Hello, the water crisis is being overblown. Vagaries of monsoon create either excessive rains or short on rains. It has been happening for the last two thousand years. It was King Chandragupta Mauraya he left Pataliputra for south because it did not rain for seven years. Then it rained and carried away all Pataliputra.

It has not rained enough about 15% less in india, hence this water shortage clamour has started. It may still rain in next two months because some climatic change is delaying the on set of rains by a month. Hence hold off on your talk of water shortage.

Direct your energies to how to store excess water of monsoon and save it for dry season or reduce water consumption by making agriculture more water efficient. Agriculture is the biggest and most inefficient user of water. When you have finished your suggestions on agriculture then direct your energies to purify water so that it becomes potable with ease.
Thermal power plants are biggest user of water. We should stop them at the earliest. We should put put in place a mechanism of using municipal wastewater for industries. Good freshwater should exclusively be for human usage only.

In india 80% of the water is used for agriculture... paddy and sugar cane being the water guzzlers.
Thermal power plants are no where agri in this regard.

The effective way to reduce agriculture water consumption is to go for organic/natural farming. You can reduce water consumption bellow half and simultaneously improve ground water. I am putting my infrastructure to do that.

We get more than enough water from monsoon but we can't store it . And most of it goes back to see as floods.

We need to go back to ancient way of ponds and Wells.

Use mgneraga for it. Now as there is lot of unemployment. Start building ponds , Wells and checkdams at massive scale.

Build 2-3 ponds per village with 8-10 Wells as 2-3 check dams . Put mnrega workers to it. No machinery is required only pay for labour.

That way next monsoon we will have millions of cubic feet of extra fresh water storage. It will also help in replenish ground water.

Yup paddy and sugar cane should be moved towards Easter India where massive river drainage can be utilized for crops . And save ground water in Punjab and mp.

Also make it mandatory for to have a pond build for every 5 acre of sugar cane / paddy crop ( only for big landowners.) That way they can use their own pond water collected in monsoon rather than ground water.

Water harvesting and recycling should be mandatory for all heavy users of water including big farmers.

Banjar / pahadi / useless land should be converted into mega ponds. For water conservation.

If we start using organic fertilizer, water consumption will go down drastically. In Miyawaki and permaculture methods of plantation, no water is required after 2 or 3 years. Our plantation takes the form of a jungle. Fruit or food forest method of permaculture is very famous.

Good advice ..... Rice and sugar can be moved east to Bengal, Bihar and Assam.

Organic Fertiliser like dried cow dung.

We use apprx 1/2 kg urea for 1361
Sq ft in our wheat farm, do u have a alternative.

Desalination of sea water is an option. It costs 5ps/ltr to desaline sea water in TN. Using solar power it will be further cheaper.
Source:
From 4:20
Yup Israel exports water to Arabs using desalination.
Once electricity costs go down with large solar farms desalination can provide water to all coastal towns and cities.

Yes, very cheap and effective alternative of Rs 20 for whole life. You can have fertilizer of Rs 20 for whole life no matter how big is your land. Since I am doing farming on a very huge land, I need to put my infrastructure in place.

Water can either be Stored on the surface or underground. The best way to store the water is to store it underground. The question to be asked is how can we store the water underground? Because of the excessive use of fertilizers, the upper surface of the soil has become very hard and it doesn't allow water to be percolated dip into the soil. If we start doing natural farming or organic farming in which the cow dung and cow urine is used, lots of bacteria will grow in the soil and make it very soft. My nephew was telling me that they carried out a study near Pune. Once upon a time 100 kg of soil had a water retention capacity e of 170 litre of water which was reduced to you only 30 litres. Because of the excessive use of chemical fertilizers this site to be changed if start doing organic farming then soil will become very soft and water percolate in the soil straightway rather than flowing out of the the farm. This is the correct way of doing farming. If this natural farming, model is adopted, we can store lots of water underground without recharging bore well or any other such external technique. Some case studies in Maharashtra where one cotton crop burnt out totally because of the lack of water where the chemical fertilizers is used. In the very nearby farm, the Cotton crop is lush green because they used organic farming. As I have said it repeatedly, farmers need to be educated in the field of organic farming. Chemical fertilizers will destroy farms , soils and farmers.

There are many alternatives. You can do organic farming in 15 acre land with just one cow. It is very much possible. The other alternative is waste decomposer. Just spend Rs 20 once and get fertilizer for whole life. Search for PUSA and Gaziyabad waste decomposor.

We should make large scale nurseries of fruit, vegetable, herbal and other trees. They should be planted in large scale in in abandoned land, on both the sides of rivers upto 1 KM, They should be planted on the banks of reservoirs, lakes and ponds. One policy should be made to make minimum amount of trees in every village and cities. This will help water to percolate deep into soil and will improve the water security. Local sources should be developed rater than focusing on large dams and ruining local sources. Large scale permaculture projects should be taken up.

x-post from China border conflict thread:

India to build multipurpose reservoir in Arunachal against China's hydropower project on Brahmaputra | India News

Logic, it will end our fear of floods, we should do it in Bihar and UP also to prevent floods by creating new artificial rivers that will carry extra water to drought areas of other regions during flood seasons.
There should be more of this. India's northeast floods every year, with droughts in other parts of India. India should build large water reservoirs to prevent flooding in the northeast, with canals to transport water to areas with drought; and use the flow of the water to generate hydropower. The government can invest the money from this power generation back into development programs for these states.

if I may suggest, this thread would be better served if successful projects undertaken to bring up the water levels are also posted. In other words problem statement & available practical solutions should ideally be given equal weightage.

There are plenty of such examples over past 3 decades in the country.

@HariPrasad-1 i was waiting for an opportunity to validate ISRO data, if you have any personal knowledge on a particular area where ground water level has visibly deteriorated, do let me know.

similarly the reverse scenario where water level have been restored.

We can check both scenarios on ISRO websites.
