ULFA leader Paresh Barua arrested in B'desh?

Jun 14 (PTI) Top ULFA leader Paresh Barua, on the run for three decades, has been arrested here, a Bangladeshi newspaper reported today, but the police dismissed it as a "hoax".
The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) officials arrested a suspected Indian national at a house in central Dhaka's posh residential locality Dhanmondi late last night, said widely-circulated Bengali dailies 'Ittefaq' and 'Samakal'.

The police is ascertaining whether the arrested man, from whom a passport was recovered with the name Shamsul Alam on it, has any link with the separatist Indian group ULFA, the newspapers said.

Quoting an unnamed intelligence official, Samakal said the arrested man was Paresh Barua, the prime accused in the seizure of huge arms and ammunitions along the Chittagong coast in 2004. Police, however, did not confirm, it added.

However, a senior CID official dismissed the reports of Barua's arrest.

"Following the reports in the two newspapers about the arrest of Paresh Barua, we checked the matter and found it to be hoax... No such person was arrested by our men as reported," the official told PTI.

Ex-Bangla intel chief confirms ISI-ULFA link

A long-suspected nexus between Pakistan's ISI and insurgency groups active in India's northeast have come to light with detained former Bangladesh intelligence chief confirming Islamabad's intelligence agency's link to the sensational supply of arms to ULFA in 2004.
The former director of Bangladesh's intelligence agency and a key suspect in the country's biggest ever arms haul case has confirmed that ISI was involved in the aborted smuggling of weapons believed to be destined to the ULFA hideouts in northeast India, a media report said on Monday.
Retired Wing Commander Shahabuddin, an ex-director of the National Security Intelligence told investigators that detained suspects of the haul had several talks with ISI officials working with Pakistan's High Commission in Dhaka, Pratham Olo said quoting officials familiar to the probe.
Shahabuddin was remanded last week for the second time to the custody of security agencies, who said they desired further clarifications on the foreign link.
"There is nothing new in his statement as he was interrogated again in our custody, but he clarified some sensitive issues which were unclear until now," an unnamed official said.
Another ex-chief of NSI, retired Brigadier General Abdur Rahim, who is also in the custody of security agencies had earlier also revealed the ISI link to the case.

Great news. Hopefully this is just one stepping stone to a full and mutually beneficial relationship with Bangladesh.

Bangla court jails ULFA man for 10 yrs under Arms Act

Updated on Wednesday, August 26, 2009, 20:11 IST Tags:

Dhaka: A Bangladeshi court on Wednesday awarded 10 years of imprisonment to a suspected operative of United Liberation Front of Assam (ULFA) for illegally possessing a huge quantity of ammunition.

A court in northern frontier district of Sherpur handed down the sentence to Russel Sangma, under the tough Arms Act, a court official reached here by phone said.

Sangma also faces another charge of intruding into Bangladesh, the trial for which is yet to start.

Paramilitary Bangladesh Rifles (BDR) troops arrested Sangma in September 2007 from a frontier village and seized large quantity of ammunition kept in two plastic barrels.

Officials said Sangma was present at the court as Judge S M Badrul Islam of Joint Sessions Court and Special Tribunal handed down the sentence after examining testimonies of 11 witnesses and other evidence.
