This is all so confusing

There are a number of competing vehicles and different programs. The original Light Specialist Vehicle order seems to be defunct, and what we now have is Light Strike Vehicle which has been won by Force Motors.

Now Force Motors is a good choice - but why are these different jeeps still running about?

Tata Merlin LSV
Kalyani LBPV
Ashok Leyland LSV
Mahindra ALSV
It's all so confusing, but IA is actively trialing them, or most of them. There seems to be different requirements, because the much lighter force motors vehicle spec isnt the same one as the LSVs from Mahindra, TATA, AL, Kalyanis, which all have a common very armoured crew capsule for all around production.

Nah, I still can’t believe that all the fuss was about this vehicle frame. Tata, Mahindra LSV we have seen so far are in line with RFI.

This looks more like Mahindra 550 replacement.

Since the vehicle showed in the picture is open top and clearly deviod of the above mentioned specs, i personally think that particular variant is for quick mobility in desert operations. MG ZS EV

Water?.................................
Ok, my bad. But that's a lot of water for a 4-man recon crew. That's a lot of extra weight. Unless they're going to shower on field... I know it's only a fanboy CG.

Actually that's the reason I shared this here, it looks exactly like what LSV should... India's light strike vehicles are going to operate primarily in the Thar desert, often cut off or behind enemy lines.
They'll have to carry atleast 2-3 weeks water rations.

Also, stealing fuel from enemy's powerlines being an option. In Indian subcontinent people commonly steal electricity from power-lines by a method called "hooking".

If it indeed is force Gurkha, IA screwed up this purchase...

They missed an opportunity to leap forward..
Why? Force Gurkha is a great cross country vehicle.

It's got all the bells and whistles, a G-Wagon derived engine, winches on both ends, differential locking axles etc.

The interiors aren't much to talk about but that's not really needed in case of LSV.

Disappointed because it just a plain civilian vehicle painted in camo.

This turned out to be just a Mahindra 550 or gypsy replacement.

I was hoping for standardisation of combat equipment like improvements in gun mounts, comm. sets, higher exhaust pipe to enable water wading, higher ground clearance, fatter tyres to travel easily in the desert sand etc..

Not really. This isn’t replacing all gypsys- that will be done by 4-5 different vehicles.

this is just to replace the Gypsy in LSV role with SFs and a few other units. In LSV role the machine needs to be deployable from air (underslung and internally) and be able to travel deep into enemy territory quickly.

the FM LSV seems like a fine replacement for the gypsy in this role as it is more powerful, more customised for operator requirements and will probably be more reliable too.

Doesn't the ground clearance look a bit low? Wheels seem small...

Also do these things have solid axle suspension or independent suspension?
