The midsize VF 8 and full-size VF 9 are said to be coming by the end of this year.

VinFast, a fresh startup automaker hailing from Vietnam, is almost ready to start selling vehicles in the U.S. The company announced back in November that it will start U.S. operations with two electric SUVs, and this week used the CES event in Las Vegas to reveal three other electric SUVs, two of which will also make it to America.

Le Thi Thu Thuy, Global CEO of VinFast, also announced in Las Vegas that her company plans to retire the internal combustion engine (ICE) by the end of this year, focusing all its resources on electric vehicles. Currently, VinFast sells electric and ICE vehicles in Vietnam. The move also caused the company to start a new nomenclature for its vehicles. The VF e35 and VF e36, the two electric SUVs shown at the Los Angeles auto show in November, are dropping their "e" signifiers and are now simply the VF 8 (a two-row midsize SUV) and VF 9 (three-row full-size crossover).

While there is no set date for VinFast to start operations in the U.S., the company expects to start selling these two vehicles by the end of 2022, while the VF 6 and VF 7 will be commercialized in 2023. VinFast has also announced plans to build a U.S. factory to manufacture batteries (though its location isn't set yet).

So, what are the two products VinFast will enter the U.S. market with?
VF 8

Starting at $41,000, the VF 8 is a five-passenger midsize SUV that's about the size of a Ford Edge. Its styling is sharp, with a wing-like running light that cuts across the nose giving the VF 8 a visually wider stance. Its grille-less front quickly gives away that it's an EV, while its split headlights lend it an upscale look.

Details are very scarce, but VinFast says it will deliver 402 hp and 472 lb-ft of torque with a 316-mile range. That last number is based on the European Emission Test Cycle, which means the EPA will rank it well below that. Still, that should be competitive with today's electric crossovers, should the battery deliver. Acceleration to 60 mph will be in the mid-five second range, according to the automaker. No word on the battery or electric motor specs or charging times.
VF 9

The full-size SUV can transport between six and seven passengers and shares the same powertrain numbers as the VF 8, except it can travel 422 miles and it can get to 60 mph in approximately 6.5 seconds—a hint that it probably has a bigger battery.
Like many full-size SUVs, the VF 9 wears boxier styling, but we're particularly thrown off by its C-pillar, as it tries to connect the windows instead of setting them apart. Like the VF 8, the front of the VF 9 has that wing-like daytime running lamp that lights up to give the SUV a futuristic look, but unlike its younger sibling, its headlights are one piece. The air vents on the front fascia help with aerodynamics and cool down the brakes.
Both SUVs share a clean interior, with a large screen on the dashboard similar to other EV startups like Tesla or Rivian, and there is no other screen or instrument cluster is in front of the driver. The cars on display at CES were locked, so we can't comment on the cabins' material quality or interior space. The jet-inspired push-button shifter is well integrated into the center console.
There's very little info on the VF 6 and VF 7. The VF 6 is about the size of a Honda HR-V, while the VF 7 is about the size of a Toyota RAV4 compact crossover. VinFast only revealed their styling without talking about their range, powertrains or charging capabilities.
Although former GM designer David Lyon has been supporting VinFast since 2017, the startup partnered with Pininfarina design studio to craft its models. And, well, we're happy with the way they came out.
There are still many questions up in the air. VinFast is talking about a battery lease program where the owner would have to pay a monthly fee with two plans available. A "flexible" plan would allow the owner to drive 300 miles per month minimum with additional costs that cover any milage above. A "fixed" plan would apply for unlimited range. VinFast says the monthly cost of driving one of their EVs is similar to the gasoline costs in each market, though it's still unclear what that exactly means. With this program, however, the company will cover all expenses on battery maintenance and will replace the owner's used battery for free when charging and discharging capacities fall below 70 percent.

How will VinFast sell cars in the U.S? The company plans to start setting up a network of dealers starting in California later this year. When will it start operations? What are the details underneath the SUVs? Those are all questions still unanswered, though the company is excited to enter the market at some point this year. To get U.S. customers hooked, VinFast is introducing a voucher program to go along the reservations. With a $200 deposit, the customer can get a $3,000 voucher for the VF 8 and a $5,000 voucher for the VF 9, along with an NFT and blockchain technology.

We hope to have more answers soon, but in the meantime, you might want to consider getting into the voucher program. The $200 are refundable should you change your mind.

The rear of the VF 7 with identical cubes and the front of the car. The rear LED strip lights run across the hips, continuing to create a V-shaped highlight. The triangular cavity looks like an air intake, but in fact is placed a functional light cluster behind.

