Every one in this forum knows that metal armor needs anti spall coating to protect soldiers from splinters.
That equipping jawans properly would entail an entire cultural shift in officer soldier relations that no one is willing to undertake atm. As long as commandos get the good equipment it's all good,

Government Contracts World Class Bullet Proof Jackets for Army Under ‘Make In India’ Initiative

A major contract through capital procurement route, for procurement of 1,86,138 Bullet Proof Jackets (BPJs) has been signed. The impending requirement of the Indian Army for effective BPJs, has been met after successful conduct of stringent field evaluation trials.

The contracted BPJs have contemporary and state-of-the-art specifications with added protectional level and coverage area. These ergonomically designed BPJs have modular parts, thereby providing immense protection and flexibility to soldiers operating in different operational situations ranging from long distance patrolling to high risk room intervention scenarios. The new BPJs will provide 360 degree protection to the soldier in combat, including from latest hard steel core bullets.

The concerns for BPJs for the Indian Army, have been raised at the highest levels, even in the civil domain and media reports amidst heightened security situation, along the borders and in the hinterland in the disturbed areas. The provisioning of this operationally urgent and very critical equipment concerning personal ballistic protection, will boost the confidence of the soldier and provide moral ascendency to security forces.

The case was processed as a ‘Buy Indian’. The provision of these new BPJs was done by Indian manufacturers who were successful in the trials. This has given an impetus to the ‘Make in India’ initiative of the Government, and provides confidence that the Indian Industry is capable of fulfilling the requirements of Indian Army for its personal protective equipment.

I like how our jingoes lose their cool over every stupid dalali piece report published in our """defence media""". Relax boys. Nothing of the sort is going to happen. It's desi till the end. Basically on this issue both govt & army are playing a game of chicken since 2014 seeing who blinks first.

Government inks Rs 639 crore deal for 1.86 lakh new bullet-proof jackets for infantry soldiers
NEW DELHI: The Army’s ordinary infantry soldiers are now finally going to get some desperately-needed modern bullet-proof jackets + under a Rs 639 crore contract inked on Monday, even though they remain some distance away from getting new assault rifles, close-quarter battle carbines and light-machine guns.
The Army said the major contract for procurement of 1,86,138 bullet-proof jackets(BPJs) has been signed with domestic private company SMPP Pvt. Ltd after successful conduct of stringent field evaluation trials.

“The contracted BPJs have contemporary and state-of-the-art specifications with added protection level and coverage area. These ergonomically designed BPJs have modular parts, thereby providing immense protection and flexibility to soldiers operating in different operational situations ranging from long-distance patrolling to high-risk room intervention scenarios,” said an officer.

“The new BPJs will provide 360 degree protection to soldiers in combat, including from latest hard steel core bullets,” he added. As per the contract, SMPP will start the supply of the BPJs within the next few months and complete the entire order within a period of three years.

“The new jackets meet the most advanced GSQRs 1438 (technical parameters) standards of the Indian Army. These BPJs have `Boron Carbide Ceramic’, which is the lightest material for ballistic protection,” said SMPP chairman S C Kansal.

The 1.3-lakh strong Army’s overall requirement for 3,53,765 new BPJs has been hanging fire for almost a decade now, while its soldiers make do with old bulky ones that provide poor protection and are near the end of their operational life.

Several parliamentary committees have taken an extremely dim view of this “critical shortage” of BPJs, slamming the government for “playing with the lives” of soldiers

As was first reported by TOI, the earlier proposed contract for new 1.86 lakh modular BPJs was scrapped in October 2015 because the samples offered by six vendors “failed” to clear the field trials.
The Army, in March 2016, had then gone in for the Rs 140 crore “emergency” procurement of 50,000 BPJs with older technical parameters from Tata Advanced Materials Limited.

This time, the contract for BPJs with advanced technical parameters has been inked. The Army wanted the new light-weight jackets to adequately protect the head, neck, chest, groin and sides of the foot-soldiers as well as allow them to move with greater agility during counter-insurgency operations in “unfriendly terrains”.

This is their website and they have quite a few plate carriers, no indication which IA has selected.

Never heard of SMPP before, how did they get the order over, say, MKU?

Lifesaver. First look at the Indian Army’s Level III+ BPJ. Boron Carbide Ceramic panels. Neck and groin protection. 10.4 kgs. can stop 7.62x51 ball, 7.62x39 AP, 5.56x45 steel core.

Why does IA keep asking for equipment configured for the 80s? No MOLLE? No ability to add-on sections or configure as per mission/role? No holster in on the chest for a side arm (many officers in RR do this)? No ability to even add a hydration pack?

+ Why is IA the only army going this way (heavier protection)? All other modern armies are favouring mobility over outright protection.

The idea is to cover your vital organs/centre mass and to carry your combat equipment, IA is trying to make each soldier a tank.

IA requirement is for CT ops which mostly involves close in fire fights without any external fire power support. Eg CASO cordon and search ops.

While the pics involving foreign forces you posted are geared for ops which involves medium range engagement while being supported by heavy calibre firepower. They don't involve CASO , they raze the location with heavy fire power before moving in.

So one cannot compare the requirements of IA and foreign forces with regard to body armour because the fighting tactics are different .

The foreign forces are fighting in foreign lands they don't give a damn about collateral damage.
For them mobility is important rather than full protection as they don't come in close contact with hostiles and even if they do almost all the hostiles are dead or incapacitated.

Also IA is fighting in own country so have to close in to avoid collateral damage and also catch any pigs alive if necessary for intelligence.
