Thiruvananthapuram-New airport terminal inauguration on May 20

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM:The new international terminal of the Thiruvananthapuram Airport will be formally inaugurated on May 20.Minister of State for Civil Aviation Praful Patel will attend the inaugural ceremony, it is reliably learnt.Chief Minister V.S.Achuthanandan and some of his Cabinet colleagues will also attend the function.Sources said that the airport would become operational only a month after the inauguration. The delay in completing the works of the approach road, which is being carried out by the State Government agency KITCO, was the reason for the delay in the inaugurationLaw Minister M.Vijayakumar and senior officials would visit the new terminal on May 7 to review the progress of the works. Space for various airlines as well as emigration, Customs and other related agencies have already been allotted. The aviation safety audit of the new terminal is also being carried out. The audit of the terminal building is almost complete and that of the apron will be held this week, sources said.A formal announcement on imposing user fee on departing international passengers at the new terminal is also expected to come soon, said sources. The new terminal building offering state-of-the-art facilities has been constructed at a cost of Rs 300 crore. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had laid the foundation stone for the new terminal on November 1, 2006.

Sikkim's first airport at Pakyong

Punj Lloyd Group, the diversified engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) conglomerate, today announced winning the contract to build Sikkim's first Greenfield airport project in Pakyong. The new airport will make a significant contribution to the tourism infrastructure of the state. Awarded by Airports Authority of India (AAI), this contract is valued at Rs 264 crore and is scheduled for completion in 24 months. The scope of work will include construction of 30 m wide runway of 1.7 km length, taxiway, apron drainage system and electrical work for the Airport.

Building an airport in the hilly terrain of Sikkim will be an interesting challenge. The airport will be built at a height of 1404 m above mean sea level. The scope of work shall involve excavation of 100 m depth and earth filling of slopes of 80 m height, stabilised with Geogrid Reinforced Retaining Wall. A large volume of earthwork, 65 lac m3, shall involve blasting in hard rock apart from excavation in soft rock and soil. To protect the environment, excavated slopes of 100 m height will be planted with local species of flora.
