Since this year Human Development Index didn't come out surprisingly, I tried calculating it myself.

Mean years of schooling in India in 2021 was 6.7 years

Expected years of schooling in India in 2021 (report released in 2022) was 11.9 years

Life expectancy this year at 70.42 years

GNI per capita PPP in 2022 at $8230

Result is 0.66

In 2021 it dropped mainly due to drop in life expectancy, rest due to drop in GNI per capita and mean and expected years of school.

If I use pre-pandemic numbers of expected years of schooling and 2023 GNI per capita PPP numbers leaving rest constant it comes at...

In 2024 we can expect a GNI per capita PPP of around $10,000
HDI comes at 0.67458

Looks like mean years of schooling has a lot of weight in that index. Just put in 8.7 instead of 6.7 and the HDI went up by a lot.

It's sad though that the average Indian only spend 7 years in school. Wonder if there's a state by state breakdown for this. Probably Bihar, Rajasthan and some other states are pulling the overall average down.

That is not used for calculations of HDI, GNI per capita PPP is used.
Although I am interested in knowing how did UN come up with this data and sample size.

And what about Higher Education ? Why all thrust on Schooling. India Produces 1/4th of engineers of the world but it does not count. HDI needs a deeper overhaul to make it more representative. The other area needs reworking is re-computation of INR in PPP. The figure around 20 + against USD is gross miss-representation of actual purchase power of INR.
