent at creating troubles for all it's neighbors will be rendered completely toothless in near future.

Stop acting like a superpower until u are one.
On the contrarary. China is predictable if you know the sign to looking for.
Hell bent at creating troubles for all its neighbor? You got be kidding. Every country act out of self interest. Just because you cant see the motives behind their actions, dosnt means their actions are irrational.
A person can be irrational, but a country is seldom that. The inability to see that, is your own fault.

Who are "we"? The good samaritan club? YOu gonna give them aid instead of trade? "bring economic development without shipping off the natural resources?" You think China got all the resources for free? They paid the market price. Your good samaritan club is gonna what? giving Free aid without strings attached? Dont tell me you believe in Santa too.

Otherwise I agree that we need to wait and see. I think it is too early to tell what will happend there. I, however, dont believe ppl who have wield power so long can give it away freely. Time will tell who is right here.

And China giving advice to Pakistan? Ha, that is a good one.

I my previous post the word "WE" implies to the rest of the free world. Yes, we are going to do all and plus more, bring democracy, freedom of speech, help them to develop institutions that can face the challenges of twenty-first century. What has China given to them all those years other than teach how to suppress the public seeking freedom to choose their own representatives? Market price my bloody foot. I can prove to you how you treat natives where ever you go to do business. Since you people have no shame it would be hard for you feel embarrassment for the acts committed on foreign labourer. You fire the locals to employ your own nationals such as in African countries, Guatemala mines , etc. I will find the link and let you see for yourself the true picture.

Is this why your PLA cannot let go of power? Go and check the pathetic condition of farmers in your country, whose land is seized by money hungry state officials and loot is shared among the thugs of PLA and CCP.

China giving advise to Pakistan: Why do you think they run to Beijing whenever there is tension between them and Washington. They are in the league as your PLA. Occupy the foreign land illegally and hand it over to third party, send the troops disguised as locals in to neighbouring country to create disturbances and change the demographic setup of the region. There is more to it. One of these days your country will get the taste of its own medicine as well. In the last few years you have seen the changes taking place in the countries of SEA, it is just the start more is to come.

So next time you want to give rebuttal or counter any one post do look up the facts instead of going in circles.

So far the "free world" as you call it, has giving nothing to the country. China, on the other hand has provided FDI og trade. They are tangible assets, not mere words. They provide income and jobs for the people. That is worth more than your grand promises. YOu may have a grand idea about your-self, but you dont represent the free world.

China teaching the junta how to suppress their own ppl? ROFL, right blame it all on the evil CCP. The junta was corrupted by them. They were all innocent babies before they meet the evil commies.

It is obviously you have no clue about basic economy. When you sign a contract, it is up to you how to fulfill it. If China wants to use their own ppl , they can do it. If you dont like it, then dont do business with China. Nobody is forcing you to. What makes you think that a third party like you know better than the ppl involved in the venture?

What does PLA got to do with farmers? Some times it is better to hide your ignorance then make a fool out of your self.

Occupy foreign land illegally and hand it over to third party? What land has China occupied and given away to other countries?

Send tropps disguised as locals? Where? How do you disguise Chinese as locals? Sure, the chinese can bland in among the crowds of pakistanis or africans. Do you even think before you post gabbage like that?

I dont know what kind facts you are talking about, so far you have provided none of them. Too much rupee news lately?

To settle the debate, only a simple question actually need to be asked: Why, with all the Gazillions of Chinese FDI, decades of military aid and diplomatic cover, is Myanmar still longing for the embrace of Uncle Sam?

I think you are confusing the desire to distance them selves from China with longing for the embrace of Uncle Sam.

Just ignore the corny poetic approach. The fact is even long time client state Myanmar isn't too happy about China.

How about North Korea?

China cannot give anything to any nation, when the whole Chinese economy is driven by export of cheap manufactured goods. China makes money by selling it's produces to other countries, most of the money ends up in the government coffers, making it super-rich. Finally this money is utilized in distributing so-called aids and loans, which again end up back in Chinese hands due to the terms and conditions of such grants/loans/aids.

Problems between China and Myanmar had been brewing for a long time, because of China's bullying tactics. China cultivates all pariah/isolated states in the world and extracts benefits. Myanmar refused to tread this path, and instead decided to open itself for the betterment of the country and it's people.

If you feel that China cant give "anything" to any nation. It is up to you. The trade relations and tourist volumes says otherwise. But let us ignore those minor details.

I suggest you do a bit reading about export and GDP ratio. You are lucky you are posting here, anywhere else ppl will laugh their asses off.
"the whole Chinese economy is driven by export " Ha, a good one. :thumb:

The TAZARA railroad was not free. The cost was paid in 30 years and the project was tied to strategic considerations of china. China will give something for free? In your dreams.

Interestfree loan over 30 years, that's pretty much gratis. Do yo get zero percent for your mortgage? Also China has written off much debt Africa owes to her in recent years, talking about tens of billions of dollars. When you loan money to African countries, you don't really expect getting it ever repaid.

BTW, why is all this hatred and hostility towards chinese? Remember chinese have been the main reason Maylasia is where it is today. The absence of any gratitude in your poasts is rather dissapointing.:tsk:
