Al Zarrar use a simple spaced armor on turret, effective against HESH and simpler, less capable shaped charges or EFP's, but that's all.
As per HIT spokesman, "There has been changes in composite armour structure with an added layers, thicker side skirts, improved transmission, FCS made by HIT in association with Krauss Maffei", Thetis TI etc.

also spoke about some new ammunitions but that was it.

I doubt that there is a lot of space for composite armor over the turret, simply because the turret is still the same old cast turret of T-54/55 sieries and their chinese clones, so it's shape is not too much friendly for composites.

Besides this, there is a photo of destroyed Al Zarrar with part of this box shaped structure welded to turret removed, and it shows that inside it is empty.

The armour filler might have been removed. Some images of destoryed M1A1 also show the empty cavity, because the composite armour was removed after the destruction of the tank. Still the thickness is rather small.

Damian - im almoust sure that on those destroyed Al Zarrar photos "special armour" was removed - like on Abrams in Iraq. And the LOS thickens on Al Zarrar turret allowed to put armor module thick as our polish CAWA-2 armour so circa 200-300mm thicknes. It shouid be enought against most RPG-7 grandes and maybe older Malutka and...HESH rounds.

notice the turret front on the right side in this image is intact, so militarysta must be right

This confirms it, so composite armour remained intact even after attack. n case of air, this would not be the case.

Hmm

These photos actually do not confirms anything, what I mean by a better photos, is to actually see intact cavity to see if there is armor insert or just air gap.

Can you provide the photo of Challenger 2 turret without Dorchester armor? it is not visible, the best would be if you would use imageshack or something like that to show this photo.
