Mirage 2000 fighter plane crashes in MP, pilots safe.
Agencies : Bhopal/New Delhi, Fri Feb 24 2012, 14:23 hrs

A Mirage 2000 fighter aircraft of the Indian Air Force (IAF) on Friday crashed near Bhind in Madhya Pradesh soon after taking off from an air base in Gwalior but both the pilots managed to eject.

The Mirage 2000 aircraft was on a routine training sortie when it developed a snag in the engine and crashed near Bhind district, an IAF spokesperson said.

He said the two pilots in the aircraft had managed to eject and search and rescue operations have been launched to locate them.

The IAF has ordered a court of inquiry (CoI) to ascertain the reasons behind the crash.

The Air Force operates a fleet of 51 Mirage aircraft from the Maharajpura air base in Gwalior.

These aircraft started getting inducted into the IAF in the mid-80s and have had a very good flight safety record, the spokesperson said.

The IAF has also recently signed two deals worth over $ 3.2 billion for upgrading the capabilities of the Mirage 2000 with French companies Dassault, Thales and MBDA.

This is the second crash involving an IAF aircraft this year. A Kiran MK II trainer plane had crashed in Chennai on January 30.

In this financial year, this is the eighth crash of a fighter aircraft of which most were from the MiG 21 series.

This is scary:scared2:

lot of inquiries are ordered after such crashes. what is the outcome of such inquires? IAF has lost so many aircrafts, what do they analyse after such crashes. Are we incorporating the short fallings

Still the safety record of the Mirage 2000 is better than the Mig 29

Both were inducted simultaneously

And let us not forget that till 2020 when ALL the 51 Mirages are to be upgraded we WILL have some 10
more Mirage 2000 crashes ie at least ONE per year

I dont think even the old ejection seats are working in the Mig-21. Its criminal if they send up a pilot in an old and decaying aircraft with no ejection system.

One crash per year of every type of aircraft is considered normal

Infact in 2004 or 2005 I exactly don t remember there were THREE Mirage 2000 crashes in ONE year
which led to the GOI expressing its " serious concern " to the IAF

And then one team of experts came from Dassault to investigate

I just found the link to an EVEN worse NEWS relating to Mirage 2000

In the year 2004 there were FOUR Mirage 2000 crashes

This from a Times of India news of NOVEMBER 15 2004

" Early last week a Mirage 2000 caught fire and crashed outside Gwalior killing the pilot. It was the fourth Mirage 2000 to crash in the last couple of months.

The Mirage crashes set off alarm bells because it is not only IAF's favourite fighter to replace MiG-21s but also remains one of the India's most credible nuclear platform to date. "

I have a couple of doubts
1) How can th report say that the engine developed snags, when no reports from the Court of Inquiry have come?
2) Is this an upgraded mirage?
3)Is this the first crash of the mirage with IAF? If not are there any links for the previous crashes?
4) Is this the first crash of the Mirage jet? How many have developed similar problems before?

The old Mig-21s are grounded. I think 80 of them are going out this year. Only the Bisons are flying.

A lot of pilots lost their life due to the fault of the aircraft and not the seats.

This Figure of 51 aircraft MUST have been arrived after taking into consideration the POSSIBILITIES
of at least ONE Mirage 2000 crashing per year

so we must be having at least 61 planes ie 51 plus 10 as a reserve which might crash till 2020

No sir it is totally impossible that IAF has not considered the possibility of a Mirage 2000 crash happening

This 51 aircraft order is a FIRM contract which has been SIGNED and SEALED

So do you want to say that tomorrow we will tell the French

" Hey we have LOST a few planes , So your contract is terminated and we cant pay you any more
because We dont have 51 planes "

How embarrassing it would be just IMAGINE !!!

Fortunately we DO NOT have SUCH tight budgets any more

And losses and crashes are a Normal feature of every plane and every airforce
