The world's fastest anti-ship cruise missile will bolster the country's 'peaceful' defense policies.
Vietnam's government has confirmed it has taken delivery of a batch of short-range ramjet supersonic cruise missiles from India.

Foreign ministry spokeswoman Le Thi Thu Hang said at a press briefing on Thursday that Vietnam is developing defense cooperation with India to allow the country to pursue its defense policies.

“The arms purchase is in line with Vietnam’s peaceful national defense policies aimed at protecting the country,” Hang said.

She said the strategic comprehensive partnership between Vietnam and India is growing in various areas and contributing to peace, stability and development in the region and the world.

The BrahMos missile was developed by Russia's NPO Mashinostroeyenia and India’s Defense Research and Development Organization. It is the world’s fastest anti-ship cruise missile in operation, traveling at speeds of 3,400-3,700 kilometers per hour.

The three-ton missiles can be launched from submarines, ships, aircraft or land.

India has already supplied patrol vessels to Vietnam and has been providing military training, but the missiles are the first arms trade deal between the two countries.

Details of the value of the deal have not been revealed.

Vietnam is building up its military amid tensions in the disputed East Sea, which is known internationally as the South China Sea. The country has also ordered six Kilo-class diesel-electric submarines from Russia in a deal worth $2 billion. The latest arrived last January.

IDRW saying missiles not sold to Vietnam.

http://idrw.org/brahmos-not-sold-to-vietnam-india/

Raveesh Kumar official spokesperson of the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) in India has clarified that India has not supplied supersonic Brahmos Cruise missiles to Vietnam and spokesperson for Vietnam’s External Affairs also has clarified he had not confirmed the sale and just talked about defence and strategic relations with India and was misquoted by Vietnamese media . Earlier this year India and Vietnam had held talks on the sale of indigenously developed surface-to-air Akash missile and supersonic Brahmos missile to Vietnam but the sale is yet to be concluded. Vietnam plans to manufacture Akash MK1 Surface to Air Missile locally with help of Transfer of Technology from India, While India plans to start development of improved Akash 1S and Akash NG (Next Generation ) surface-to-air Missile Systems. Brahmos Mach 3 Supersonic cruise which India has developed with Russia will not involve Transfer of Technology to Vietnam and will come with capped range of 290km even though India and Russia already have tested BrahMos with a range up to 450 km recently and are now planning to develop enhanced 800 range variant by 2019. Vietnam has shown interest in procurement of Coastal BrahMos Missile system which is Truck based Anti-Ship Cruise Missile to protect its Coastline.

I couldn't believe I that will be able to see this day. I remember many discussion here at DFI when we would talk about this with great skepticism seeing a non-assertive government.

India Seals Deal With China’s Arch-Rival Vietnam For Supply Of BrahMos Missiles: Report

The Indian Navy successfully fired the BrahMos Land Attack Supersonic Cruise Missile from a ship. (Twitter)

Even as India and China continue to reinforce their positions in Doklam militarily, New Delhi and Hanoi have reportedly struck a deal for the supply of Indo-Russian BrahMos supersonic anti-ship and land-attack cruise missiles to Vietnam, one of Beijing’s arch-rivals in the region, Livefist Defence has reported.

A report in VN Express, an English-language Vietnamese daily, appeared to confirm the purchase today. However, according to Livefist, the newspaper later altered its headline to play down the report. No official word has been released by the Indian government on this issue.

“The arms purchase is in line with Vietnam’s peaceful national defense policies aimed at protecting the country,” the daily had quoted Vietnam’s Foreign ministry spokeswoman Le Thi Thu Hang as saying.

Security cooperation between India and Vietnam is not a new development. The two countries have been discussing the deal for the past few years. India has already supplied patrol vessels to Vietnam and has been providing military training to the country’s submarine crews and pilots as both New Delhi and Hanoi operate equipment of Russian and Soviet origin.

India and Vietnam are also known to be in discussion for the supply of Defence Research and Development Organisation’s Akash missile systems.

Interesting development.

Brahmos can't be sold without Russian permission. Russia must have been part of discussions. How did we manage to keep trilateral contract hidden until delivery?

BTW did China know about this sale? Or did Russia keep them in dark. If this is the case
then so much for China-Russia alliance.

BrahMos missiles were co-developed by Russia's NPO Mashinostroeyenia and India's DRDO.

NEW DELHI:
HIGHLIGHTS
  1. India-China in military stand-off for over 2 months at Sikkim border
  2. Vietnam buys BrahMos missile from India, China will be displeased
  3. Missile signals Vietnam's defending its claim to disputed South China Sea

At a time when India and China are dealing with their worst border tension in decades, Vietnam has reportedly acquired the Indian BrahMos supersonic anti-ship cruise missile, widely considered one of the most advanced missiles of its type in the world.

