a study on BBC first three months covrage of Israel and Palastine

The British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) is the largest broadcasting organization in the world. It is funded principally by an annual television license fee charged to all United Kingdom households, companies and organizations using equipment capable of receiving television broadcasts. Based on its influence and dependency on public funding, one would expect extremely high standards in terms of objectivity from the BBC. However, our in-depth analysis of articles published on the BBC website during the first quarter of 2010 shows that the BBC's coverage is filled with an anti-Israel bias that is reflected in both the style and substance of its daily reporting on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. This research demonstrates:

"¢ Daily coverage tends to focus on Israeli actions deemed as undermining the peace process while Palestinian actions violating peace agreements are either ignored or downplayed. The issue of Israeli housing construction in Jerusalem gets wide coverage by the BBC while constant and ongoing Palestinian glorification of terror, a major breach of every agreement, is almost ignored.

"¢ Articles often lead with the Palestinian perspective or bring in partisan, agenda-driven Israeli organizations that take a position critical of the Israeli government for "balance," representing a small number of Israelis.

"¢ Complex historical issues are often presented without proper context. To say that Jerusalem was occupied by Israel in 1967 without referencing the 3,000 year Jewish history of the city misleads more than it informs.

"¢ Inaccurate terms are often used for fear of passing judgment on the people and events being described. The BBC refers to Hamas terrorists as "militants" or "fighters." Ironically, that is in itself a judgment. Another example is that the term "right wing" is used frequently when referring to the Israeli governing coalition of Benjamin Netanyahu. By using this term (which we have never seen applied by the BBC to even the most extreme Palestinian political parties,) isn't the BBC passing its own judgment?

Especially considering the fact that "right wing" is usually used as a pejorative rather than simply descriptive label, it has no place in objective journalism.

This report is part of our continuing series that examines the daily coverage of influential media organizations. A single story that is based on a gross distortion of an event may be easier to identify as biased. Yet it is the soft but no less corrosive bias that pervades day to day coverage that has a greater impact on the way Israel is perceived by the general public.

Hi AV ! you touched upon a nice subject...i do feel the same about BBC reporting . There was not much news about IPL coverage when the matches were in full swing. once the MODI-BCCI spat became a full blown affair BBC sprang up and immediately did a coverage on the so called IPL scam...BBC gives prompt coverage to negative happenings in India and turns a comfortable blind eye to the positive developments, though they occasionally make some documentaries on India, which will have at least one slum shot!!!! If i am permitted to say ,they always project pakistan positively when compared to India.

BBC has been biased against India for atleast the last 2 decades, they will even twist positive stories to get their negative view across.

I'm not surprised at all at BBC bias or for that matter any other UK or Aussie news papers' bias towards India. The thing is most British newspapers are Victorian legacy and they still has that feeling of India being their colony. For that matter when India sent chandrayan -1 successfully most of the British/Aussie newspapers were agog with the news that India has 700 million below poverty line people etc etc and Indian govt. is wasting money on space program. The thing is all the Indian achievements make British news papers jealous that a country which was 60 years back was their colony is now successfully moving ahead of them in almost all the fields hence you find mostly negative news in them. BTW British economy is broke now and India is gonna leave behind Britain too in economy.you can feel the heartburn of the British people on this too when you read their comments on any India related story. And this negative attitude of theirs in not only India specific but also against china and any developing country like Zimbabwe.

Well Britain enjoy more power on world stage be it UNO/IMF/world bank just by piggybacking on USA irrespective of its own contributions.the time has come for Britain to give up its veto powers to other rising countries.

Wasn't it the Churchill who said that independent India wont survive as union for more then 10 years at that time he was batting for Pakistan coz he thought Pakistan being homogeneous(in his views though) has more chances of survival than India which is very diverse.60 years hence Churchill would be turning in his grave the same way the British newspapers feel heartburn at India's success.=heheh

Well they refer all terrorists as militant unless so called their militant attack UK-land or London then militant word becomes terrorist.

The Article basically talks about the Israeli offensive in Gaza. No need to badmouth Great Britian for the doings of a News Channel.

Very right. Even 26/11 terrorists were militants for BBC.
