It is the worst Chinese purchase of an A/c carrier ever. It came very, very cheap with a pot full of problems. Chinese had no experience to upgrade it hence began doing it anyway. Hence they decided to use it for local intimidation. They also used it to copy technology which was their worst decision. All the defects were transferred into the newer design. Hence instead of being a power on high seas, these have become coastal defence large vessel. These vessels rarely go beyond 200 miles of the Chinese coast, hence travelling to Indian Ocean via Straits of Malacca is an uphill task.

Now the Chinese wish that they had not purchased the defunct Russian A/C, worst they should not have copied it at all. This issue cannot be rectified easily. Moreover inexperienced Chinese crew make it an easy target to sink, hence it will not beyond South China Sea.

I could agree many things , the carrier is fine , but the issue is China doesn't have access to modern Ship engines, West EU and Ukrainians not selling them too, so they rely on shity Russian engines

so yes its a coastal defense Aircraft carrier

It means China will have to continue building a lot of aircraft carriers, LHDs, LPDs, cruisers, destroyers, SSNs, SSKs and frigates for a long, long time! This actually makes many of us very happy

It also means there is a long while before PLAN can think of sending out regularly Carrier Battlegroups to the Indian Ocean.

??? It is a STOBAR carrier a generation later and 20000 tons heavier than the one India bought from Russia.

So if it doesn't work then why did India bought an older smaller Kiev class with the same concept?

Liaoning is 20K tons bigger than the Vikramaditya, has blast shields which allows faster and safer launches, has large edge elevators unlike the small elevators set in the middle of the runway of the Vikramaditya which allows faster movement from hangar to deck and it also has its island on the edge unlike the Vikramaditya's which makes Liaoning's deck operations faster and safer.

Everything about the Liaoning is bigger, better and newer than the Vikramaditya because the Russians designed the Varyag on lessons learned from the older Kiev class.

Oh yes, the Liaoning was certified as combat ready in 2018

How do u maintain such a carrier for operations
We here similarly operate Russian carrier modified to our requirements
Differences btw 2 carriers is minimal not much Difference
But just look how intensively you are using it with any problems but here our vikky is in dock for 2 years undergoing maintenance and overhaul
We on other hand have much better and longer experience of operating carriers but facing huge issues but u are new here comparatively but excelling in its operation
But how do u maintain it

I have relatives on Taiwan who are DPP but most are KMT. Many Taiwanese overseas are pro-China or status quo. No war for over 50 years as the two economies grew together.

I'm not CCP because I think China would be even wealthier without it but change must gradual not abrupt. Otherwise, keeping CCP is better since they have allowed greater growth for China in the last 50 years than practically anyone else.

Coup in China rumors are from the same group of people who said Biden is a CCP plant. lol

Deny Chinese all that export cash. Shift manufacturing to elsewhere. That US and Europe can do it with ease. Rest of Asia is waiting for export oriented manufacturing and would do a better job in products. The quality will be better and will not breakdown sooner than later.

It may take five years but it should be done now otherwise Chinese will continue to challenge US influence in Indo-Pacific. Once less cash at Chinese disposal then they will simmer down and let Taiwan and others live in peace.

With exports moved to elsewhere then other countries will also prosper.

China rebuilt the Varyag from a hulk and it used Chinese parts and expertise. Every movable or exchangeable part became Chinese. So everything needed to maintain the Liaoning comes from within China.

China bought and studied two of the Kiev classes -- Minsk and Kiev -- sisters of the Vikramaditya. She also bought and studied the Australian/British carrier Melbourne. Also China studied with Brazil and its carrier which used to be the French Foch. Those studies resulted in China's carrier eco-system.

The Liaoning and Shandong have many subsystems that are Western or Chinese in design and usage not seen on the Russian carrier.

This is the same for the J-15. The plans originally came from the SU-33 prototype bought from Ukraine but the manufacture of the J-15 is all Chinese. That is how China is able to filled two 65K ton carriers full of fighters for it constant cruises and sorties.

China studied the MiG-29K and SU-33 because Western carrier aircraft were off limits. China wanted the SU-33 but Russia didn't to restart the line so China went to Ukraine for the T10 prototype. China had the lines already for the J-11 at Shenyang.

From what I read, the biggest issues with Russian equipment comes from waiting for parts and sytems from Russia.
