Declaring State Of Emergency- 1975

Beset by growing political disorder, Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, Nehru's daughter, declares emergency rule. Thousands are detained during India's flirtation with authoritarianism, but the experiment is short-lived: the Emergency is lifted in 1977 and subsequent elections sweep Gandhi and the Congress Party out of power.

Mrs. Gandhi with M.G. Ramachandran, Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu. In the post-emergency elections in 1977, only the Southern states returned Congress majorities.

Historic images of Hyderabad.

Hussain Sagar. Today, that view point would be where NTR Gardens is located. There's no NTR Marg (outer road which connects Basheerbagh/Saifabad to Somajiguda). The area next to Hussein Sagar used to be filled with Dhobhi ghats, while the area surrounding the lake (particularly the Tank Bund main road) was where the rich and famous of Hyderabad used to have bungalows. Believe it or not - this area used to be considered the outskirts of Hyderabad, and Secunderabad was a neighbouring city. The hills at a distance are Malkajgiri and Maula Ali.

Mills in Hyderabad. This is today's lower Tank Bund area. Some of those mills still exist in ruin. Once again, this area was considered outskirts. This and the older picture is circa the '50s, I guess.

Secunderabad cantonment area. Today, it's the grounds next to Parade grounds, south of CAW (college of air warfare):

Unfortunately there's no datestamp, but it's ballpark 1940s-1950's.

Road leading to Charminar, it was filled with bazars. Back then Muslims and Hindus lived here in nearly equal proportions. Later with the expansion of the city, Hindus kind of spread out. Now this area is predominantly Muslim. Though that doesn't affect the social fabric in any way.

Even back then, city circles used to have fountains.

This vaguely looks like Malakpet Race Course. Hyderabad State was filled with polo grounds, race courses, etc. (colonial era)

Looks like the banks of the River Musi. Back then it was clean enough to use for irrigation. Today it's a sewer.
