The All Pakistan Muslim League (APML), as Muslim League was known in Pakistan, has had many factions and avtars ever since Jinnah's death. When Liaquat Ali Khan dismissed the Punjab Chief Minister Mamdot's ministry, he formed his own Jinnah Awami Muslim League. Mamdot was a very powerful landlord in the Punjab. People began to desert the APML and join Mamdot's party. At one point of time, Field Marshal Ayub Khan even banned APML, the party of Jinnah that created Pakistan ! Ayub Khan also became the head of his own Convention Muslim League, a splinter of the original Muslim League (this later became Pakistan Muslim League, PML).
KARACHI: The organisation for the All Pakistan Muslim League (APML), headed by General (r) Pervez Musharraf, was formally launched in Sindh on Tuesday amid queries regarding accusations against the former military president of the country.
APML's organiser Barrister Mohammad Ali Saif accompanied by former president's spokesman Rashid Qureshi, addressing a crowded press conference at the Karachi Press Club on Tuesday said the party has received a positive response in Karachi and other parts of Sindh during the last three days in the party leaders' meetings that were held in the city.
Responding to allegations against Musharraf including violation of constitution, dozens of killings at Lal Masjid and Jamia Hafsa, Benazir Bhutto and Nawab Akbar Bugti's assassination, and killings of over 40 people in Karachi on May 12, 2007, the party leader said he knew such questions would be asked as they had faced the same questions from people at different places. He added that all accusations would be answered and defended with documentary proofs at an appropriate time.
Saif remarked that everybody has the right to participate in the politics of the country.
He said that during their visit to Karachi they have held meetings with people belonging to different sections of the society including women, minorities, representatives of labourers and political parties, adding that all of them have assured of their full support.
Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf's former leader Zubair Khan, Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid's (PML-Q) Anwar Warsi and some persons from the Pakistan Qaumi Movement who joined the APML were also present on the occasion.
Responding to a question, Saif said the former president would return to the country before the next elections while Qureshi said, "He would return soon and would fix the date for his return himself," he said.
Later talking to media persons after the press conference, Qureshi said that many persons were willing to join the party. He added, "There are many names from PML-Q, including sitting Senators, MNAs and MPAs, and those who lost in the last elections."
He said the PML-Nawaz was politicising these allegations just 'to take revenge' from Musharraf. He justified the operation against Lal Masjid and Jamia Hafsa but refuted reports that women and children were also among the dead. He claimed the reported 94 graves were present in Islamabad and could be dug up to confirm if women and children were killed. He added that everybody including the media had at that time supported the operation against extremists.
On allegations of Bugti's assassination, he said that everybody knew about him and what he did to the country. He said the operation against miscreants was started with the consent of then provincial government. He repeated his claim that Bugti was not killed by the security forces but due to a blast inside the cave where the Baloch leader was hiding.
Expressing surprise over Musharraf being blamed for killing Nawab Akbar Bugti, he questioned why President Asif Ali Zardari and Chief of Army Staff General Ashfaq Pervez Kayani were not being accused of killing Taliban leader Baitullah Mahsud.
He further hoped the Muttahida Qaumi Movement and APML would support each other to achieve their objectives. staff report
