Mackerel war between China and South Korea sees fisherman shot dead
South Korean coastguard shoots Chinese fishing captain dead after clash in the Yellow Sea

An annual sea battle between South Korea and China for falling fish stocks in the waters between them saw a Chinese fishing captain shot dead on Friday.

Captain Song Houmo, 45, was shot in the stomach by a South Korean coastguard officer after "violently resisting" an inspection by the coastguard boat in waters off South Korea's west coast.

Both Chinese and South Korean fishermen trawl the Yellow Sea between the two countries for increasingly smaller stocks of pacific mackerel and yellow croaker.

Since 2001, the sea has been divided into three zones, with the middle area jointly administered by the two countries.

Chinese fishermen, pushed ever further into the Yellow Sea because of the pollution flowing into the waters around China, have increasingly clashed with South Korean coastguards who accuse them of poaching in their waters.

"Fishermen from China and South Korea can both fish in the middle zone, which is managed by both sides, but if Chinese fishermen want to fish in the South Korean side and vice versa they need to get a license from the other government," said Wang Jun, a professor at the Chinese Academy of Fishery Science.

Violence has become common, with many Chinese crewmen now reportedly wielding weapons to try to escape arrest and fines. In 2011, after a Chinese fisherman stabbed a South Korean coastguard to death, the South Korean government released pictures of a Chinese fishing boat armed with steel fences and spears.

The latest episode came 90 miles off Jeolla island, close to the boundary between the middle zone and the zone administered by South Korea.

The 45-year-old Chinese captain was airlifted to the Mokpo Hankook hospital but pronounced dead about 30 minutes later.

A spokesman for the Chinese Foreign ministry said China was "extremely shocked by this violent act of law enforcement" and called for an "immediate and thorough" investigation.
A Chinese fisherman was also shot by South Korean coastguards in 2012.

It appears that China feels all the seas in the world is that of China.

Even though the fishing grounds have been amicably divided and controlled by both China and South Korea, the Chinese dirty and pollute their side and then want to take over the South Korean side of the fishing grounds!

That is real selfish and preposterous.

China really cannot live in peace or honour their commitments.

Sad man, the fishermen don't have anything to do with Chinese factories polluting the water, they are just some poor fisherman trying to make a meager living and provide for their families. I'm sure frustrations run high, but it is sad when people die over problems that could have been easily avoided.

China will muddy their won waters and then demand that the clean water is theirs!

What a mindset!

China in this case has not contest the territory unlike what you claim. As with fishing right, China and S Korea has already made arrangement in 2001. In this case, the fisherman may have violate the treaty by crossing the designated zone. However, the Chinese protest is based on the treatment of the fisherman instead of border issue.

It is not my fault that you have only a rudimentary knowledge and comprehension of the English language.

The Chinese are imperialistic hegemonists.

All their action proves so.

The Yellow Sea and Boohai Sea as one large marine ecosystem (LME) is located at temperate Zone. The number of species is much less than other seas. There are about 300 fish species, 41 crustaceans and 20 cephalopods in this region. Warm-temperate species are more dominated than warm-water species among the fishery species. There are few cold-temperate species in this region. In the central part of Yellow Sea, a basin with a depth of 70-80m, so called Yellow Sea depression, is an ideal overwintering ground for most migratory species. The coastal waters along the Yellow and Bohai Seas are the main spawning grounds for both migratory and local species...

The catches in the LME are mainly from the migratory species. The main commercially important species include Spanish mackerel (Scomberomorus niphonius), chub mackerel (Pneumatophorus japonicus), pomfret (Stromateoides sinensis), Japanese anchovy (Engraulis japonica), half fin anchovy (Setipinna taty), Chinese herring (Ilisha elongata), small yellow croaker (Pseudosciaena polyactis), yellow drum (Nibea albiflora), penaeid shrimp (Penaeus chinensis), southern rough shrimp (Trachypenaeus curvirostris) and squids etc.

as a matter of fact some incidents may involve trilateral interests. many fishing grounds r located in the disputed zone btwn N.Korea and S.Korea. The S.K.'s NLL (northern limit line) is almost along the coastline of the north whereas the North's line is certainly in their own favor. some Chinese trawlers pay for NK's permits and operate in the overlapping part. NK patrol ships offer protection for fishing of both NK and Chnese with permits.
