The Varyag was never "used". It was never completed... What China bought from Ukraine was an empty, "rusty" hull with its weapons and sensor systems removed. It didnt even have engines when it was towed to Dailan for refurbishing.

just did a quick research and found out the carrier was initially launch in 1988, so it's already about 26 years old?

Its just their training carries........putting it simply, when a person is learning to drive, he usually learns it in a second hand car. If you think that is old, then you must a take a look at this........... INS Viraat:laugh: proudly serving IN:india:

royal navy decommissioned those carriers in 1965, 1972, 1981 and the last one in 1984 which was bought by india. :D

is it even possible for this carrier to sail a few miles away from the dock?

Well it has gone through a lot of refits, so it might be the longest serving carrier irrespective of the navy it served when it retires in 2017. The harriers will be missed:((

Our old INS Viraat justifies the old saying "OLD IS GOLD".... Surely we are gonna miss it in action....
Its been part of many wars .... and helped us to be the only nation operating a A/C in the subcontinent for quite a very long time .....

It helped us win 1971 war.... It provided us superiority over enemies...

Once gone it will be missed but old must make way for young....

Whatever you how you account.

At least J-15s are on board now and Queen Elizabeth is still waiting for her US F-35B.

[MOD Edit: Profanity removed.]

being said that, only 16x J15 (much inferior aircraft in many aspects) have been built, whereas there are 150x F35 (superior 5th generation stealth aircraft) have been produced.

F35 5th gen aircraft on 100% newly and locally built 72,000 tons carrier with the most advanced radar and cutting edge technology. (no commies technology involved or imported).

so it is a 100% used and old carrier, but not a 100% newly built.
USS Missouri was built in the time during WW II. However, it was modernized and could serve for a long time. The carrier is not important, important stuffing.

Is it true that Chinese have a "carrier group killer missile"?

Liaoning is like an estranged brother to Vikramaditya, highly similar designs, but just the Liaoning is larger. Is it fully operational or still in training mode?

The PLAN has been using her to qualify and train J15 pilots at sea since she was commissioned. On her last batch of at sea operations, six pilots where qualified for carrier operations... They're still using her for tactics and operational procedure development as well whenever she's at sea. But when the PLAN is reasonably adept at carrier operations Liaoning will most probably be deployed operationally as part of a carrier task force. Her weapons and sensor suite, as well as the resources used in her restoration and manning, make it completely irrational to operate her exclusively as a training platform. Not to mention that her operational value, in terms of the large flight deck and hanger space she offers to a variety of air wing configurations will enhance PLAN war fighting capability at sea considerably.

in 2014, CV-16 Liaoning accepted a 4 months long Maintainance/Modification job in her refit shipyard. the modification which costs hundred millions of dollars is based on the experience gained in the past two years usage...she left the shipyard in the late August...

---------------
then the further training/ test mission went on...for the first time , CV-16 welcomed her first J15 carrier-borne fighter combat regiment..unlike the 55X serial J15 Prototype fleet with yellow painting coat, the Serial Production batch of J15 are painted with serial number- 1XX on the standard combat blue-Gray painting... source : Navy Newspaper
