Army wants Light Specialist Vehicle



After scouting the Indian and foreign markets for the last few years, the Army has announced afresh its interest in procuring an undisclosed number of a common Light Specialist Vehicle (LSV) for all arms in a 3,500-kg unladen weight class category with a payload capacity of 900-1200 kg. The Army had originally expressed its interest in such vehicles back in August 2010. The Army has stipulated in its information request that the LSV needs to be capable of performing reconnaissance and patrol roles for all arms, provide space and cross mobility in all terrains (including high altitude and deserts) to small parties/teams (approximately six) and operately independently in the battle field.

The Army has so far been given an opportunity to try out a series of LSVs both Indian and foreign-made. Indian contenders are likely to include the Mahindra Axe and Tata LSV, while the foreign offerings include the Defender series from Land Rover. Trials will be conducted across terrain in three different theatres since the selected vehicles are likely to be purchased in large numbers for use across arms. Variants of the LSVs with weapons fitment capabilities will also be incorporated once the tender is finalised this year.

The Army has been quite impressed with the Indian-made offerings that have been displayed at the last few Def Expo exhibitions. Sources say that the size of the order also means it would make eminent sense to purchase a vehicle developed and built in India to the Army's specifications.

I am bumping this thread.

Here is a review of Mahindra AXE.
Petrol : 4.2L GM Vortec 6cylinder (from Chevy blazer)
Power : 275bhp@6000rpm
used for SF only

Diesel : 2.7L Ssangyong ( powering Rextron)
Power : 172bhp@4000rpm
use for general military purpose.

Mahindra might have a better product, but Tata has taken a headstart in integrating multiple systems. They are already proposing a VSHORADS version mounted with Igla-S, and have used Tata SED's involvement with various Indian labs to provide specialty vehicles.

Tata LSV – QDMCT is a shelter based, self-contained vehicle mounted communication system that provides wide area IP network. It provides reliable and secured IP connectivity for data, voice & video,between various nodes. Multiple communication media have been provided for both data and voice connectivity.

The Tata QDMCT is designed and developed in collaboration with RCI – DRDO. The system has found an ideal platform in the Tata LSV, which is a high payload, high mobility,low silhouette military platform designed for withstanding tough weather and terrain conditions. The vehicle is powered by a 155 bhp diesel engine that generates 320 Nm of torque and can hit 70 kph with a crew of two includng the driver.
And then there is some friendly competition to the Tata product from Land Rover defender.

^^ All of them pale in comparison to this bad boy. The pinnacle of British engineering and something that will last till the end of time.

Last checked all the contender failed in the high mobility multipurpose light vehicle test conducted by IA. Is Their a re tender issued?

It was kinda past issue, Power assisted steering was a luxury at that times, the narrow wheel base with ultra light engine and chassy and a high reliable engine (obviously petrol) get to its favour, roads were narrow and Gypsy was the most handy among other available option (including steering control for a UV).

Still till date you would hardly see a Gypsy in a garage for mechanical issue.

Do not know for military purpose. But Gypsy is the best thing I ever drove on Indian roads. Nothing to worry about once you are behind its wheel.

Gypsy ride quality is crap when driving on a half decent road.

It passed for general purpose and utility vehicle meant only for black top roads. Otherwise it is so short of power and strength. It can never be a weapon plateform, a load bearer or desrt / mountain vehicle. Third class third world Mahindra Commander fears better in comparision for militray purposes though absolutely uneconomical and unweildy first WW technology like "Gatoos".
