Navy planning to procure four AEW&C planes

New Delhi, June 7 (PTI) Looking to strengthen its surveillance capabilities and control over the maritime zone, Indian Navy is planning to procure four aircraft carrier-based Airborne Early Warning and Control (AEW&C) planes.

"We are planning to procure four carrier-based AEW&C aircraft to carry out airborne surveillance, detection and tracking of airborne and surface contacts and control air interceptions and air strikes," Navy officials told PTI here.

At present, the Navy operates the carrier-borne Kamov-31, which were procured from Russia for early warning roles.

Using AEW&C aircraft on aircraft carriers will help in expanding the area under surveillance near the area of their deployment, they added.

"The control over the area would also be increased as the AEW&C aircraft can detect enemy fighter and maritime patrol aircraft and direct the fighter planes attached with it towards them and take them out," officials said

Carrier based?...well are we going to deploy them on the IAC or the Gorky? Both do not have a CATOBAR capability.

A specially modified E-2C to operate from R-33 INS Vikramaditya, is proposed with 6 bladed propellers and reduced internal fuel. Unfortunately, the reduction in internal fuel meant a decrease in endurance from 5 hrs to just 1 hour, leading to a rejection in the proposal, at least for now. The Indian Navy has closely studied the E-2C for a while now, 2009

.

In August 2009, the U.S. Navy and Northrop Grumman briefed the Indian Navy on the E-2D Advanced Hawkeye. This covered potential use of this platform to satisfy its current shore-based and future carrier-based Airborne Early Warning and Control (AEW&C) requirements. The Indian Navy reportedly expressed interest in acquiring up to six Hawkeyes

These Hawkeyes will provide extreme surveillance nearby Andamans and over Bay of Bengal also Arabian sea..

I rather mount the E2-D radar on top of the V22 Osprey...Boeing has already drawn up plans for the E2-D Hwkeye in the V 22...but it is fixed and not mechanically rotated. And endurance is just for 1 hour because of reduced fuel....I aint buying the E 2-D with 1/5 th of its endurance...

Wherever we turn it has to be Russia it seems for some! Like Kunal Said, Which is the Proven Carrier Based AEW&C the Russians operate or for that matter, even their Land Based AEW&C were proven not satisfactory, thats why we turned to Israel for the Phalcon!!!! You have to get your facts cleared, that there are some weapons the Russians can provide us, because they are not having it themselves!

That was the heading of the Thread!! I guess you should start posting after reading carefully whats written, rather than just post for the sake of it.

We are already operating the Helicopters, its now time to build up a true Naval Arm consisting of something much more substantial than Helicopters!

provided we have aircraft carrier which can support planes without the need of steam catapult , until then we have to depend on helicopters .

Where are Mig29s taking off from till the Carrier Arrives? We can always make them shore based and they will be having long legs too! God Speed

AJ you are talking as if we are getting these AWACS next year. Its still in planning stage and will take more than five years to induct these aircrafts so by that time we will have IAC-2.

Even started from today, within 8-9 years we can have desi AEW&C platform ready to take off from carriers. Planes be brought from overseas. Miniaturization of under-development AWACS platforms can let IN have local-made AWACS till IAC-2 commissions.

Drdo already working on IAF`s AWACS platform and previously working on Airavat ....

Airavat..
Drdo lacks small Aircraft which can land and takeoff from carrier..
Btw, i guess the present DRDO AWACS can preform with same efficiency as it preform on land..

Airavat ended tragically. DRDO/IN should scout for suitable aircraft & integrate the needed. It'll take time to have heavy aircrafts can land on IN's supercarriers.

just a thought! what if DRDO could build a suitably waterproofed version of it's AEW unit and integrate it onto a BE 200 seaplane??

Could be possible. But these seaplanes will require fueling on even medium range missions. As a shore based AEW platform, it can serve well. However, many technical issues will be glitches including the limited Take-off weight of these seaplanes. But I feel carrier based AEW are still required in deep waters.
