Casteism in India has gotten a lot of criticism, and rightly so. The way casteism is at present should not even exist. We should throw it out. Casteism as we find it today is now nothing more than a misrepresentation and misinterpretation of a legitimate and progressive Vedic system known as varnashrama. However, we need to know the difference between the two, then get rid of present-day casteism to again utilize the genuine and liberal form of social organization, known as varnashrama.

Problem started when Mughals, and then Britishers, couldn't differentiate and merged "Verna" & "Jaati".

Jaati = Ethnicity, related to bloodline
Verna = Job Role, not related to bloodline

Verna was rooted in the concept of 4 avenues of power.
> Knowledge
> Weapons
> Money
> Land

Thus to maintain a balance in the society, it was mandated that no person can obtain more than one avenues of power, thus preventing ultra-powerful hegemons in society.

Either pursue Knowledge (Brahmin), or Weapons (Kshatria), or Money (Vaishya), or Land (Shudra), but never 2 or more of them together.

If the son of a Santhal Farmer (Santhal Shudra) becomes a scholar, then he becomes a Santhal Scholar (Santhal Brahmin).
He carries on his bloodline (Jaati - Santhal) and changes his job (Verna:Shudra to Verna:Brahmin)

there was a time when India had better society (probable modern democracy like) than rest of the world, the people used to do work according to their skills, the cast system was just group of people doing their work, scholars were called brahmins, the protectors/ warriors were called as kshatriyas, the traders and like minded became the Vaishyas, and the good for nothing became shudras, the idea of what is your cast ? was not like it is assumed today. afterall one of the greatest scripture which the hindus follow was written by Valmiki who was a shudra. later on as all system get corrupt in due course of, time this system was also corrupted and those who were on the higher end maintained it as it best suited their desires.

If people were organized by skill, why do you call Valmiki a Sudra wouldn't e be a schola/brahmin because of his work?

So, Valmiki was not a Sudra. This is what I wanted to clarify, the guy I quoted got me confused. Thanks.
Valmiki was a Shudra, however, caste doesn't give one a monopoly over enlightenment. The great Ravidas was a Cobbler, Kabirdas a weaver etc.

Till date elevation of caste has occurred maybe less than a handful of times afaik.

People who claim Valmiki as their ancestors are colloquially called the B word, which can land you a longtime in jail.

Another possibility,

In earlier times the population was so small and opportunities so limited, the sons usually followed their father's profession and hence the caste system became hereditary.

Valmiki was earlier a robber and murderer. Hence an out caste. But if you uae English term, which seems much more , he was an outlaw.

There were people in buthers and meat seller business. They obviously lived out side the towns. They were not socialised by others. What about today? People go to meat shop and buy what they want, and do not tarry for socializing, even the other customers. But chaishops and paan shops witness political discussions. But then physicians, brahmins, priests at shanshan too were sort of untouchable. In Manu's scheme a Shudra is a competent witness, and can even be a minister. But physicians as witness were the last resort, and unfit to be judges, what to talk of being ministers.

In 20th century, Gandhi and Ambedkar were the biggest culprits in emphasising castes. I love you and will stay in BHANGI colony. For show he did too, but normally lived in Birla house.

He is belonged to a tribe in Jungle(as @Eesh mentioned an outcast), he used to be a robber. When Sita was sent to Jungles by Ram then he left her at a place where Valimiki tribe used to live.
Valmiki's caste of birth is not known.

Valmiki a tribe? Not known, it is a conjecture. By the time Sita was exiled, Valmiki was a renowned Rishi and she lived in his ashram.

Balmiki and Valmiki tribes are there but are not related to sage Valmiki.

There is a controversy of the past life of Valmiki and then there is a judgement regarding Valmiki as a robber.

Valmiki - Maharishi Valmiki Biography - Valmiki Life History - Maharshi Valmiki Profile

But now a days people try to twist and do things for the sake of their own fake superiority. History is tough to judge when enough evidences are still to be found.