India has not commented yet on the sale, and details are not available yet on how much it is worth or how many missile systems are involved.

Answering a specific question on the missile at a press conference held earlier today, Vietnamese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Le Thi Thu Hang said "The procurement of defence equipment by Vietnam is consistent with the policy of peace and self-defence and is the normal practice in national defence." She added that the Vietnam-India Comprehensive Strategic Partnership which includes cooperation in defence has "been making a practical contribution to peace, stability, cooperation and development in the region."

India's BrahMos missiles are considered one of the most advanced missiles of its type.

This is the first official albeit carefully-worded confirmation by Vietnam of having received the state-of-the-art missile system after years of reported talks with Delhi. The acquisition of the BrahMos will be seen by China as a defiant move by Vietnam to protect its claim to the disputed South China Sea, which Beijing claims entirely as its own.

Senior Vietnamese journalists have indicated to NDTV that the first batch of missiles arrived a few days ago.

Co-developed by a Russian manufacturer and India's Defence Research and Development Organisation or DRDO, the BrahMos can accelerate to speeds of 2.8 times the speed of sound to strike enemy ships 300 km away. In the final phase of its flight, the missile undertakes a series of extreme manoeuvres to avoid interception by surface-to-air missiles which may be fired to prevent it from hitting its target. The Indian Army has also acquired a land-attack variant of the missile featuring a dive attack capability to enable the BrahMos to strike targets in mountainous areas with pinpoint accuracy.

BrahMos missiles can undertake a series of extreme manoeuvres to avoid interception.

In April this year, the Chinese People's Liberation Army Daily said, "The deployment of BrahMos missile is bound to increase the competition and antagonism in the China-India relations and will have a negative impact on the stability of the region." The armies of both countries are in the midst of a lengthy standoff on the Doklam plateau, located over the Sikkim border. China says the region belongs to it; India and Bhutan agree it's part of the tiny Himalayan kingdom. In June, Indian soldiers crossed over to stop the Chinese army from building a road that would give it strategic access to the "Chicken's Neck" - the narrow sliver of land that connects the Northeast states with the rest of India.

Vietnam has deep concerns at Beijing's rapid conversion of shoals and tiny islands into full-fledged military bases with runways for use by military aircraft. Several countries in the region in addition to the US, Japan and India have repeatedly said China should not in any way threaten or impede the free movement of shipping in what are international waterways. In 1979, both countries fought a brief but bloody war in which there were thousands of casualties with China being unable to prevent Vietnam's involvement in neighbouring Cambodia.

India and Vietnam enjoy a very close military partnership. India has trained Vietnamese sailors in Visakhapatnam to operate Russian built 'Kilo'-Class submarines which are operated by the Navies of both countries and has supplied patrol vessels. India has also been training Vietnamese soldiers at the School of Counter-Insurgency and Jungle Warfare in Vairengte in Mizoram.

In today's foreign ministry's press briefing, govt has denied sale to Vietnam . And Vietnam govt seems to have been denied the sale too..

I suspect the story was planted by Chinkis to get clarity on ambiguity.

Basically we got played..

One set of Indian media created ambiguity and other set of Indian media cleared the ambiguity. Chinkis got what they needed.

Or how about sale did happened but was to be kept under wrapped but some over enthused personnel from vietnam blew the lid and now both are containing it by denying it.

Vietnam hails burgeoning defense ties with India

Today we learned an important lesson, Never trust single source news on such important development without confirmation from authorities. Especially when "News" is coming from a third world country with low journalistic standards.

Yup, you can't hide such important trilateral deals.

Possible but

Highly unlikely...

The numbers would have shown up some where. Either in parliament or BDL Tenders or Godrej numbers.

Personally I don't think we are that good that we can hide a sale of a defence system to another country.

We wouldn't be able to pull off this kind of secret sale. Firstly because we are amateurs in the field on international weapons sales so our babus could never manage it so smoothly and secondly the embedded Commies in our media and political class would never sit quiet about such a sale

Rightly said Sir. But could there be a possibility that we downplayed so that chinks think we didn't sold the viet's our missiles. So that when they plunge into any aggression viet's could play there gambit.

This is the era of modi. We did things we couldn't have imagined before. We rescued so many people from Yemen and Syria at lightning speed. We did the surgical strikes while keeping absolute secrecy before it.
Demonetization hit without even a whisper of it. Chinese suddenly found Indian soldiers blocking road at doklam and went into a shock they are yet to recover.

We are getting better and better at surprising.

Now either the missiles are with Vietnam and we might want quite because of Russia.
Or the whole drama was to just give a glimpse to chinese of future if they don't back off.