The interior of the VF 7 is also completely different from the VF e34 being sold in Vietnam. The new model uses a large touch screen placed in the middle, slightly tilted towards the driver. The steering wheel is beveled at the bottom and does not have a rear dashboard, supporting information with a HUD glass screen.

Car and 2 wheeler manufacturing is becoming like smartphones. It's and will put out traditional car manufacturer. All one have to do is source components from different companies all over the world, pack it and sell it as theirs (Micromax).
Even software is available for limited auto driving.

Traditional car manufacturers has to come out with innovative solution. People are probably tired of paying more for petrol/gas. Electric/Hydrogen is the future. India has talked big on Hydrogen, but not sure if it has taken any steps at all. It

Yes, I think VN will the the plan to sell our EV in India, too. But we need to build millions charging stations for ev cars first, and they are not cheap.

So, we will try to gain the market in EU-US first bcs they already have millions charging stations there 💌

Not a problem. in fact, the Indian government is set to provide more and more incentives for setting up EV charging stations across the country. It has begun to gather some steam.

Very good news, happy to see EV will be popular in VN.

Most EV supply chains are made in China and quite closed to VN, it will generate lots of sales from Chinese vendors.

Plus Chinese is exporting electricity and power plant to VN, will be good business if more charging stations will be built, i can imagine even the plug standard VN will use China's.

that's why i m happy to see a rich VN than poor.

Thanks, but actually its too hard to keep VN in poor like in N.Korea bcs we have many friends and many investors wanna come to VN now.

It'd better think abt win-win deal with VN, even USA wants win-win deal with VN now when they still slapping santion/trade war to CN, making at least over 600 million CNese can't even earn more than 1,000 yuan (USD 140) and their lives have further been affected by the coronavirus pandemic :)

Which mean 500 to 800 million are mid income people, almost equal to the whole popluation as USA or EU.

The Vin Group had only total 10 Billion asset by 2021, and its brand VinSmart phone quit the market by 2021, since the bad performance and invasion of Chinese brands, even 90% of this phone's componoents were from China supply chain.

The Mobile phone is the 2nd comlicated product for consuming market with 1000+ components, guess which one is 1st? Yes, the Automobile, with 20000-40000 parts.

If Vin group can't do the simple thing like making mobile phone, how possible to make EV car? Those cars are made by engineering evaluation version, it's still far from mass production.

Yes, you can use 1 billion USD to buy a team and a plan from BMW and made tens of fancy demo car, raise money from stock market, and then? How to sell to people? More like a capital game with some scum.

To be frank, in Chinese market, 10+ players are buying this kind of car plan, to launch some new brand every month.

The lucky thing is Chinese auto market is the biggest in the world so dose the supply chain, and people have purcahse power. But for Vietnam's per $2,000 GDP (it's Per GDP, not Per income!) and bad power grid, i don't see any chance.

VinFast CEO Lohscheller steps down from post

I checked our auto industry related forums, some comments:

1. "they bought out dated BWM production lines, and even no air conditioners in main assembly hall, made me feel sick"

2. The boss's daugther came to my company for coopeation years ago, but for them will be very hard to indigenized those components...

3. GOTION Hi tech will provide battery for them ...

If you wana more comment, i can translate to you, dude.

VinFast seeks EV production site in Germany
Vietnamese automaker is working with German trade agency to find location to build electric cars and buses

January 06, 2022

VinFast has opened pre-orders for the VF e35 (pictured) in the U.S. It will be badged as the VF 8.

BERLIN -- Vietnamese automaker VinFast and the economic promotion agency Germany Trade and Invest (GTAI) are working together to help the manufacturer find a location for an electric-vehicle plant in Germany.
The factory would build Vinfast electric cars and buses, the automaker said in a statement. The company did not give a target date for when the factory would open.
VinFast CEO Le Thi Thu Thuy said Europe will be one of the most important markets for the automaker. "The era of shipping cars around the world is over, especially since there is COVID-19," she said in the statement. "You have to have the factories close to the markets to really attract customers."
VinFast became Vietnam's first fully fledged domestic automaker when its gasoline-powered models went on sale in 2019. It began selling EVs in Vietnam at the end of last year.
"VinFast wants to offer high-quality e-vehicles and a special customer experience at affordable prices," Thuy said. "We are confident we can find a place in the European market, especially since the shift to e-vehicles in Europe is crystal clear."
Thuy, who is vice chairwoman of VinFast parent, Vingroup, took on the VinFast CEO role last month when German executive Michael Lohscheller, formerly head of Opel, unexpectedly stepped down for personal reasons.
The factory could build up to 250,000 cars a year, with production starting around 2025.
