Mob justice in Patna; woman’s clothes torn on road

Zeenews Bureau

Patna: In what could be termed as a shocking case of brazen mob justice, a young woman was manhandled and her clothes torn apart at the Exhibition Road of Bihar’s capital Patna on Thursday.

Visuals caught on camera showed miscreants trying to tear the girl’s attire.

Sources said that the woman was in a restaurant with his boyfriend when some miscreants caught hold of the couple and dragged them on road.

The mob then beat up the boy and tore the clothes of the woman in presence of hundreds of onlookers. The woman was then chased by them.

Reflecting upon the state’s sorry law and order condition, the incident occurred in broad daylight and there was not a single policeman presenting the area. What was more disgusting was that despite a huge crowd of onlookers present, no one came to rescue the girl who kept struggling and shouting for help.

This shameful incident shows that Nitish Kumar’s claim of good governance and law and order still needs to see daylight.

What the hell...news like this makes my stomach upset.

More reason that ever for India to abandon their religious conservatism and fully embrace modern secularism.

Where did religion come into this Koji san ??? And, we are a secular society, and yet events like this tend to happen from time to time, especially in the backward regions... secularism is not a guarantee against such horrific events...

Even China is supposedly secular and Godless, why did the Uighur event happen there then ???

The news is definately upsetting and needs to be condemed unequivocally. But the reason is not becaue India is a religious conservative (your logic on this simply fails .....). In fact the reason seems that the people who did all this did not understand their own religion quite like talibanis (which religion even if conservative says that women are to be treated this way).
Also Koji, you need to understand we are also secularists though quite unlike you guys. We are taught from school itself to respect all religions (sensible for highly diverse India). Your concept seems to be the standard western+islamic+chinese concept of keeping away from every religion even to the point of be outrightly disrespectful and in some cases even envious of other religions.
Anyhow the issue was the disrespectful treatment of the lady in question and to Ladies in general. Our society has gone through some pretty rough times for a very long time in history. In our country it is usually not the poorest person who creates difficulties (he is mostly busy trying to make both ends meet), it is the people who have gained prominence through wrong methods, who are the most troublesome. Most Indians who have learned well know that the problem is the fuedal setup in most backward parts of the country (yes some parts are better developed then some others - something that a Japanese may find difficult to understand given his small, homogenous country). The parts of society that want to do something about all this are hamstrung by significant economic disabilities (not much money to put in improtant nation building projects). This situation is now changing these days though, after the economic libralisation. Poverty is socio economic and not religious.

Wonder if the routine molestation of Japanese women in Japan's trains and buses by "chikan" causes Koji's stomach to be upset too. Never seen him advise Japan to abandon "religious conservatism" and join the "modern secularism".

Crowded trains are a favourite location for chikan and chijo, and a 2001 survey conducted in two Tokyo high-schools revealed that more than 70% of the students had been groped on them.

Patna molestation case: Three arrested, ASI suspended

Updated on Friday, July 24, 2009, 00:36 IST
Zeenews Bureau

Patna: Taking strict note of the Zee News’ report about a woman being molested by a crowd in broad daylight, Patna police on Thursday night arrested the owner and manager of Bob Hotel where the incident took place along with the youth who accompanied the girl in the hotel.

Assistant Sub Inspector of the area, Shivraj Singh has also been suspended.

Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has ordered DGP of the state to take strict action against the culprits promising that they will not go scot-free.

Earlier in the day, a young woman was manhandled and her clothes torn apart at the Exhibition Road of Bihar’s capital Patna.

Visuals caught on camera showed miscreants trying to tear the girl’s attire.

Sources said that the woman was in a restaurant with his boyfriend when some miscreants caught hold of the couple and dragged them on road.

Uproar in Bihar assembly over assault on girl

Patna (PTI): The Bihar assembly on Friday witnessed uproarious scenes over the alleged stripping of a 22-year-old girl in public with Opposition members storming into the well of the House and forcing Speaker U N Choudhary to adjourn the proceedings at least four times.

The issue was raised by MLAs belonging to RJD, LJP, Congress and Left parties as soon as the House assembled. They trooped into the well of the House and asked the speaker to accept an adjournment motion moved by them seeking a debate on "growing atrocities on women in Bihar".

On Thursday, the girl, a resident of Jasidih in Jharkhand, was allegedly stripped by a group of people on the busy Exhibition Road here.

Shouting slogans like "Mahilaon par atyachar band karo, mahilaon ka utpidan band karo, cheer haran band karo (stop atrocities against women)", the Opposition members halted the proceeding of the House.

Mr. Choudhary was heard requesting the MLAs to return to their seats and raise the issue after the question hour. But the Opposition refused to relent and some of them lifted the reporters' chairs and put them on the desk as a mark of protest.

Gauging their mood, the speaker asked the government to make a detailed statement on Thursday's incident.

Ministers Vijendra Prasad Yadav and Ramashray Prasad Singh assured the Opposition that the state government would make a statement in this regard.

Woman stripped on Patna street; Nitish orders probe

Staff Reporter
Assailant arrested, ASI suspended dereliction

Patna: Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has ordered police chief D.N. Gautam to conduct a thorough and speedy investigation into Thursday’s alleged assault on and stripping of a woman on a Patna street, an incident he condemned as “utterly shameful and a blot on society.”

Mr. Kumar on Friday ordered that the guilty be apprehended at the earliest and convicted.

“We are taking this matter very seriously. The mobile patrolling van should have reached the spot in less than 10 minutes,” he said admonishing the police for tardiness.

It is alleged Rakesh Kumar from Muzzafarpur, along with four accomplices, beat up the victim and then stripped her in full view of the public, while the police simply stood by for an hour before taking action. He was later arrested along with the owner of a hotel where the victim was lodged.

Police sources said Rakesh was involved in the flesh trade and had lured the victim to Patna with the promise of a job. However, Additional Director-General of Police (Headquarters) Neelmani said the girl, a resident of Jasidih town in Jharkhand, was already into the flesh trade and that she was assaulted following a disagreement over money.

Uproar in Assembly

Mr. Neelmani said assistant sub-inspector Shiv Nath Singh, who was in charge of patrolling the area, was placed under suspension on the charge of dereliction of duty.

In the Assembly, members of Opposition Rashtriya Janata Dal, Lok Jan Shakti Party, Communist Party of India (ML) Liberation and Congress stormed into the well in protest against the Patna incident, bringing proceedings to a grinding halt. The House was adjourned several times.

The Opposition members shouted slogans, “Stop atrocities against women,” and put chairs on desks as a mark of protest.

When the House convened after lunch, the Opposition refused to relent, forcing the Speaker to adjourn it for the fourth time till 4.30 p.m.

The Opposition continued with its protests even as Water Resources Minister Vijendra Prasad Yadav tried to make a statement on behalf of the government.

The first supplementary budget and the appropriation bill were passed amidst the pandemonium.

Mr. Nitish Kumar appealed to the Opposition parties not to “politicise the event by indulging in petty bickering and blame game.”

“It is important to send the right message to society by debating the matter constructively and remaining united in resolving the issue,” he said.
