Special events at Shri Adi Shankaracharya’s birthplace Kalady, Kerala today to commemorate this event.

A malayali who travelled the length and breadth of Bharat to unify Hindus and debating Buddhists would today be saddened to see his home state overrun with Arab and Yemeni restaurants selling beef dishes.

Why is the head priest of Badrinath temple chosen from Kerala?

Well, its a fact the head priest of Badrinath in Uttarakhand is normally a Malayalee priest from Kerala. Infact, as a matter of tradition, Uttarakhand Government normally requests Kerala Government to nominate a priest from the state for its temple services, a tradition done since 19th century when the erstwhile Kingdom of Garhwal (the princely state which comprises of modern Uttarakhand state) entered into an agreement with the Kingdom of Travancore for supply of Nampoothiri priests to the temple of Badrinath.

The current Rawal (Melshanti as known among Malayalees) of Badrinath (as the head priest is known) is Shri Easwara Prasad Namboothiri. The temple also has a junior priest called Nayab Rawal (Keezhshanti as in Malayalam) who is too from Kerala. The current Nayab Rawal is Sankara Nampoothiri.

The Priests of 3 key temples in the Himalayan region, ie Badrinath, Kedarnath (both in Uttarakhand) and Pashupatinath in Nepal, have South Indians as head priests. Badrinath has a Malayalee priest, Kedarnath normally has someone from Karnataka as head priest, while Pashupatinath has mostly from Bhatta community of Tulu Nadu.

You'll find a large number of priests from South in Ayodhya too(way before this place became popular due to politics). My grandparents had their Telugu kulguru from 60s and even earlier. Almost every religious household near the place has a "Kulguru" who is someone from the South. And these priests still make an yearly trip to their ancestral places to seek marital alliances so that their culture remains preserved.
In a nutshell, you can find a Awadhi and Tamil speaking priest in the markets of Gosainganj of what was earlier the Faizabad district of UP(now Ayodhya, rightfully). Was quite a surprise the first time.

Thanks for posting this. Me being a Garhwali know this fact from a long time. But many outside UK and many in the state also don't know this fact. Uttarakhand has many families whose ancestral roots are in South, before they moved here years ago.

Interconnections between various regions of our country is often lost among the ‘educated’. Requires reading of authentic sources to understand the deeper meanings and details contained within. A lifetime isn’t enough for such an exercise.
