Wouldn’t it be super if there was a Dixon type OEM for EV two and three wheelers, in India..

Small startups will take their EV design to OEM, and do a limited production run for 10-20 thousand vehicles. no need to invest in manufacturing plant. If they have successful product in their hands, then they can plan on investing in their own manufacturing plant.

Compared to regular bikes and autos,EV Production is less complicated.

Ather 450 to roll out of new Hosur plant in Tamil Nadu

The two-wheeler EV maker and Tamil Nadu government have signed an MoU for a 4 lakh square feet facility that will manufacture the Ather 450 and its lithium-ion batteries.

Ather Energy has signed an MoU for a 4,00,000 square feet electric vehicle manufacturing facility with the government of Tamil Nadu, at the Investment and Skill Development Conclave in Chennai. The EV two-wheeler maker has already announced plans to expand to 30 cities in the next few years and this MoU will help scale up production plans for the same. The built-up factory will be located in Hosur, Tamil Nadu and is supported by the state government under its EV policy. This MoU comes on the heels of a big push for electric two-wheelers by State & Central Governments, with an updated FAME policy, GST reduction and benefits for taxpayers on loans for electric two-wheeler purchase. The facility will not only cater to the EV manufacturing demand but also for Ather’s lithium-ion battery manufacturing, which is a key area of focus for the company going ahead. The investment is an opportunity for value creation in the sector and will create job opportunities for the region. More than 4,000 employees will be trained in requisite skills in the EV sector as a part of this initiative over the next five years. Ather Energy opened pre-orders in July 2019 for Chennai and pre-orders till December are full. The third batch of Ather 450s are now available, with deliveries expected in February-March 2020. The company has been offering test rides at their experience centre, Ather Space in Wallace Garden Street, Chennai. Ather has also been investing in setting up fast-charging infrastructure in Bengaluru and Chennai. Currently, Chennai has 10 fast charging points and more will be added in the coming months. Post the success in the two cities, Ather is gearing up to launch in Hyderabad, Pune, Delhi and Mumbai in the coming year. According to Tarun Mehta, CEO, Ather Energy, "Ather is rapidly scaling up and we need to expand our production capacity to meet the growing demand. The new unit will help us meet the demand for the next few years across the country. Tamil Nadu has been a hub for automobile manufacturing, and they have been working closely with us in their effort to build an EV ecosystem. A manufacturing facility at Hosur was an ideal choice considering that, it is close to our R&D facilities in Bengaluru and most of the existing and potential future supply base is operating in the region. The availability of a built-up option of our desired scale and proximity helped in the decision making."

Ather update:

Just realized that in March, our Bangalore experience center likely sold the highest number of EVs out of a single outlet, ever in India.

About to cross into 500 monthly sales out of Indiranagar alone and very excited to now open more outlets in Bangalore!

glad to see they are making a mark in this current economic conditions, I see glimmer of hope in domestic ev design n manufacturing.

this is not much but its good starting point

Government's incentive scheme will transform the manufacturing sector of India will fuel a high growth for atleast a decade to make India a 10 tr USD economy by 2030. The solar cell and battery vehicles will ease India's energy need and ease the pressure on INR which will help INR to strengthen and boost the size of Indian economy.

But is there any decrease in prices of iPhones now.
When they started making iPhone X and XR in India, they did decrease prices a bit but not to the level they were priced in US. Still was much costlier than US and other Western markets.

One thing we need to think about. Its great that iphone now assembled in india but the technology is with US and they can move plant to some another country in future. I think we need to innovate technology so india can get the money royalty share where ever assembled.

for that to happen there needs to be free trade agreement with the countries from where raw materials are coming from. Import tariffs have an impact on final price to consumer.

That case won't let remain technology with Apple alone then.

If Indian ecosystem discovers and prodictionises any key technologies successfully, an Indian equivalent of technology company will emerge. Just like Huawei emerged in China.
And then, Indian government will be more interested in promoting and establishing that company on top of the world instead of running after Apple.

They don't do this to cut the prices, they do this to save on insane customs and other taxes when you import a fully boxed phone, the amount that is saved goes into their margins, that is excluding the amount they pay Foxconn or whoever to run this assembly line..

The easier way to do this is switching the suppliers of subcomponents to Indian ones, like for the iPhone chassis/body, the PCB, the assembled battery, the connectors, microphone, speaker, etc

Most of the other parts like screen, SoC/DRAM/Flash memory, camera sensor + lenses, battery li-ion cell itself are too high tech and are procured from usually 1-3 companies located in US, Japan, Korea or Taiwan

There is nothing especially “high tech “ or “cutting edge” in an iPhone btw compared to Android chinkphone competitors.

Lab Grown Diamonds Sparking the Atmanirbhar Bharat Dream

It is a well-known fact that India has had a long-established connection with diamonds not since years but centuries! The earliest diamond in the world was found in India in the 4th century BC and later some of the finest quality diamonds (majority Type IIa diamonds) were produced from the historical Golconda mines during the 7th century BC.

Over time as the Indian mines depleted, India’s control over the trade got restricted to its strong manufacturing capabilities where in over 95% of the diamonds worldwide are cut & polished in India.

However, times are changing again for India. With rising popularity of lab grown diamond across the world and India being the world’s leading producer of Type IIa CVD diamonds – India once again is regaining its claim to fame of being the world’s leading producer of the finest quality diamonds.

Thanks to the CVD (Carbon Vapor Deposition) technology that is indigenously developed and completely made in India – India is now emerging as a global hub of not just manufacturing but also Diamond Production.

“This is just the beginning for India. FY 21 yet again proved to be a robust year for the Indian lab grown industry with exports up 74% y/y, crossing INR 5,000 Crores in value. Going forward, the industry will see an even stronger growth in exports as global economies recover and there will be a significant pick up in consumer demand. And India will have a huge role to play in further shaping up the industry worldwide because of its expanding growing & production strength of CVD diamonds combined with manufacturing strength but also a huge consumption potential with the largest millennial population,” says Limbasiya.
