Musharraf named accused in Benazir Bhutto's assassination

PTI, Feb 7, 2011, 01.43pm IST

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan's former president Pervez Musharraf was today named as an accused in an interim chargesheet filed by prosecutors in an anti-terrorism court conducting the trial of suspects charged with involvement in assassination of ex-premier Benazir Bhutto.

Musharraf, who has been living in self-exile in Britain since early 2009, was named as an accused in the interim challan or chargesheet filed by the federal investigation agency in the anti-terrorism court in Rawalpindi, the state-tv reported.

There was no official word on the development. A report by a UN commission that probed the Bhutto assassination had blamed Musharraf for failing to take adequate steps to provide security to former premier.

Bhutto was killed by a suicide attacker in Rawalpindi in December 2007 during an election rally in Rawalpindi. Musharraf was then President of Pakistan.

The anti-terrorism court is conducting the trial of five suspects linked to the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan who have been charged with involvement in Bhutto's assassination.

While this may other may not be true, but this may be more to do with politics and musharraf announcing his intention to come back to pak. This would make things difficult for him.

I read in some other news article that the guy who ordered the hosing of the site of the assassination as declared to the investigators that the orders came from Musharraf himself. That might be reason for naming him in charge sheet.

Musharraf named as accused in Bhutto's assassination case

Pakistan's Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) has added the name of former President Pervez Musharraf to the list of accused in the Benazir Bhutto assassination case.

Musharraf's name was revealed in a chargesheet filed by the FIA in a Rawalpindi anti-terrorism court.

According to the Dawn, the court accepted the chargesheet after the testimony of former Rawalpindi City Police Officer (CPO) Saud Aziz and Superintendent of Police (SP) Khurram Shahzad.

The chief prosecutor has reportedly said that the phone records confirm contact between Musharraf and Aziz.

He also said that the former President had been giving orders to the CPO and SP.

Earlier, Aziz had claimed that the order to change Bhutto's security in-charge had been given by Musharraf.

Aziz had also stated that the scene of the assassination was immediately washed on Musharraf's orders.

Bhutto had sustained injuries in a terrorist attack outside Liaquat Bagh, when she was returning after addressing a public meeting during her election campaign on December 27, 2007.

She was rushed to hospital where she succumbed to injuries. (ANI)

I too think this is political. But if it is it means Pakistani politics has taken a new, vicious turn.

Shoe thrown at Mr."Musharraf":

Pakistan News: A man hurled a shoe towards former president Gen. (Retd.) Pervez Musharraf when the latter was addressing a gathering here on Sunday.

The shoe fell in the front rows and failed to reach the stage. On this security men present there sprung to action and took the man out of the place.

The man, when being taken out, chanted slogans in favour of Dr. Afia Siddiqui, who is presently in US detention.

The shoe-hurling began with an Iraqi journalist who threw two shoes at former US president George Bush during his farewell visit to Iraq.

This started a trend which saw tossing of shoes on different leaders including Indian Home Minister P. Chidambaram, President Asif Ali Zardari and Chinese premier Wen Jiabao. However, in all these cases no shoe reached the target.
