A modern space science complex of international standards is to be set up by Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) in the Ponmudi hills, 1000 meters above sea level in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala.

The complex to come up by 2011 would house a state-of-the-art observatory with sophisticated telescopes, planetarium, space museum, special wings and the laboratories attached to the Indian Institute of Space Technology (IIST), the ISRO set up last year in Thiruvananthapuram near its Liquid Propulsion Systems Centre (LPSC). The complex will also include residential wings for visiting scientists and other VIPs.

The space complex's foundation stone was laid by TKA Nair, Principal Secretary to Prime Minister on November 1 in the 20 acres of land provided by the state government in the picturesque Ponmudi hills, 60 km from Thiruvananthapuram. The function was attended by G Madhavan Nair, ISRO's outgoing chairman, K Radhakrishnan who took over as the new chairman , PS Veeraraghavan, the newly appointed director of Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre, M Chandradathan, Director, Satish Dhawan Space Centre, Sriharikotta, MKG Nair, Director, LPSC among others.

Both Madhavan Nair and Radhakrishnan said that ISRO's roadmap until 2025 was ready for execution. The future programmes include launching of GSLV-Mark III, Chadrayan II and also human mission to space. SDSC's Dathan said the development of infrastructure for human space flight has begun at SDSC.
