MUMBAI: The state government has incurred a cost of Rs 9 crore on helicopter surveillance of the Naxal areas of the Maharashtra.

Government Resolutions that were issued on Monday mention that of the Rs 10 crore that have been incurred, Rs 5 crore were disbursed on January 3 and the remaining Rs 4 crore was sanctioned today.

Officials from the home department said that the government has a contract of Rs 19 crore with helicopter operator Pawan Hans, and has used its services in Gadchiroli, Nanded, Yavatmal, Gondhia areas and incurred a cost of Rs 10 crore last year.

"We use helicopters for aerial surveillance, as there are some areas that cannot be accessed on foot. The government had its own helicopter, but it has been nonfunctional for the want to repairs,"said a senior official

In 2015, 56 naxals have surrendered themselves to the police in Gadchiroli district of the state, highest in the last five years and not a single police personnel casualty was caused during operations, a first in the last 10 years. And 26 naxalities were arrested by co-ordinated operations by the police and the special force.

If they can reduce the cost with drones without sacrificing the effectivity, then they should look into it.

On the other hand good money for pawan hans.

CRPF is already doing that, the MHA should also raise an arwing that serves ALL CAPFs, not have the CAPFs have to go to Pawan Hans or raise their own induviusal air wings (as BSF has already done and ITBP wants to do).
