India appears to be more developed and orderly then it is now.

not sure about being more developed. But cities seem to be more clean and streets are nice and wide with everyone following rules and regulations and generally being orderly.

increase in population from 1940-70 didn't do us any favours...check the population chart and you'll be astonished at the jump in birthrate after independence.
